CAL 2013 is coming a bit later than usual, the doors of the Royal College will be opening on the 12th of April. Warmer climate and a every year renewed program are a great temptation. Great artists are participating and the experience is enriched by the wonderful lectures exploring the diverse world of ceramics.

Ho scoperto molte novità grazie al sito della fiera internazionale dell'oggetto contemporaneo, meglio nota come Collect, che si terrà a Londra questo week end.

Se, come me, non sarete a Londra per sabato potete guardarvi la bella pubblicazione internet e dare una sbirciatina al catalogo degli espositori.
Durante la fiera saranno inoltre proiettati una serie di cortometraggi che riguardano il mondo dell'artiginato. Qui la lista completa. Purtroppo non sono visibili on-line ma spero presto che qualcuno si organizzi!!

Sempre a proposito di argilla su pellicola volevo parlarvi del Festival International du Film sur l'Argile et le Verre che si tiene ogni due anni Montpellier, per il 2012: Corum de Montpellier le date sono 30,31 Marzo e 1 Aprile.
Se avete qulache idea per un cortometraggio affrettatevi le domande si presentano entro il 176 settembre.

Thanks to the site of Collect, the international art fair for contemporary objects, I discovered many new and interesting things. If you, like me, are not going to be in London for this beautiful event check the fully on-line illustrated supplement on the fair and take a sneak peak at the catalogue. During the event onedotzero, the contemporary digital arts organisation presents craftwork a selection of 22 short films and animations. Unfortunately none are visible on-line but I am waiting patiently... About clay on Film, I want to remind you of the biannual International Festival of Films on Clay and Glass organised by Ateliers d’Art de France. Since its launch in 1998, the festival has supported and encouraged the creation and distribution of films about these materials, supporting their makers the world over. For On Screen, five critically acclaimed documentaries have been selected, representing both ancient tradition and contemporary making. The 8th International Festival of Films on Clay and Glass will be held on 30th March – 1st April 2012. If you want to take a chance...

Clay on Film

A Great Club !

Craft Club è un'iniziativa che ha lo scopo di promuovere il craft (scusate ma sapepete che sono allergica alla parola artigianato...) nelle scuole e nei centri educativi. Il generoso lavoro dei volontari rende questo serivizio gratuito permettendo ai bambini di usufruire di questo meraviglioso e fondamentale insegnamento.

Purtroppo è un'iniziativa inglese, paese che nel craft crede veramente, sia come importanza nella formazione scolastica sia come professione "seria". Dietro questa iniziativa c'è come al solito il mitico Craft Council.

Speriamo che qualcuno si faccia ispirare...

Craft Club is a national campaign that champions craft in schools and other educational centres.

Get your school, gallery or library crafting! All young people deserve access to a full range of fun and rewarding craft projects as part of their cultural learning. We can help by uniting skilled and enthusiastic volunteers with schools and venues through after-hours clubs. The generous support of our volunteers ensures Craft Club is available free-of-charge to schools/ venues in England.

As a national campaign to revive craft learning for the young generation, Craft Club is about reinforcing the value of craft in formal and informal education, not just as a vocational subject, but as beneficial its own right.

Making and craft activity are creative and inclusive – everyone can be successful and have a great time! We believe that craft in schools should highlight the transferable learning qualities that are developed (creativity, planning, critical thinking, communication skills, self-management and enterprise) and acquired by handling materials, tools and ideas in various projects. These transferable skills make studying craft an excellent choice at Higher Education level and beyond, with a range of career options available.

Ceramic Art London is on!!!


Questo è il week end del Ceramic Art London, e anche quest'anno non ci sarò...La cosa che più mi dispiace perdere è la serie di "talks" (conferenze) che si tengono al piano terra del Royal College of Art. Sempre interessanti e originali, sono un modo per confrontarsi con la realtà ceramica contemporanea e con artisti che lavorano in modi molto diversi.

Per farvi un esempio, stamattina si comincia con un tour del dipartimento di ceramica e vetro del RCA, luogo di massima delizia e fucina di giovani talenti, si prosegue nel pomeriggio con un doppio "case study" (studio del caso), a parlare saranno Katherine Morling, Susan O’Byrne. Le due ceramiste metteranno a confronto i loro inizi, illustreranno i loro lavoro e parleranno di come si vive di questo bellissimo lavoro.
Domani sarà il turno di Louisa Taylor e la sua linea da tavola prodotta al tornio, Sue Pryke che ha disegnato per Ikea e Sainsbury, James and Tilla Waters e la loro produzione limitata, e
Chris Keenan che parlerà della sua esperienza nei differenti rami della ceramica.
Si conclude domenica con Paul Scott che parlerà dell'uso dei transfer e delle sue opere più recenti, e Annie Turner parlerà della sua fonte di ispirazione l'estuario del Deben in Suffolk.

Ceramic Art London 2011 is on!!

Too bad I can't be there, apart from the wonderful atmosphere and the great artists on show, I will miss greatly the set of talks going on in the basement of the RCA. These talks are great chances for artist and ceramic lovers to open a window on contemporary ceramic production and on the different ways in which this practice is .
Starting today with A look behind the scenes: a tour of the Ceramics and Glass department of the Royal College of Art and Getting started – case study of two makers early in their career discussing their work, and professional practice with Katherine Morlingand Susan O’Byrne.

On Saturday the focus is on Looking at different modes of practice from high street design to the bespoke
Starts Louisa Taylor – hand thrown tableware, followed by Sue Pryke, designer for IKEA and Sainsbury’s , and James and Tilla Waters and their small batch production, ending with Chris Keenan - "Parallel lines - extending practice". Chris will explore his multifaceted career in ceramics working on different projects, looking at the experience gained, and lessons heeded.
On Sunday for Print and Pattern:
Paul Scott – ceramic print and recent commissions and Annie Turner – presentation Title: 'A River Runs Through it'.
Annie Turner Talks about the source which has guided her work for over a decade, the Deben estuary in Suffolk,where for many generations her family have lived and worked.

Back from London

Sono appena tornata da Londra, città che per me che vivo nella perfida Roma, dedica alla ceramica un'attenzione maggiore. Purtroppo malgrado il mio infinito amore per questa meravigliosa città sono rimasta un p0' delusa. Il mitico negozio dove mi approvvigionavo di materiali di tutti i generi PotteryCraft, non abita più lì e forse per colpa del momento difficile ha chiuso il negozio di Londra e vende prevalentemente on-line...percui niente conetti, liquidi strani, o polveri inquietanti. Cercando di consolarmi mi scapicollo a Somerset House, spettacolare edificioo neo-classico nel cuore di Londra che ospita oltre a uno stadio del ghiaccio nella stagione invernale anche la fanstica galleria Contemporary Ceramics...ma anche qui niente. La galleria è in fase di trasloco verso la nuova sede di Russell e fino a settembre neanche a parlarne, peccato bensavo già ai bei libri e a quell'indispensabile strumento in legno che mi hanno mangiato i cani...
Perfortuna mi sono consolata con il sempre sorprendente V&A e le nuove gallerie dedicate alla ceramica. La collezione di questo museo (GRATUITO) è qualcosa di unico con più di 3000 pezzi che narrano la storia della ceramica dagli albori. C'è di che rimanere strabiliati e merita sicuramente più di una visita...anzi a dire il vero potrei abitarci stabilmente infondo il letto di Enrico VIII sembra comodo. Non mi ricordavo della bellezza della serie in Jasperware di Wedgewood, impasti colorati creati nel1700 per imitare la porcellana e non smaltati, malgrado i temi neoclassici talvota un poco eccessivi non mi stanco di ammirarli. Questo museo crea dipendenza ma vi consiglio se non una visita in carne e ossa, almeno di navigare nel bellissimo sito.

Just back from London, which in my view is the greatest city for ceramics. Apparently I was a bit unlucky... my favourite ceramics shop, where I get the bits and pieces I don't find in Rome, has closed the London shop and now sells mainly over the internet... Trying to forget I rushed to the magnificent Somerset House for the Contemporary Ceramics gallery...CPA is on the move and has everything packed in boxes, so no change until September when opens the new space on Russell Street. :( Luckily there are few certainties in life and the Victoria and Albert Museum is one of those. Their ceramic collection is massive and leaves you breathless, more that 3000 pieces from the earliest ceramics to the most contemporary artists. If the new galleries are excellent the entire collection is utterly beautiful and really you can't get enough of it and is FREE ! I forgot the beauty of the Jasperware, a special stoneware body created in 1700 to emulate the finest porcelain and left unglazed...wow So if you think you can live without have a look at their site, careful is extremely addictive !

Anche quest'anno tutti pronti per la fiera dell'arte ceramica a Londra. Dal 26 al 28 Febbraio le sale del Royal College of Art saranno affollate da ceramisti professionali e da semplici estimatori. E' una bellissima esperienza sia per l'atmosfera, che per i numerovoli seminari che si tengono al piano inferiore. Nessuna presenza italiana quest'anno (nel 2009 ha esposto anche Luca Tripaldi), ma tra i 75 espositori molti sono i nomi familiari. Si tratta sempre di studio pottery, artisti che seguono l'opera in tutta la sua realizzazione.
