Call for Submission, Human Figure

Lark Crafts seeks images to publish in a new collection of figures in clay, to be juried by Nan Smith. While artwork may be abstract to some degree, each piece must be based on and recognizable as the human form. Artists may submit images for up to two original works with three details of each piece.

Entries must be submitted by February 8, 2013.

Freud and Ceramics

The Freud Museum, at 20 Maresfield Gardens in Hampstead, was the home of Sigmund Freud and his family when they escaped Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938. It remained the family home until Anna Freud, the youngest daughter, died in 1982. The centrepiece of the museum is Freud's study, preserved just as it was during his lifetime.

Artist and ceramicist Christie Brown responds to the Freud Museum in two key ways. Firstly, Brown is intrigued by the significance and nature of Freud’s large collection of figurative antique artefacts. Her second focus is on the idea that since human beings project a range of emotions onto objects, these objects have a life of their own. Drawing parallels between falling asleep and leaving the museum or studio, she suggests that inanimate objects may become animated in ways that are beyond our control, like dreams.

This is an exhibition that had a great impact. In these last times has grown in me the need to experience art that has a strong social connotation. Death row is a very strong subject and this poetic display of painted last meals is intensely moving.
Julie Green's approach to a very difficult reality gives us a different point of view and this is when the artist is more successful.

Ferrin Gallery is seeking 20 artists over and 20 artists under the age of 40 for Ceramic Top 40 | 2013. 

This exhibition will present the "IT" artists currently working in conceptual utilitarian and sculptural ceramics. The show seeks to identify those working on the cutting edge of current processes, ideas and presentation concepts by both the up-and-coming generation of artists and established artists who are breaking new ground. One artist from the group exhibition will be awarded a solo show during 2014.

 

Applications are due February 1, 2013.

The exhibit ME@V&A mounted by internationally renowned ceramicist and scholar Michelle Erickson, presents works she created during her Ceramics Residency at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the world’s greatest museum of art and design, in London, from July to September, 2012. The V&A article announcing her residency acknowledged" Erickson’s worldwide recognition “for her mastery of lost ceramic arts during the age of exploration and colonialism. Her contemporary work makes use of these arcane ceramic techniques to create historical narratives about political, social, and environmental issues – both past and present".

COVET/Contemporary Ceramic Art using Historical Sources presents the works of leading contemporary ceramicists assembled by gallerista and curator Leslie Ferrin, reprising a highly successful Project produced by Ferrin and ARTBerkshire in the summer of 2012; COVET Art & Objects. COVET was summer-long series of exhibitions and events across the Berkshires focused on the direct relationship between contemporary artists and historic artwork in museum collections. COVET at the New York Ceramics Fair will include works by Christa Assad, Michelle Erickson, Molly Hatch, Giselle Hicks, Sergei Isupov, Frances Palmer, Mara Superior and Jason Walker.

I don't normally work with the figure but sometimes I feel the urge to express myself in a more explicitly visual way.  Then shame comes along and I go back to minimalism...
