Secret Garden

IN A SECRET GARDEN
Serra Francese dell’ORTO BOTANICO di Roma
Sabato 11 e Domenica 12 Giugno 2011
artisti:
Antonio Grieco, Fiori del Meccano
Sabine Pagliarulo, Bagatelle
Jasmine Pignatelli, Semi e Radici

Sabine Pagliarulo
artists: Antonio Grieco, Fiori del Meccano Sabine Pagliarulo, Bagatelle Jasmine Pignatelli, Semi e Radici A beautiful exhibition that conjugates two of my great passion, ceramic and nature. In the superb location of the Orto Botanico, nature inspired ceramic pieces come to life in the frame of French Conservatory. I've asked the curator of the exhibition, Maria Luisa Acierno to tell us more about the pieces on show. "The pieces and the space around... buds like dragonflies, seeds and roots living under the surface, animated flowers, assembled and dismantled, branches, leaves and stones...ceramic sculptures and installations reinterpreting signs of Nature and making it visible, using clay together with other materials, like wood and reclaimed oxidised iron marked by the passing of time... Basic forms, vivid colours, black and white contrast, rough surfaces, burnished, glazed... Every piece is born out of the struggle between material and technique, both used to create a new impression in a unique environment, the French Conservatory, which becomes a privileged place to observe trough Art and Nature, the world...inside and outside of us." http://secretgarden-lamostra.blogspot.com

Summer at Bevere

"The Gallery at Bevere on the outskirts of Worcester shows the best of modern/British studio ceramics, along with paintings, glasswork and other crafts in an intimate setting. A regional gallery showing national and international artists!" - David Whiting, Crafts Critic

I love the Gallery at Bevere and I am tremendously envious of their reality. The gallery is very active, bringing tremendous artists out of the cities' circuit. The calendar is exciting hosting more than one show at the same time. The Gallery is supported by both the Art and the Craft Council.
This is what the have on show now:

Porcelain Jewellery in Paris

Marion Delarue, Collier

Karin Seufert
Many, among us, are getting their hands into the field of contemporary jewellery. The vibe that comes from the world of designer's jewellery has pervaded the world of ceramics. The jewels created are little pieces of Art that fuse form and substance and wearable as well ! Have a look at the fantastic artists featured in Bijoux de Porcelain et Plus, at Galerie Hélène Porée in Paris. Viewable on line

Special Viewing - Tuesday 23 February, 5.00-7.30pm

Robert Dawson, Ikuko Iwamoto, Philip Li, Nicola Malkin, Sara Radstone, Bodo Sperlien and Julian Stair

Intersecting Disciplines presents recent work of seven contemporary artists and designers, graduates of the Ceramics BA Honours course at Camberwell College of Arts in a period from 1978 through to 2009. The range of these professional practices represents the continuing evolving nature of the subject; from that of the studio ceramicist, industrial designer, commissioned public art, installation and performance artist. The points of 'intersections' are numerous in terms of an awareness of craft skill, the discipline and understanding of material and process, scale, context, design and conceptual issues and is a timely reminder of the creative use of the medium of Ceramics.

CV in New York

Sorry for the absence of these past days, but we all know that time runs fast in the Big Apple!
But on my behalf I have some exceptionally good material to show you. I went to see Akio Takamori at Barry Friedman gallery and I am still enchanted. The work inspired by Alice In Wonderland and the Venus, takes a bizarre oriental twist. The statues big and scary, seem to hide some terrible secret under the opaque layers of underglaze. Takamori is great master and this show is a clear evidence of that.
Waiting for more have a long look at the show www.barryfriedmanltd.com

Finnish Ceramics in London

Kati Tuominen-Niittyla@GalerieBesson

Grazie Galerie Besson

As usual Galerie Besson is of inspiration. The exhibition scheduled for the month of September takes us up to the land of Finland. Four artists, all living and working around Helsinki, open us a window on the best of contemporary Finnish ceramics. The strong simplicity of the work, and the use of the various techniques, speak of the artist's strong sense of nature and of Finland peculiar atmosphere. The exhibition is fully illustrated on-line. Thank you Galerie Besson!

Anthony Shaw Collection

room view n. 9 @Anthony Shaw Collection

A Collection of Love
The couturier Anthony Shaw has been collecting for over 30 years wonderful ceramic pieces especially among the production of the British Studio Pottery. This term represent a way of working, artists alone or in small groups creating a unique production of few pieces followed during the entire process by the artist/s. In the lovely 19th Century house on Billing Place in London, we can admire work from Lucie Rie and Hans Coper, Ian Godfrey, Jim Malone and many others. I love the idea of being able to view an exhibitions, especially a collection, outside the white gallery wall, in the rooms you can still breath the emotions that the pieces have created and still create. At the moment, John Christian, art historian and auction house Christie's consultant, is paying a tribute to the purest form of collecting, the one only guided by the heart. He created a little exhibition in the room at 11 Billing Place.

Telling Tales

Telling Tales

Fantasy and Fear in Contemporary Design

At the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, a new exhibition on contemporary design opened yesterday. The creations on show, make the bordeline between art and design a little thinner. Everyday objects are transformed in modern totem, scary and fascinating at the same time. With the exhibition, the V&A has created a truly entertaining microsite, that recreate the atmosphere of the exhibition.

Kintsugi

celadon bowl, Korea, Koryo dynasty, 12th century AD, repaired in Japan

The Aesthetic of Accidents

Kintsugi means "to patch with gold", this Japanese tecnique may have begun in the late 15th century, when a famous shogun sent a damaged Chinese tea bowl back to China to be fixed. It returned held together with ugly metal staples, so Japanese craftsmen had to find a form of repair that could make a broken piece look as good as new, or better. The results were so astonishing that Japanese collectors were accused of deliberately breaking prized ceramics, just to have them mended in gold. Kintsugi (only referring to gold lacquer, but the repairs can be made in different colors) had the great merit, to give new life to pots that were ready to be trashed reaching a new level of aestethic.
