AG: Il saper osservare.

CV: Qual'è il tuo pezzo in ceramica preferito?

AG: Il primo pezzo che ho creato, avevo 15 anni. E' una semplice mattonella con un pesce in rilievo ma la considero il simbolo della strada che ho scelto di percorrere.
 

CV: Da cosa trai ispirazione?
AN: La mia ispirazione viene principalmente dalle forme della natura ma anche dall'osservazione degli ambienti urbani e degli oggetti che mi circondano e dalla loro trasformazione nel tempo.

 

CV: Se potessi scegliere dove vivere/lavorare nel mondo, dove andresti?
AN: Ho scelto di vivere a Sulmona, una cittadina circondata dal Parco Nazionale della Majella, un posto incantevole, fonte inesauribile di ispirazione! Mi piace però poter essere libera di viaggiare e lavorare in diversi posti.
Per questo quando posso partecipo ai progetti "Artist in Residency" attivi in diversi centri internazionali.
Sono già stata in Danimarca, al Guldagergaard, International Ceramic Research Center e sarò a New Taipei City al Yingge Ceramic Art Museum a febbraio 2014.
Spero negli anni a venire di avere la possibilità di continuare a viaggiare e conoscere altri paesi e culture; credo questo sia il miglior modo per continuare a crescere in questo lavoro.

CV: Il tuo migliore e peggiore momento ceramico?

AG: Il migliore è quando, dopo aver passato settimane a sperimentare qualche nuova tecnica, finalmente ottengo un pezzo proprio come me lo ero immaginato.
Il peggiore è ogni volta che non ottengo quel risultato sperato; oppure quando accendo il forno e a metà cottura mi rendo conto di aver lasciato fuori il pezzo più importante!

AG: The ability to observe

CV: What is your favourite ceramic piece of all times ?
AG: The first piece that I created when I was 15 yrs old. It is a simple tile with a fish relief, but I regard it as a symbol of the road I chose to travel

CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?
AG: My inspiration comes mostly from the shapes of nature but as also from urban landscape and objects that surround me and their transformation in time

CV: If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?
AN: I chose to live in Sulmona, a village surrounded by the Majella National Park, an enchanting place, an endless source of inspiration! I like to be free to travel and work in different places.
For that reason whenever I can I apply to residencies in different international centres.
I've been in Denmark at Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center and I am going to New Taipei City at Yingge Ceramic Art Museum in february 2014.
I hope in the future to still have the possibility to continue travelling and to know new places and cultures, I believe this is the best way to continue growing in this job
CV: Your best and worst ceramic moment
AG: The best is when after weeks of experimenting new techninques I finally obtain what I had imagined. The worst, every time I do not obtain that wished result, or when I turn on the kiln and half way through I realise that I left out the most important piece.!

CV: Five words that describe your work
GP: Four is enough...Useless but essentials, ironical but melancholic

CV: What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practice?
GP: The complete absence of references. I haven't studied art and I am free of academic knowledges and techniques. If I then add being inattentive and calm, this is an indispensable mixture for my creations.

CV: What is your favourite ceramic piece of all times ?
GP: I have a very diversified production ( objects, decals, low reliefs ) and it's difficult to choose a favourite. From the objects series I love the skateboard and from the reliefs "you have s.t. in your nose"

CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?
GP: From the everyday life and from my dog Lucky that has just open a studio on a very shining star

CV: If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?
GP: While many leave to follow their dreams I did the opposite. After years of travelling and with my suitcases full of dreams I came back home, to Grottaglie, a little town in Puglia. My bet was to survive here, working with ceramics, like my father did for decades and many "grottagliesi" (i.e. people from Grottaglie) did for centuries. I am succeeding: I work in Grottaglie, with ceramics, doing my own thing. It's fantastic


CV: Your best and worst ceramic moment
GP: Every time I open the kiln is a unique moment. Inside there is the result of days, weeks of working and waiting. In a square meter anything can happen. There I live my best and worst moments, not when I am confronted with the public, in competitions, or galleries.

GP: Ne bastano 4: Inutili ma indispensabili, ironiche ma melanconiche.

CV: Che aspetto della personalità ti è più utile nel lavoro?
GP: L’assoluta mancanza di punti di riferimento. Non avendo studiato arte sono privo di accademismi e tecnica. Se a questo ci aggiungo l’essere distratto e calmo, ne esce un mix indispensabile per la mia produzione.

CV: Qual'e il tuo pezzo in ceramica preferito?
GP: Ho una produzione troppo diversificata (oggetti, decalcomanie, bassorilievi) per decretare il mio favorito. Degli oggetti adoro lo skate mentre dei bassorilievi amo “Hai qualcosa nel naso”.

CV: Da cosa trai ispirazione?
GP: Dalla quotidianità e dal mio cane Lucky, che ha aperto da poco uno studio su una luminosissima stella.

CV: Se potessi scegliere dove vivere/lavorare nel mondo, dove andresti?
GP: Mentre molti partono per inseguire i propri sogni io ho fatto il contrario. Dopo anni in viaggio e con le valigie pieni di sogni sono tornato a casa, a Grottaglie, piccolo paese della Puglia. La mia scommessa era sopravvivere qui, lavorando con la ceramica, come ha fatto mio padre per decenni e come fanno tantissimi grottagliesi da secoli. Ci sto riuscendo: lavoro a Grottaglie, con la ceramica, a modo mio. E’ fantastico.

CV: Il tuo migliore e peggiore momento ceramico
 GP: Ogni volta che si apre il forno è un momento unico. All’interno c’è il risultato di giorni, settimane di lavoro e attesa. All’interno di un metro quadrato può succedere di tutto. E’ lì che vivo i momenti migliori e peggiori, non durante il confronto con il pubblico, nei concorsi, nelle gallerie.

Paolo Polloniato. Nato nel 1979 a Nove (VI). Proviene da una storica famiglia di Maestri Artigiani legati da due secoli alla produzione della ceramica di Nove, uno dei centri più importanti in Italia. Tra il 2001 e il 2007, frequenta il corso di Decorazione sez. B con il professore Gaetano Mainenti, presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia .Nel 2002 è co-fondatore del gruppo Made in Nove.
Dal 2008 la ceramica contemporanea rappresenta il suo settore di ricerca fondamentale, sviluppata attraverso l’indagine e la manipolazione di stampi delle varie manifatture storiche del suo luogo di origine, al fine di creare sculture e installazioni in cui una storia si rapporta con il presente, generando nuovi scenari. Nel maggio 2012 è stato invitato a Vallauris per tenere un work shop e una residenza d’artista in cui ha prodotto utilizzando degli stampi storici di questo centro di produzione ceramica francese.

PP:La metamorfosi della tradizione. Una raffigurazione classica del neo
realismo . Ironia e sarcasmo. Sensi e doppi sensi. Le mie opere sono il
proseguito evolutivo di una lunga Storia.

CV: Che aspetto della tua personalità ti è più utile nel tuo lavoro?
PP: La sensibilità e l’attenzione verso la realtà che mi circonda. Uso tutti i sensi
al fine di percepire il tempo in cui mi trovo, per poi dare forma al mio punto
di vista.

CV: Qual'e il tuo pezzo in ceramica preferito?
PP: “Vasca con putto , modello ‘800 Manifattura Barettoni, già Antonibon”.
2008. Rappresenta la presa di coscienza di come volevo usare la
ceramica.
La mia evoluzione artistica é molto diversa, ho spaziato attraverso diversi
materiale e tecniche, a seconda del fine concettuale che mi pongo . La
ceramica é la più recente, iniziata nel 2008. Rappesenta , probabilemente,
un destino di origini famigliari e del fatto che sono nato a Nove, dove si fa
ceramica da quattro secoli.

CV: Da cosa trai ispirazione?
PP: Dalla realtà in cui mi trovo. Dalla società contemporanea basata tra miti
e illusioni, tra azioni e reazioni. Dal osservazione del comportamento
dell’uomo nel quotidiano. Da cio’ che i media ci dicono e sopratutto come lo
dicono. Dalla maniera di reagire o meno di tanti rispetto le scelte di pochi.
Adoro il metodo dadaista usato da “Blob” di ri-rappresentare la realtà ,
nello spazio televisivo .

CV: Se potessi scegliere dove vivere/lavorare nel mondo, dove andresti?
PP: Io ora vivo e lavoro tra Bruxelles e Nove. Non sento l’esigenza di scegliere
un luogo fisso. Piuttosto mi trovo meglio nella condizione di potermi
spostare tra vari luoghi e tradizioni, per creare. Nella mia esperienza,
diversificare i luoghi , mi ha permesso di evolvermi molto , perché ogni
situazione mi genera un’ispirazione diversa .

CV: Il tuo migliore e peggiore momento ceramico
PP: Migliore quando ho capito cosa volevo dalla ceramica, peggiore quando
non riesco a realizzare, per limiti economici, le opere future che appaiono
nella mia testa.

Paolo Polloniato born in 1979 in Nove (Vicenza)comes from a family of Master Artisans involved for the past two hundred years in the production of Nove's ceramics, one of the graetest centre in Italy. He is the co-founder of Made in Nove.
From 2008 he works almost exclusivly with ceramics, re-working original moulds from historical ceramic houses of Nove and creating new sculptures connected with the present. In May 2012 was selected for an artist's residence in Vallauris.

CV: Five words that describe your work
PP: The metamorphosis of tradition. A classical refiguration of neo-realism. Irony and sarcasm.  Meanings and double senses. My pieces are the evolution of a long History.

CV: What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practice?

PP: Sensitivity and alertness towards the reality around me. I make use of all my senses to understand the time in which I'm in, and to give form to my point of view. 

CV: What is your favourite ceramic piece of all times ?

“Vasca con putto , modello ‘800 Manifattura Barettoni, già Antonibon”.
2008. Represents the understanding of I wanted to work with ceramics.
My artistic evolution has been very diverse, I experienced different materials and techniques, depending on the conceptual goal I aim for.

Ceramics is the most recent material, I started in 2008. It comes, probably, from my familiar destiny and from the fact that I was born in Nove, great ceramic centre for the past 4 centuries

CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?

PP: From the reality around me. From contemporary society based on myths and illusions, between actions and reactions. From observing the behaviour of the human-being in its day to day. From what the medias say and how they say it. From the reaction of many in respect to the choices of few. I love the dadaist method used by Blob (i.e. an italian tv program) to re-represent reality on tv.

  CV: If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?

PP: I live and work between Bruxelles and Nove. I don't feel the need to chose a specific place. I rather enjoy moving to various places and tradition, helps my creativity. In my experience, changing places gave me the chance to evolve, because every situation generates a diverse inspiration.

CV: Your best and worst ceramic moment
PP: Best when I realise what I wanted from ceramics, worst when I don't succeed, for economical reasons, to create the works that I have in my head.

CG: Daily, white, stratification, repetition, broken 

CV: What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practice?

CG: A mixture of optimism, passion, stubbornness and not being realistic

CV: What is your favourite ceramic piece of all times ?

CG: Lately I discovered the work of Finnish artist Pekka Paikkari, I was deeply taken by his huge crackled sculptures 

CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?
CG: from everyday objects, from the shapes of nature, from Miyazaki's animation and from Monica Valenciano's dance.

CV:  If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go? 
CG: New York. But really I would like to have a long enough life to live also in Kyoto, Berlin, London, Buenos Aires and Oaxaca

CV: Your best and worst ceramic moment

CG: One of the best was when by mistake I forgot to put an ingredient in the glaze, and when when I opened the kiln I found the finishing I've been looking for ages.

The worst of of the last couple of years was when, after hours and hours of working on a big sculpture, I relax on the sofa to contemplate the almost finished work, and I didn't even have the time to react I watched the whole sculpture bending on itself and crashing on the floor.

CG: Dagli oggetti del quotidiano, dalle forme della natura, dai cartoni animati di Miyazaki e dalla danza di Monica Valenciano

CG: A New York. Ma la verità è che vorrei avere una vita così lunga da poter vivere anche a Kyoto, Berlino, Londra, Buenos Aires e Oaxaca.

CV: Il tuo migliore e peggiore momento ceramico

CG: Uno dei momenti migliori è stato quando mi son accidentalmente dimenticata di mettere un ingrediente nello smalto e, all’aprire il forno, mi son ritrovata di fronte alla finitura che cercavo da anni.
Il peggiore momento degli ultimi anni è invece stato quando, dopo ore ed ore di lavoro ad una grossa scultura, mi son buttata sul divano del laboratorio per riposarmi e contemplare il lavoro quasi terminato quando, senza neanche avere il tempo di reagire, ho visto l’intera scultura piegarsi su se stessa e schiantarsi al suolo.

CW: I love my work and there are a lot of " best ceramic moments ". To touch a fresh burnished ,unfired surface, the scent of smoke on my skin after firing and smoking. There are no worst moments. If I break a piece I know that I can make it new and better.

NO'D: Difficile sceglierne uno ! L'Armata di terracotta o "Trophy" un'installazione di Claire Twomeys per il V&A a Londra o l'installazione "Field" di Anthony Gormleys o ...

CV: Da cosa trai ispirazione?
NO'D: L'ispirazione mi viene dalla vite e dalle sue strade e risvolti inaspettati, spero di riuscire a riportare queste senzazioni nelle mie forme. Visivamente mi ispiro alle forme della natura, la geometria e i modelli che si trovano in esse.

CV: Se potessi scegliere dove vivere/lavorare nel mondo, dove andresti?
NO'D: Se dovessi muovermi da Cork in Irlanda dove vivo al momento, mi piacerebbe vivere in Italia

NO'D: My inspiration comes from life and its' unexpected paths and outcomes, I hope to reflect this in my forms. Visually I take my inspiration from natural forms, the geometry and patterns found in them.

NO'D: If I had to move from Cork in Ireland where I live at the moment I would love to live in Italy.

VS: Internet-Google Search! Comunque le idee migliori mi vengono mentre sto lavorando in laboratorio. Google è il mezzo per ampliare le mie idee e cercare ispirazione
CV: Se potessi scegliere dove vivere/lavorare nel mondo, dove andresti?
VS: Al momento Jingdezhen in Cina è in cima alla mia lista, ero lì lo scorso anno e voglio tornarci il prima possibile. Sarebbe bello vivere a Melbourne o Chaingmai (in Tailandia) e avere un laboratorio a Jingdezhen.

VS: I love antique ceramic (see picture attached) and they are hard to find.

CV: Where do you get your inspiration from? VS: the Internet - Google search! However, most of the best idea come while i work in studio. Google is the tool to expand my idea and source for more inspiration.

CV: If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go? VS:At the moment Jingdezhen, China is the top of my list. I was there late last year and want to go back again as soon as I can.
It would be great to live in Melbourne or Chaingmai (Thailand) and have a studio in Jingdezhen.

AVH: 30 anni fa quando ho cominciato a lavorare la ceramica, rimasi molto impressionata dai lavori di Bodil Manz e le ciotole di Alev Siesbye. Tra i miei connazionali ammiravo Tjok Dessauvage and Piet Stockmans. Mi piace ancora il loro lavoro, ma da allora ho visto così tanti pezzi belli che mi è impossibile scegliere

CV: Da cosa trai ispirazione?
AVH: Principalmente l'ispirazione viene mentre sto lavorando in studio. Recentemente in un laboratorio svizzero ho notato una frase di Pierre Soulages "c'est ce que je fais qui m'apprend ce que je cherche" " E' quello che faccio che mi insegna quello che sto cercando" questo rappresenta perfettamente quello che succede a me. Comunque devo ammettere che ho cominciato a piegare le sottili lastre di creta dopo un viaggio in Giappone dove ho scoperto l' origami.
CV: Se potessi scegliere dove vivere/lavorare nel mondo, dove andresti?
AVH: Mi piacerebbe lavorare in Oriente, ma solo per un po'. Ho vissuto e lavorato nel sud della Francia e l'esperienza è stata molto forte, preferisco vivere nella mia città Mechelen in Belgio, dove sono nata, cresciuta e dove sono circondata dalla mia famiglia e dagli amici.

CV: What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practice?
AVH: Patience and perseverence

CV: What is your favourite ceramic piece of all times ?
AVH: 30 years ago when I started practicing ceramics, I was very impressed by the work of Bodil Manz and the bowls from Alev Siesbye. In my own country I admired Tjok Dessauvage and Piet Stockmans. I still love their work, but I have seen so many beautiful pieces since that time that is impossible to choose.

CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?
AVH:Mostly my inspiration comes while I am working in my studio. In a Swiss workshop I recently saw a phrase from Pierre Soulages: c'est ce que je fais qui m'apprend ce que je cherche . What I am doing learns me what I am looking for and that illustrates perfectly how it works for me. However I must admit that I first started folding my thin sheets of clay after a trip to Japan where I discovered origami.

CV: If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?
AVH: I'd like to work in the East for a while… but only for a while . I have lived and worked in the South of France and the experience was very strong, I prefer to live in my home town Mechelen in Belgium, where I was born, where I grew up and where I am surrounded by family and friends. Della serie italiani all'estero, ecco Cristina Vezzini, una giovane ragazza che dopo l'università in inghilterra ha deciso di rimanere nella terra di Albione. Mi piacciono molto le sue sculture che sembrano strane formazioni naturali, l'uso degli smalti e l'abilità tecnica sono frutto delle sue esperienze universitarie e del lavoro di apprendista. Manuel Canu is an Italian ceramist with an international curriculum. Originally from Sardinia, Manuel studied ceramics design at Bath Spa University and later moved to Denmark. His time is divided between his strong passions : ceramics and graphic design and his work is influenced by his international experiences, like residencies in Jingdezhen and at Ceramic Centre in Guldagergaard.

Simon Zsolt Jozsef mi ha contattato attraverso Ceramic Vision, e ne sono molto contenta perchè altrimenti non avrei avuto la possibilità di vedere il suo lavoro così bello e poetico. Percui non siate timidi, questo è un luogo per le interazioni e per la conoscenza. Trovo la sua tecnica molto interessante, e i suoi lavori dotati di una particolarità sempre più rara in questo mondo omologato. Gli ho posto le famose domande e gli ho chiesto qualche informazione sulla sua tecnica. Vi lascio a lui..
La tecnica che uso è basata sul colaggio. Più precisamente su una continuazione della tecnica di colaggio tradizionale. Ho liberato questa tecnica dalle regole più restrittive usando gli errori come parte del processo. Le forme vengono costruite da "bave" di porcellana. I miei calchi in gesso sono formati da tanti piccoli pezzi formati e scavati a mano uno a uno. Dopo questo lungo processo posso unirli liberamente. Posso apportare numerose variazioni sulla forma aumentando o diminuendo la distanza tra gli stampi. Questa distanza decide la fuoriuscita del colaggio e la forma. Poi do forma alle sculture dall'interno e dall'esterno allo stesso tempo donandogli qualità tattili differenti: morbide e taglienti.

CV: Da cosa trai ispirazione?
SZJ: Gli oggetti senza vita mi fanno venire volgia di penderli in mano, cambiarli e riorganizzarli, come Morandi che dava qualità umane a semplici oggetti. La mia idea non era di dare qualità umane agli oggetti ma di spingermi ancora più in la e mostrare il movimento nascosto dietro forme congelate. Voglio dare agli oggetti un respiro di vita. Vorrei essere l'osservatore di sassi che creascono e di minerali che assomigliano a piante, percui li devo fare. Quale altro può essere lo scopo per un artista, se non quello di continuare la creazione. I miei oggetti sono in evoluzione. Sono congelati, minerali che crescono qualcosa vicino ai fiori. Forse non solo materiale ma anche pezzi pieni di vita.

CV: Se potessi scegliere dove vivere/lavorare nel mondo, dove andresti?
SZJ: Ho vissuto in Indonesia per un anno e questa esperienza mi ha fatto rendere conto di regalo sia vivere in Europa Centrale dove l'est incontra l'ovest. L'Est spirituale e l'Ovest materiale mi aiutano a cercare lo spirito di vita nel materiale, la missione del Mezzo. In Europa mi sento a casa, posso allungare e mie mani lavorando in altri luoghi ma poi devo riportare tutto al terriccio. Non sono cosmopolita. Sento un rapporto con la terra dove sono nato. Guardo intorno al mondo e raccolgo cose che mi danno il pepe per la mia vita EuropeaUngherese.

Simon Zsolt Jozsef has contacted me through Ceramic Vision, and I am very happy because otherwise I would not have had the chance to see his beautiful and poetic work. So do not be shy, this is a place for exchange and learning. I find his technique extremely interesting and his work has the wonderful quality of being different in a world that is somehow becoming homologous. I've ask him to answer the famous questions and to give us some information on his technique. I'll leave you to him...
The technique that I use is based on slip casting. More exactly continuation of the traditional slip casting method. I free this technique strict rules and I use the original mistakes as forming process. Shapes are built up by „porcelain burrs”. My plaster moulds are cut in many pieces than shaped and carved one by one. After this long process I can fit them together freely. I can make several variations of shapes by enlarging or reducing the distance between the mould pieces. This distance determines the escaping slips quantity and form. So I shape the sculptures inside and outside at the same time in two different qualities: smooth and sharp.

SZJ: Lightsome, sharp, smooth, growing, surprising.

CV: What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practice?
SZJ: Purposeful patience.

CV: What is your favourite ceramic piece of all times ?
SZJ: The carved (written) clay tablets of Mesopotamia from the past gave me the first catharsis related to ceramics. From the „present” the beauty of this Fukami Sueharu’s sculpture touched me.

CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?
SZJ: To see lifeless objects inspires me to lift them up, to change them and organize them. Like Morandi, who gave human qualities for simple objects. My plan was not give human qualities to objects but to step only a little further and show the motion behind the frozen shapes. I just would like to give a lifefull breath to objects. I’d like to be the observer of growing stones and “plantlike“ minerals, so I have to make some. What else could be the purpose of an artist than continuing the creation. My objects are in evolution. They are frozen, growing minerals a bit closer to the flowers. Perhaps not only materials but lifefull pieces as well.

CV: If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?
SZJ: I have already lived in Indonesia for a year and based on this experience I see it is a gift to live in Central Europe, where East and West meets. The vision of spiritual East and the material West helps me to look for the spirit living in the material, the mission of the Middle. In Europe I feel at home. I could reach so far with my hands and work in other places, but I have to bring everything back to the loam. I am not cosmopolitan. I feel relationship with the land I was born. I look around in the world and I pick up something, which gives me the spices for my European, Hungarian life.
