Ceramics at ART BASEL

La presenza della ceramica nel mondo dell'arte, quella con la A maiuscola, sta timidamente crescendo. Eventi come quello di Basilea, avanguardia contemporanea, ha ospitato nella sua versione invernale a Miami alcuni artisti interessanti.
La Galleria Tomio Koyama di Tokio, che rappresenta moltissimi artisti importanti dalle diverse espressioni, ha portato a Miaimi le opere della giovane Kumie Tsuda. Questa artista crea con la ceramica installazioni formate da tanti piccoli elementi che ricreano un'atmosfera surreale. Belle ed insolite le sue creazioni, sul sito della galleria trovere più informazioni ed una bella intervista.
Cambiando continente, ci spostiamo in Brasile dove la galleria di Laura Marsiaj ci propone un artista che lavora riassemblando pezzi di porcellana molto kitsch. Barrão incolla insieme frammenti di oggetti di uso comune sovvertendo la loro funzione e ridicolizzando la loro esistenza.
Questi nuovi assemblaggi ci propongono una realtà mostruosa fatta di cani con teste multiple e manici di tazzine. I prezzi esorbitanti sono ben lontani da quelli che conosciamo nel mondo della ceramica e la tecnica dell'assemblaggio la trovo ormai troppo inflazionata. Questo il sito della Galeria Laura Marsiaj.

Ceramics is slowly entering the temples of contemporary Art ( with a capital A). Art Basel presented last week in its glitzier version in Miami, had some (too few!) ceramic pieces. Tokyo Gallery Tomio Koyama represent the young artist Kumie Tsuda. Her work made of little objects/figures filled the space with a dreamlike air. I like her work, and on the site of the gallery you can find more images and a charming interview. From the other side of the world Galeria Laura Marsiaj, exhibits the work of brazilian artist Barrão. With the help of epoxy glue he re-assembled bits and pieces of super kitsch porcelain. The result is a monstrous object like a multi headed dog with spouts and handles. The prizes are crazy, something that usually doesn't apply for ceramics. Even though I recognize the irony and the critique hidden behind the german shepards, I am not entirely convinced by this over exploited technique of gluing together pieces of old figurines.

"La prima biennale di ceramica contemporanea, è un tentativo di mappare la pratica artistica contemporanea, non solo in Indonesia, ma anche nel sud Est Asiatico e nel mondo. In questo primo evento importanti figure del mondo dell'arte si occuperanno della selezione, rispettivamente Asmujo J. Irianto e Rifky Effendy. Dall'indonesia parteciperanno F. Widayanto, Nurdian Ichsan, Nia Gautama, Lie Fhung, Albert Yonathan Mirjam Veldhuis dall'Olanda e Jason Lim da Singapore; e altri dalla Thailandia, Malesia e Filippine.
I lavori presenteranno diversi valori e tecniche artistiche, basati sul vasellame, sulla scultura e sul concetto, inclusi artisti provenienti dalla scultura come
Wiyoga Muhardanto e Handiwirman Saputra."

Jakarta Contemporary Ceramic Biennale #1 held in North Art Space (NAS), Pasar Seni Ancol, is an attempt to map the practice of contemporary art, not only in Indonesia but also in South-east Asia countries and worldwide. In its first event—the initiation—there are prominent figures in art world, teaming up as a curator team that would do the selection namely Asmujo J. Irianto and Rifky Effendy. They both sort out the talented ceramic artists. From Indonesia, the artists who participate in the event are F. Widayanto, Nurdian Ichsan, Nia Gautama, Lie Fhung, Albert Yonathan, and many more; Mirjam Veldhuis from the Netherlands and Jason Lim from Singapore; also the ones from Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines. The artworks are showing various techniques and artistic values, based on pottery, sculpture, and concepts, including artists with the background of sculpting such as Wiyoga Muhardanto and Handiwirman Saputra.

Sabato 12 Dicembre l'artista presenterà a Feanza, da Muky alla Loggietta del Trentanove, uno slideshow Faenza.Cina sull'esperienza creativa con artisti internazionali presso la città di Foshan in Cina.

AC: Leggerezza, fragilità, immaterialità, luce, ombra

CV: Che aspetto della tua personalità ti è più utile nel tuo lavoro?

AC: La femminilità

CV: Qual'e il tuo pezzo in ceramica preferito?

AC: Le ultime installazioni con le fibre ottiche e i leds intitolate "trame di luce", la luce finalmente avvolge e sostiene le porcellane, rendendole vibranti e leggere

CV: Da cosa trai ispirazione?

AC: Una rilettura del passato per me è sempre un punto di partenza, fare un giro ogni tanto al bel Museo che abbiamo a Faenza, significa trarre tanta ispirazione. Sono sempre stata attratta dalle crespine del '600, che ho appunto rieditato nel 2005, poi traggo ispirazione dal mondo della moda del design.

CV: Se potessi scegliere dove vivere/lavorare nel mondo, dove andresti?

AC: Non saprei, ci sono talmente tanti posti belli nel mondo!!! sono molto attratta dall'oriente, ma non mi dispiacerebbe per qualche breve periodo neppure Parigi o Londra.

On the 12 of December she will be presenting at Muky in Faenza, Faenza.Cina, a slideshow about a collaboration among international artists, that took place in Falong, China.

CV: Five words that describe your work

AC: Lightness, fragility, immateriality, light, shadow

CV: What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practice?

AC: Femininity

CV: What is your favourite ceramic piece ever?

AC: My latest creations with optic fibres and led lights, titled 'Weft of Light', the light surrounds and sustains the porcelains making them vibrant and light.

CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?

AC: A new interpretation of the past is my starting point, paying a visit to the beautiful Museum we have in Faenza is an endless source. I've always been inspired by 17th century crespine (A headdress worn by women, usually made of or knitted mesh), that I re-create in 2005, and also by the world of fashion and design.

CV: If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?

AC: I don't know, there are so many beautiful places in the world!! I'm very attracted by the far east, but a wouldn't mind some short stay in either London or Paris.
