Gabriele Koch, London

Gabriele Koch

New Departures
13 September - 6 October 2012

"Gabriele Koch has established an international reputation for making, by hand, instantly recognisable forms: spheres, amphoras and bowls, burnished like old leather and given a special character by the decorative effects brought about by smoke in a sawdust kiln. But she has recently come to a turning point in her career. After a quarter of a century of perfecting and controlling the ethereal patterns which come from the smoke, a new development is on its way."

Silvia Calcagno Nero Sensibile

Phil Rogers A Portfolio

I had the chance to listen to a talk given by Rogers few years ago. He is a great ceramist, old style, living in countryside with big burning kilns and developing great glazes that seem easy to achieve...
I remember gingerly asking as if it would be possible to fire without having to use pyrometric cones, at the time I was living in Italy and high temp cones were very difficult to get. I won't forget that look...and every time I fire without the cones, which is more often than not, I feel that tiny bit of guilt.

Yasuhisa Kohyama

E' bellissimo

An exhibition of new work of master Yasuhisa Kohyama to coincide with the publication of 'Yasuhisa Kohyama : The Art of Ceramics' is opening on the 13th at Erskine, Hall & Coe,  London

authors:Susan Jefferies, Michael R.Cunningham, Yoshiaki Inui and Jack Lenor Larsen
publisher, ARNOLDSCHE

"The traditional wood-firing techniques of historical potters from his native Shigaraki, are evident in the work of Yasuhisa Kohyama. He has played an important part in reviving the use of the traditional Japanese "Anagama" wood fired kiln, being the first potter in the area to build such a kiln since medieval times.
Kohyama's powerful and sculptural work has been exhibited widely in Japan and overseas including at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Musée National de Ceramique Sèvres, France."( via Galerie Besson)

BCA 2012

The Biennale de la Céramique is a cultural event in Andenne taking place on Sunday and Whit Monday of each even year. The event, was created in 1988 and acquired over time a national and an international recognition.
The event wants to revitalize the industrial ceramic history of the city and builds bridges between people and contemporary artists.

During the event, and it’s extensions, all the city lives to the rhythm and colors of the ceramic : exhibition of contemporary ceramics in many places, international market of potters & ceramists, artist residency program, lectures, artists demonstrations, master classes, visits of schools, activities for children… all this find it’s proper place in the program.

Concentrated around three events and a dozen places in the city, the event organized since 2006 by the Cultural Centre, has strengthened its aspect as a link between the creation and access to art including actions related to ceramics, in conjunction with the Biennale, taking place throughout the year : ceramics courses for children and adults, themed exhibitions, master classes and lectures for professionals are now also on the agenda, reinforcing the Biennale event and giving the city a true character of Ceramics City.

Collect 2012

(Takahiro Kondo, Green Head)

"Great art and culture inspires us, brings us toghether and teaches us about ourselves and the world around us. In short it makes our lives better."

Collect 2012 starts in London on the 11th, a great event with the very best of contemporary craft. There are many interesting talks and presentation during the week end and for sure is an experience not to be missed. I, unfortunately won't be there, but the great catalogue on-line is a relieve.

the exhibition
More than 150 pieces from the long career of Josep Llorens Artigas can be seen in this exhibit until next September

Born in 1982 in Barcelona and deceased in 1980 in Gallifa, Artigas was one of the most important European ceramists in the 20th Century since 1920s, when with his nineteenth-century education he contributed to renew Western pottery by focusing on the glaze and putting the decoration aside.
Artigas began working in pottery motivated by the resurgence of this art in France and his fascination for the Chinese Song dynasty pottery (960-1279), and for half century he created pieces that we will see represented in “Artigas. L’home del foc” by more than 150 works that in chronological order go through his career and evolution, starting with what he himself considered a masterpiece, “Clar de lluna”, from 1927, and until the 1970s, when Artigas teamed up with Raoul Dufy and the very Joan Miró.
This exhibition is a unique opportunity to admire the artist’s works, because an exhibition so big hadn’t taken place in Barcelona for about 30 years. We will have his unique pieces, his author pieces, until next September 2nd at La Pedrera, from 10 am to 8 pm all week and with free entrance.
