Faenza 's Prize 2013

58° Premio Faenza:
vincono la finlandese Paivi Rintaniemi
e il faentino Nero / Alessandro Neretti
 
Decretati i vincitori del Concorso Internazionale della Ceramica d’Arte Contemporanea – Premio Faenza alla sua 58esima edizione. Lo scorso 15 aprile la Giuria si è riunita e, tra circa un centinaio di finalisti provenienti da tutto il mondo, ha stabilito le sue preferenze. Le opere selezionate affrontano i linguaggi della contemporaneità e mostrano un’attenzione viva e partecipe ai temi dell’attualità.

Il Premio Faenza della sezione over 40 è stato assegnato all'artista finlandese, Paivi Ritaniemi, con l'opera Avis (2012) perchè “La purezza del lavoro intitolato Avis, esito felice di essenzialità e sofisticatezza, mette in evidenza la profondità e la maturità della ricerca dell’artista finlandese, la quale, ispirandosi alla forma primordiale del contenitore, ha raggiunto una sintesi quanto mai efficace tra fragilità e forza, tra forma e informe”.
The Faenza's prize for over 40's went to Finnish artist Paivi Ritaniemi for the work "Avis" reasons were "the purity of the work, successful combination of essentiality and sophistication, that highlights the profundity and the maturity of the artist's research. The artist inspired by the primordial shape of the container, had reached a very effective synthesis between fragility and strength, between the form and the non-form."

Il Premio Faenza della sezione under 40 è andato invece ad un faentino Nero / Alessandro Neretti con l'opera I nuovi Apostoli ovvero paesaggi ecnonomico-strutturali (2012) perchè “l’opera sviluppa il linguaggio della contemporaneità nella forma e nella poetica. L’abilità nel coniugare materiali disomogenei, unitamente alla capacità dell’artista di confrontarsi con i temi dell’attualità, offrono molteplici ed inedite chiavi di lettura di un’opera in cui diversi linguaggi e pratiche artistiche convivono felicemente e sottolineano la capacità dell’autore di esprimersi in tutta la sua maturità”.
Faenza's Prize for the under 40's went to italian Nero / Alessandro Neretti for the work I Nuovi Apostoli (New Apostles, i.e. the economical- structural landscape) " The work develops a contemporary language in its form and poetic. The ability to combine diverse materials toghether with the artist's ability to confront with current issues, offers numerous and new readings of a piece in which the diverse languages and artistic's practices co-habit happily and underline the capacity of the autor to express itself in full maturity "

Bertozzi & Casoni: Timeless

Bertozzi & Casoni combine socially critical and philosophical themes. Through their colour and material choices their sculptures verge on history. Bertozzi & Casoni developed a technique in the late nineties for creating large ceramic works. The colossal but fragile sculptures by the Italian artist duo are overpowering and prompt observers to contemplate life and death, nature and culture, art and craft.

The 2013 International Ceramics Festival, the UK’s leading festival of ceramics, will take place at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre over the weekend of Friday 28 – Sunday 20 June 2013.
Internationally renowned ceramicists and potters from all over the world will be travelling to the beautiful coastal surroundings of Aberystwyth to take part in a jam-packed weekend of special exhibitions, artist-led talks, practical demonstrations, lectures and films. The artists’ workspaces will also be open to the public and there will be the chance to buy work from the leading artists.
This year promises to be a stellar line up for the festival, with artists travelling from as far as USA, Korea, China, Spain, Poland and New Zealand. Participating artists demonstrating their work include American artist Beth Cavener Stichter, whose provocative and emotionally charged animal sculptures turn the traditional use of ceramics on its head; one of the world’s foremost porcelain ceramicists, Takeshi Yasuda, whose beautiful, wheel thrown pots are currently being exhibited at the Fitzwilliam Museum's exhibition: 'China’s White Gold: Contemporary porcelain from Jingdezhen', and Doug Fitch, one of the UK’s leading slipware potters.

2013 also marks new partnership between the International Ceramics Festival and the V&A.   Keiko Masumoto, who is the current Toshiba Japanese Ceramics Resident at the V&A in London, known for her delicate hand-building and intricate painting skills of the traditional Japanese style, will be visiting the festival and demonstrating her ceramic techniques, and also showing how she is using V&A collections to inform her skilled contemporary works.
Keiko Masumoto will be demonstrating the ceramic techniques used in her Motif series to create sculptural work inspired by the pattern and shapes of historical ceramics. Masumoto, who is known for her delicate hand-building and intricate painting skills of the traditional Japanese style, was born and grew up in Tatsuno City, Japan. She studied Ceramic Art at BA and MA level at Kyoto City University of Art where she became especially interested bringing together traditional Japanese ceramic craft practice with fine art concepts. She has exhibited in numerous exhibitions in Kyoto, Tokyo, Kobe and internationally in London and Seoul. Keiko exhibited at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art with a solo show developed for the Touch and Sense series, a hugely popular annual exhibition of sensual gallery experiences for blind and partially sighted people. Masumoto currently teaches ceramics at Kobe Design University, and has previously taught at the Ceramic Studio in Fumonsha, Kyoto.

Le geste spontané, au graphisme tantôt percutant tantôt innocent du céramiste
Laurent Dufour suscite l’émotion, l’interrogation, la remise en question…

Fasciné, on ne peut que se laisser porter par le graphisme narratif de ses cubes ou plonger dans la candeur des regards de ses personnages.
Très vite, trop vite on lâche prise,…la force physique qu’elle dégage et la virtuosité « récit-graphique» ouvrent une faille émotionnelle à laquelle on ne peut résister.

l’anima.

When in Rome...,Japanese Ceramists of the Premio Faenza
















I spent my Easter holidays in Rome and was pleasently surprised. There were at least three exhibitions I wanted to see.
The Istituto di Cultura Giapponese (Japanese Cultural Centre in Rome) hosted great pieces by japanese ceramicists from the Premio Faenza. It was a great chance to see many pieces that I knew from photographs and to admire the ones I already knew.
Isamu Miura (premiato nel 1970),Yasuo Hayashi (Premio Faenza 1972), Miwa Ryōsaku (Kyusetsu XII)(1977), Takako Araki (1979),Kensaku Uke (1979), Aki Matsui Toshio (Premio Faenza 1982), Sueharu Fukami (Premio Faenza 1985),Eiko Kishi (1999), Kazuhito Nagasawa (1999), Jun Nishida (Premio Faenza 2003), Nobuyuki Ogawa(2003 e 2005), Tomoko Kawakami (2005), Kenichi Harayama (2005), Akio Niisato (2005), Tomonari Kato(2007, Premio Faenza ex aequo 2009),Kazumasu Futamura (2009), Junko Shimomura (2009),Yoshinori Akazawa (2009), Shigeki Hayashi (Premio Faenza ex aequo 2011), Eri Dewa (Premio Faenzaex aequo 2011), Tomoko Sakumoto (2011).
Have to say that it was impressive to see such great pieces together. I really like Sakumoto's stripy bowls, made with a beautiful tecnique.

La galleria Jerome Zodo Contemporary è lieta presentare Circe creazioni in ceramica e sortilegio in  realtà aumentata, a cura di Alessandro Turci.
La mostra inaugura martedì 9 Aprile 2013 alle ore 18.00 presso la project room dello spazio di via Lambro 7 a Milano.
 
Jerome Zodo Contemporary Gallery is proud to present Circe, creations in ceramic and enchantment in increased reality, curated by Alessandro Turci.
The exhibition will be inaugurated on Tuesday, 9th April 2013, at 6.00 pm, at the Project Room of the space in Via Lambro 7, Milan.

We are trapped between the virtual and reality in a technological enchantment that, like the spell
cast by Circe, transforms us into what we really are. The domestic environment represented by
furnishings in white ceramic reminds us of our provenance from a reassuring known world in which
we live and interact. We are not in the presence of metaphors or symbols but common objects
consumed by a bulimic obsession, with the same maniacal ease with which we appropriate their
image. Tablets and i-phones are our present-day technological prosthetics, they amplify our
perception via a portal of infinite information and possibility. The white plate “Incanto”
(Enchantment) hanging on the wall, does not really have any decorations but virtual and ever-
changing combinations that the user composes with colourful flowers and butterflies visible in a
phantasmagorical vortex through the tablet. It is an ironic consideration of how outdated classical
decoration of ceramic work can be, above all, in relationship to the exasperated pace of
technological progress. “Offerta” (Offering) is just as sacred a tribute as that offered to Circe: a pure
white blaze of fruit and i-phones, also linked to the food that gives us nourishment, resting on a tablet
in golden ceramic like a votive tray. Three hundred plates are at the centre of the “Convivio”
(Banquet), where Circe delighted in her works of sorcery changing her guests into various animals
depending on their nature. Here, the remains of the banquet are randomly heaped, witness to just as
many mutations, heirs to a decadent fascination, by now abandoned to a viral and virtual mutation
that leaves no other path than that of a new and rethought interpretation. Resting or suspended
between two ambiguous realities, the viral proliferations light up threateningly of synthetic blue as do
some animal or plant species in nature to foresee danger and at the same time the fatal evident
attraction. Statically positioned in the theca of “Megaron” as verifiable phases of a natural and
inevitable process between the uncontaminated purity of the white objects up to their decomposing
and being utterly overwhelmed. The fulcrum of the phenomenon, determining focus of stability, is
without any further multimedia possibilities, motionless it rises like a simulacrum of the change that
has taken place. Protected by a theca just like a find of archaeology of art, it is open to being
examined in detail and to an attentive consideration that will be able to provoke interest and respect
in a painful, as much as inevitable, metamorphosis.
 
Tra virtuale e reale restiamo intrappolati in un incanto tecnologico che come il sortilegio di Circe ci
tramuta in ciò che veramente siamo. L’ambiente domestico rappresentato da suppellettili in ceramica
bianca ci ricorda la nostra provenienza dal rassicurante mondo conosciuto in cui viviamo e
interagiamo. Non siamo in presenza né di metafore né di simboli ma di comuni oggetti consumati
con ossessione bulimica, con la stessa maniacale facilità con cui ci appropriamo della loro
immagine. Tablet ed i-phone sono le nostre attuali protesi tecnologiche, amplificano le nostre
percezioni tramite un portale di infinite informazioni e possibilità. Il piatto bianco “Incanto” appeso
alla parete non ha in realtà decori ma virtuali e sempre diverse combinazioni che il fruitore comporrà
tra fiori e farfalle colorate visibili in un vortice fantasmagorico attraverso il tablet. Ironica
considerazione di quanto desueta possa essere la classica decorazione del manufatto in ceramica
soprattutto in rapporto all’esasperata velocità del progresso tecnologico. “Offerta” è tributo
altrettanto sacro come quello dedicato a Circe: candido tripudio di frutti e i-phone anch’essi
accomunati al cibo di cui ci nutriamo, poggiati su un tablet in ceramica dorata come un vassoio
votivo. Trecento piatti sono al centro del Convivio luogo in cui Circe si compiaceva dei suoi malefici
mutando gli ospiti in animali diversi a seconda del carattere di ciascuno. Qui i resti del banchetto
sono impilati alla rinfusa testimoni di altrettante mutazioni, eredi di un decadente fascino ormai
abbandonato ad una mutazione virale e virtuale che non lascia altra via se non quella di una nuova e
ripensata interpretazione. Poggiate o sospese tra due ambigue realtà le proliferazioni virali si
accendono minacciose di un blu sintetico com’è nella natura di alcune specie animali o vegetali a
presagire il pericolo ed al contempo la fatale conclamata attrazione. Staticamente riposte nella teca
del “Megaron” come fasi riscontrabili di un processo naturale ed inevitabile tra la purezza
incontaminata degli oggetti bianchi sino alla decomposizione e totale sopraffazione. Il fulcro del
fenomeno, focus determinante di stabilità è privo di ulteriori possibilità multimediali inerte si erge a
simulacro dell’avvenuto cambiamento. Protetto da una teca come reperto di archeologia dell’arte si
lascia esaminare nel dettaglio ad un’attenta considerazione che saprà suscitare interesse e rispetto in
una dolorosa quanto inevitabile metamorfosi.
