Blooming' New Work by Valéria Nascimento

Blooming' New Work by Valéria Nascimento

May 1st - May 31st 2014
Born in Brazil, 1962. I initially graduated with a degree in Architecture in 1985 helping me cement my interest in the fusion between urban landscapes and natural forms. I was introduced to clay a year later and became fascinated by its multiple possibilities for expression and the development of ideas.
My inspiration is drawn mostly from the natural world and porcelain has the smoothness and the malleability that I need to create new shapes, manipulating it to appear in some cases defiantly weightless. My work is about repetitive sequencing with separate elements to form a cohesive sculptural group. I am principally interested in large-scale wall installation projects.’

This is my fiftieth year as a shopkeeper and for the majority of that time I have been here in Uppingham. I continue to derive huge pleasure from the art but the real joy still comes from meeting and talking to you. Thank you again for your support and custom. I am also extraordinarily lucky to be able to work with such a great team and to have my eldest son Jay take over as MD this year. I hope you find something in our Christmas selection to interest you and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Gabriele Koch, London

Gabriele Koch

New Departures
13 September - 6 October 2012

"Gabriele Koch has established an international reputation for making, by hand, instantly recognisable forms: spheres, amphoras and bowls, burnished like old leather and given a special character by the decorative effects brought about by smoke in a sawdust kiln. But she has recently come to a turning point in her career. After a quarter of a century of perfecting and controlling the ethereal patterns which come from the smoke, a new development is on its way."

An auction of contemporary studio ceramics raising funds for the Craft Potters Charitable Trust
19th January—11th February 2012
January 2012 launches the second stage of the appeal for funds to develop the Contemporary Ceramics Centre. Funding the Future is an exhibition and auction featuring exclusive pieces donated by over 100 artists and will be an unique opportunity to see and to buy something very special.
Karen Bunting, CPA chair explains: “Funding the Future... is to raise funds for the development of all aspects of this ceramics centre and to create a successful and viable education programme based at Great Russell Street and at other venues around the country as appropriate... We have plans to develop training and career development, opportunities for makers at all stages of their careers and to encourage a wider appreciation of handmade ceramics. We believe that this will help to secure the future of British studio ceramics”.

London June 2011, 1 part

My visit to London was pleasurable and rewarding as usual, so much energy and peace in such a populated place ! I made some interesting discoveries, made new connections, and went back to admire the beauty of some great collections. The first trip was to Contemporary Ceramics, the gallery specialized in ceramics now in their new location in front at the British Museum. The gallery has an incredible showcase of artists producing a great variety of work, all of it of the best quality. An amazing surprise was the experience of Susan O'Byrne's sculptures. Foxes, badgers, little birds seemed just jump out from a children fairytale into the gallery space. Great !!
The exhibition space of the gallery was dedicated to the work of ceramist and calligrapher Mary White, also know author of "Lettering on Ceramics". Innovative and mysterious pieces.

Contemporary Ceramics

No news good news

Contemporary Ceramics is back in business in its brand new location in front of the British Museum. I am a bit sad about leaving the super beautiful Somerset House, but have to admit that the new gallery looks dashing. Unfortunately very few informations are being disclosed, only some photos on the fb page, but neither the site nor the blog have being updated. Pity ...have to wait a little longer... If only my Ceramic Review would regularly get to my door, I would be able to tell you more, but Poste Italiane seems very interested in reading it through before, if ever, deliver it to me. By the way yesterday I received a copy of New Ceramics, mmmhhhh feeling disappointed by graphic and photos.
