Freud and Ceramics

23 November 2012 - 10 February 2013
The Freud Museum, at 20 Maresfield Gardens in Hampstead, was the home of Sigmund Freud and his family when they escaped Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938. It remained the family home until Anna Freud, the youngest daughter, died in 1982. The centrepiece of the museum is Freud's study, preserved just as it was during his lifetime.

Christie Brown

DreamWork

Artist and ceramicist Christie Brown responds to the Freud Museum in two key ways. Firstly, Brown is intrigued by the significance and nature of Freud’s large collection of figurative antique artefacts. Her second focus is on the idea that since human beings project a range of emotions onto objects, these objects have a life of their own. Drawing parallels between falling asleep and leaving the museum or studio, she suggests that inanimate objects may become animated in ways that are beyond our control, like dreams.

Ceramics and the Death Row

The Last Supper: 500 Final Meals of US Death Row Inmates
a project by Julie Green

The Arts Center is located at 700 SW Madison Avenue in Corvallis, Oregon

This is an exhibition that had a great impact. In these last times has grown in me the need to experience art that has a strong social connotation. Death row is a very strong subject and this poetic display of painted last meals is intensely moving.
Julie Green's approach to a very difficult reality gives us a different point of view and this is when the artist is more successful.

New York Ceramics Fair

Great exhibitions during the Ceramic Art Fair NY !!

Past as Prologue in contemporary ceramic arts frames the presentation of two extraordinary special exhibits at the 2013 New York Ceramics Fair taking place in the ballroom of the Bohemian National Hall at 321 East 73Stbetween First and Second Avenues, January 23-27.

Michelle Erickson, Black & Blue Teapot, 2001
The exhibit ME@V&A mounted by internationally renowned ceramicist and scholar Michelle Erickson, presents works she created during her Ceramics Residency at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the world’s greatest museum of art and design, in London, from July to September, 2012. The V&A article announcing her residency acknowledged" Erickson’s worldwide recognition “for her mastery of lost ceramic arts during the age of exploration and colonialism. Her contemporary work makes use of these arcane ceramic techniques to create historical narratives about political, social, and environmental issues – both past and present".

Ceramics and the Human Figure, book

This is the present I got myself for Los Reyes ! (in Spain it's them not Santa Clause )
I don't normally work with the figure but sometimes I feel the urge to express myself in a more explicitly visual way.  Then shame comes along and I go back to minimalism...
Well here is a very good selection of artists making figurative works, I hope that they will infuse some courage in me.
Figurative work rocks !
Here is the author's web: Edith Garcia

"Why work with the figure in clay today?"

from Amazon

The human figure has been represented in clay throughout history and continues to evolve today. Artists are working with the figure in new ways, playing with materials and forms, and making use of new technologies to produce challenging and unconventional work, from the intact whole figure to the fragmented, hybrid and abstract. Ceramics and the Human Figure profiles an international range of ceramic artists, all practising within the fields of installation and sculpture. Divided by broad themes, each chapter features a variety of different expressive works. The book explores the methods of six key artists, using how-to images to illustrate their techniques. For artists, collectors, and anyone interested in these themes, Ceramics and the Human Figure is an exciting survey of the state of the figure in clay today.
