Ceramics and the Human Figure, book

This is the present I got myself for Los Reyes ! (in Spain it's them not Santa Clause )
I don't normally work with the figure but sometimes I feel the urge to express myself in a more explicitly visual way.  Then shame comes along and I go back to minimalism...
Well here is a very good selection of artists making figurative works, I hope that they will infuse some courage in me.

Phil Rogers A Portfolio

I had the chance to listen to a talk given by Rogers few years ago. He is a great ceramist, old style, living in countryside with big burning kilns and developing great glazes that seem easy to achieve...
I remember gingerly asking as if it would be possible to fire without having to use pyrometric cones, at the time I was living in Italy and high temp cones were very difficult to get. I won't forget that look...and every time I fire without the cones, which is more often than not, I feel that tiny bit of guilt.

Remembering Emmanuel Cooper

Purtroppo sabato scorso ci ha lasciato un grande ceramista, critico, professore, direttore Emmanuel Cooper. Cooper è stato un personaggio fondamentale per la ceramica inglese, nato nel 1938 fa parte di quelli che vengono chiamati "studio potters" ma non si limita alla pratica. Emmanuel Cooper è membro della Craft  Potters  Association e co-fondatore, padre spirituale e direttore ( fino a poco tempo fa' ) della bellissima rivista Ceramic Review, e come dicono in redazione sarà difficile pensare alla ceramica inglese senza di lui.
Nel 2002 era stato nominato OBE, officer of the Order of the British Empire (Ufficiale dell'ordine dell'Impero Britannico)! 

Oltre alle sue ceramiche dai colori sgargianti e gli smalti cavillati, Cooper ha lasciato in eredita un notevole numero di libri e manuali che sono stati fondamentali per molti di noi, questo è il mio modo di ricordarlo

Il nuovo libro di Edmund de Waal è in cima alla lista, devo ammettere che non ho ancora terminato il suo titolo precedente "the Hare with the Amber Eyes" ma trattava di ceramica e mi sento scusata. Questa nuova uscita è "The Pot Book" un libro che documenta la storia della ceramica attraverso gli artisti, le scuole, gli stili. Organizzato in maniera alfabetica "The Pot Book" sarà un prezioso compagno da consultare nei preziosi momenti liberi.

"The Pot Book" the new book from acclaimed author and elegant potter Edmund de Waal is surely on my wish list. Edited by Phaidon (can't go wrong!) this book is a great documentation of the art of ceramics. I've already made the space on my bedside table !!!

"The history of ceramic art is ingrained in the history of mankind. Clay is one of the very first materials 'invented' by man. An essential part of our lives it has been moulded, thrown, glazed, decorated and fired for over 30,000 years in order to preserve and transport food and water. And it was on the surface of these early jugs, vases, dishes, plates, beakers and amphorae that man placed some of his first decorative markings. In more recent times clay has been used not just by artisans and potters, but also by artists, designers and architects. The New Artisans

Mi era già caduto l'occhio su questo libro uscito di fresco, l'argomento del Neo-Artigiano mi interessa particolarmente ma il look modaiolo mi rendeva titubante. L'autore Olivier Dupon ha un passato nella moda ( e si vede !) ma al momento si dedica alla rinascita dell'artigianato creativo dal suo blog Dossier37.
Ieri mi è capitato fra le mani e devo dire che malgrado non lo abbia comprato ( un altro libro è nella lista d'attesa), ho passato un po' di tempo a spulciarlo. 

Il look fa' un po' troppo rivista di moda e tutto le foto hanno un po' lo stesso stile, piacevole ma alla fine sembrano tutti uguali. Ed è un peccato perchè i 75 artigiani sono veramente bravi, e i loro prodotti meritano attenzione. La ceramica è ben rappresentata, c'è Mel Robson, IKUKO Iwamoto, Sissel Wathne ecc...insomma se vi capita dategli un' occhiata. Su FB c'è la pagina del libro con info e interviste x comparlo c'è il buon vecchio Amazon o Thames and Hudson

This book had already caught my eyes at first, finally yesterday I had the time to go through it. The book is cute, maybe even too cute (I like a bit nitty gritty !!!) but the 75 artisans are good as gold. These re-invention of the artisan is an interesting topic, that is very close to my heart, so welcome to this new book by blogger Olivier Dupon! (check his blog Dossier37)

Ceramics are well represented in the book with names like  Mel Robson, IKUKO Iwamoto, Sissel Wathne...
well it's defenetly worth more than a look !

In questi giorni, come molti, penso spesso a come siamo dipendenti dall'energia. Noi ceramisti ormai abituati alla comodità del forno elettrico, non ci accorgiamo neanche (se non quando arriva la bolletta!) di quanto quella simpatica creatura stia succhiando dalla rete. Fortunatamente i nuovi forni sono dotati di un isolamento più efficiente e questo permette un notevole risparmio di kw. Anche chi cuoce in un forno a gas non se la cava meglio, il gpl non sembra scendere di prezzo e la questione ambientale ci chiede, a ragione, più coscienza.

Ho trovato questo libro del 1982, sull'efficienza energetica per forni da ceramica. L'autore è Regis Brodie, Professore Emerito del Dipartimento di Arte del Skidmore College, stato di NY, e ceramista affermato. Brodie tiene anche delle conferenze su vari temi, tra cui quello dell'efficenza energetica nelle cotture a gas.

Se cuocete ad alta temperatura, attenti alla temperatura, si possono raggiungere gli stessi risultati anche scendendo di gradi. Io mi sono affidata alle ricette di "Glazes Cone 6" by Michel Bailey.

Per quanto mi riguarda continuerò ad alimentare il mio forno con i pannelli solari, tenendo la temperatura più bassa possibile, anche se cuocio la porcellana. Certo la porcellana, non è il più ecologico tra gli impasti...ma nessuno è perfetto !


In the past days I've been thinking often about fuel consumption, now that I am firing an electric kiln I rarely pay attention ( except when the bill arrives!) to how much electricity is my baby drinking. We all need to re-think our firings, the costs are getting higher and our eco-conscience is (hopefully) wakening up from a long sleep.

I found a book that is just about that "The Energy Efficient Potter". It was written in 1982 by Regis Brodie, Professor of Art of Skidmore College (NY) and master craftsman. Brodie travel the States giving conferences on different topics including energy efficency. More on his site

For all you out there firing cone 10 and feeling is time to lower the temperature, there are many useful books on glazes that help you obtaining the same results firing at cone 6. I have "Glazes Cone 6" by Michel Bailey

I will go on feeding my kiln (which is an eco-top, better insulation less waste) with solar panels, trying to keep the temperature as low as possible, even though I am firing porcelain. Porcelain is definitely not the most green of clays..., but nobody is perfect!

L'ultimo post era tutto dedicato a una ceramica molto minimalista di stampo orientale, ma la ceramica ha tante espressioni, diverse ma ugualmente affascinanti.
Il lavoro di Kate Malone è molto lontano dal minimalismo, è un mondo popolato da piante e frutti misteriosi e coloratissimi. Vasi grandi, enormi, panciuti, spinosi, smalti che colano, colori che si sovrappongono, cristalli, rami, riccioli, boccioli e chi più ne ha...
Ho ritrovato il suo lavoro in una serie bellissima di video che raccontano la creazione e lo sviluppo di una serie di questi meragliosi "vasoni". I suoi vasi le assomigliano in maniera incredibile, per forza vitalità e colore. Potete dare un'occhiata anche alla foto della sua ultima mostra, dove ci sono i vasi dei video, del Novembre 2010 nella galleria di Londra di Robilant+Voena.
Godetevi la visione e se volete approfondire c'è un libro (un po' datato) scritto nel 2003 insieme a Lesley Jackson: Kate Malone: A Book of Pots. Il libro traccia la storia di questa fantastica e innovativa ceramista, delle sue abilità tecniche e dei suoi meravigliosi smalti (pare ne abbia creato più di 1.000!!) Potete dare un'occhiata anche alla foto della sua ultima mostra, del Novembre 2010 nella galleria di Londra di Robilant+Voena.

KATE MALONE: New Work @ Robilant+Voena

My last post was entirely to a wonderful hue of a minimalist style of ceramics. At the other end of the creative spectrum there is the vibrant, dynamic and colourful work of Kate Malone. A real innovator among the contemporary taste, often tending to very similar models, Malone challenges nature (and gravity), with gigantic fruit-shaped pots of multiple colours. Her pots become human-like, everyone with its distinctive character and personality. Tall and slim, round and short, spiky and smooth, the seem to flourish eternally. Her work is splendidly documented in a series of videos that document the making of a number of large pots for her exhibition in November 2010 at Robilant+Voena in London. If you are interested there is a book written by Malone with Lesley Jackson, Kate Malone: A Book of Pots. The book follows the evolution of her dynamic career with 321 full-color photographs, and also reveals many of her innovations, detailing the specific techniques, glazes, and tools used in her work. I've heard she has a library of more than 1000 glazes !!!

Margaret O' Rorke ne avevamo già parlato, è un'artista eccezionale. Le sue bellissime installazioni in porcellana sono in continua evoluzione. Molte forme nascono dal tornio, prima passione della O'Rorke, e si trasformano in sculture grazie ad un uso sapiente della luce.

Susan Peterson
E' da qualche tempo che non parlo di libri, purtroppo fuori da internet è difficile venire a contatto con nuove pubblicazioni e si finisce a rileggere quello che si ha sottomano.
Il libro di Susan Peterson "Fare Ceramica" è uno di quei testi importanti sopratutto perchè si trova in Italiano e apre a tecniche sperimentali si nella creazione di smalti ed engobi che nella fase di cottura. Grazie a lei ho avuto il coraggio di spingere il mio forno, e malgrado qualche piccolo incidente, diminuire sensibilmente le ore di cottura. La Peterson dice che con il forno a fiamma rovesciata da lei progettato cuoceva ad alta temperatura in 4 ore e mezza! Aldilà della progettazione del proprio forno, pratica che non è sicuramente per tutti, il libro dedica molto spazio ai test e da' utili informazioni su tecniche diverse, fornendo delle valide ricette.
Purtroppo questo è l'unico testo dell'autrice disponibile in Italiano ma vi consiglio anche "The Craft and Art Clay" testo di qualche anno precedente al "Fare Ceramica" e il libro, sempre dell'autrice "Shoji Hamada: A Potter's Way & Work". La Peterson era anche un'esperta della ceramica i Nativi Americani, di cui ha curato mostre e ha scritto diversi libri.













Susan Peterson was a great source of inspiration in my earlier days, her practicality and strive for experimentation led me, not without some small accident, to radically reduce the firing circle of my kiln. Susan Peterson had a family and understood that time was a major problem for many of us. I felt, for once understood. Ceramics is a great practice but very time consuming !
Her books are rich but written in no fuss-style, and I keep on going back to them. You can peek inside "The Craft and Art of Clay" and have an idea of the wide range of technique and artists covered by this wonderful book. I recommend also the other books by the author, like "Working with Clay" and "Shoji Hamada: A Potter's Way and Work" (even if I prefer the one written by Bernard Leach !). Susan Peterson was also an expert on Native Americans and Pueblo pottery.

A Potter's Book by Bernard Leach

Queste sono le parole di Bernard Leach, maestro ceramista e padre della ceramica inglese moderna. leach era nato in Cina, era stato educato in Inghilterra e successivamente era tornato in estremo oriente per insegnare tecniche di incisione. Nel 1911, ad una festa in un giardino a Tokyo vide gli ospiti decorare e cuocere vasi con la tecnica Raku. Questa esperienza lo segnò e presto trovò un maestro ceramista Kenzan VI e studiò duramente presso di lui fino alla morte di quest'ultimo. Leach e Tomimoto, un altro studente esplorarono la fusione tra la ceramica inglese e le tecniche raku. Negli anni '20 tornò in Inghilterra dove cominciò il suo sodalizio con il maestro giapponese Shoji Hamada e nacque la celebre Leach Pottery. Bernard Leach ha fatto più di qualunche altro per la ceramica moderna non solo in termini di tecniche, la sua attenzione dava alla ceramica un'aspetto in più, non solo artigianato ma anche filosofia.

Bernard Leach was born in Hong Kong, he was educated in England and later returned to Japan as a teacher of etching techniques. In 1911, at a garden party in Tokyo, he saw guests decorating raku pots and fired them, this experience had a great impact on him. Leach studyied under the direction of Shigekichi Urano (Kenzan VI), there he met Tomimoto, another of Kenzan’s students, together they explored the fusion of English pottery traditions with Raku. When he returned to England in 1920 he established the famous Leach Pottery with another Japanese artist and potter, Shoji Hamada. Leach’s fame spread over the years, and now he is recognized as the major influence in modern pottery all over the world.
This is his most famous book, with plenty of technical information, but most importantly with his vision on ceramics.

Ho trovato questo libro di Virginia Scotchie molto utile nella pianificazione di un laboratorio più efficente e funzionale, che guarda con attenzione ad ogni aspetto della creazione di un'opera ceramica. Chi di noi non si è trvato inguaiato da cattive pianificazione e disattenzioni varie ? Certo sbagliando si impara, ma almeno partiamo con il piede giusto!

Un libro visivo ed informativo, che illustra le opere accanto a foto professinali dei laboratori, e un ben scritto riassunto sull'artista. Questo libro dà la possibilità di analizzare contemporaneamente il lavoro di un gruppo di artisti tra i più interessanti, rendendolo accessibile ad un largo pubblico di amanti della ceramica.

Correlato da bellissime immagini, è diviso in 5 capitoli ognuno dedicato ad un particolare uso della ceramica. La copertina è dedicata a Barnaby Barford, ceramista inglese che recupera vecchie statuette in porcellana con cui ricrea nuovi ironici scenari. Malgrado non troppo approfondito questo libro apre una finestra sui diversi aspetti e le diverse possibilità della ceramica contemporanea. Da Novembre fa parte della mia libreria.

Ora il suo autore Richard Jacobs è entrato nel mondo del blog continuando a tenere acceso l'interesse per temi a noi così imporatanti. Vi traduco una frase del libro sempre sull'argomento successo. Several posts ago we spoke about an unusual book on the ceramic shelf, "Searching for Beauty" that came out a couple of years ago. This book is a collection of letter sent by Richard Jacobs, a ceramic lover and collector, to ceramist Christa Assad. In the book the original point of view of Jacobs raises many very good questions. Lettere di un Collezionista ad una Ceramista

Richard Jacobs è un collezionista di ceramiche, Christa Assad una ceramista. Nel 2002 Jacobs in vacanza con la moglie entra nel negozio di Christa Assad, compra un suo pezzo, scambiano qualche parola ed esce. Dopo alcuni mesi Christa riceve la prima lettera di una corrispondenza che andrà avanti per cinque anni, producendo oltre 700 pagine. Ispirato da "Lettere ad un Giovane Poeta" di R.M. Rilke, Jacobs inizia una corrispondenza con la giovane ceramista. Nelle lettere che i due si scambieranno si parlera di ceramica ma sopratutto di vita, nelle tante domande che l'instancabile Jacobs si pone, troveranno posto le immagini più diverse. Il risultato è affascinante, la bellezza sempre sfuggente appare in luoghi insoliti, guidandoci in un viaggio attraverso la mente di un collezionista immerso nell'esperienza estetica.

Letters from a Collector to a Studio Potter

Richard Jacobs is a ceramic collector, Christa Assad is a potter. In 2002 Jacobs on a holiday with his wife, enters the shop of Christa Assad, buys one of her pieces, has a brief conversation with her and leaves. After few months Christa recieves the first of many letters that will follow during the course of the next five year, producing more than 700 pages. Inspired by "Letters to a Young Poet" by R.M. Rilke, Jacobs starts a correspondence with the young potter. In the letters he talks about ceramic, but above all, of life, in the many questions that the restless Jacobs ask himself very diverse images gather. The result is facinating, elusive beauty appears in the most unusual places, guiding us through the mind of a collector immersed in the aesthetic experience.
