Juliana Cerqueira-Leite

(OH Object made by pushing clay  as far as reach could extend while standing in the same spot, then casting the result form in latex)
"The body is both the creator and subject of Juliana Cerqueira-Leite’s work. This Brazilian-American artist begins each sculpture or canvas by literally throwing herself into it – burrowing through huge blocks of clay, pouring plaster repeatedly over her body, and manipulating her paint-covered body over canvas panels. This very physical process leaves traces of the motion, dimensions, physical limitations and extremities of her body, and from these beginnings she makes her drawings, and her sculptures with metal, latex, wood and plaster."

Anna Maria Maiolino @ The Camden Arts Centre
01 April 2010 - 30 May 2010 Anna Maria Maiolino was born in Italy in 1946, but soon moved with her family to South America. She settled in Brazil during the 70's where she started her work as a respected artist. The critique of the Brazilian regime of those years speaks strongly from her wide range of production, films, photographs, sculptures and performances. Present at the same time in Milan with a retrospective on her 70's and 80's photographs, Maiolino has created an installation specifically for the Camden Arts spaces with hundreds of kilos of clay formed into rolls or balls. This basic ceramic shapes, each different from the other, react like individuals in society all different but all the same. Anna Maria Maiolino is relatively unknown in Europe and this seems like an unmissable occasion to get close to her work.
