La mostra "CREATIVITA' CERAMICA ITALIANA - Tante tradizioni e pratiche in una" si svolgerà a Vilnius nella capitale della Lituania.

Separati dalla Nascita
Ogni tanto mi capita di vedere lavori che si somigliano molto o addirittura uguali, nessuno di noi è immune dall'ispirazione del lavoro altrui, ma cosa pensare di chi produce lavori completamente identici ? Non si tratta necessariamente di copiare, ma se la forza di un artista si basa sulla forma e il colore molto riconoscibile in tutte le opere come ci sipone quando qualcun'altro fa le stesse cose ? Spesso si tratta di artisti appartenenti a realtà completamente diverse anagrafiche e di luogo, ma in un modo globalizzato qusto e poco importante.
Ho deciso di mostrarvi alcuni artisti, per usare un'eufemismo, molto simili, non tanto per additare copioni coscienti e non, ma per renderci conto quanto nessuno di noi sia immune.
Se vi vengono in mente altri gemelli fatemelo sapere !

Often I stumble on very similar works, sometimes is more than similarity...
Nobody is truly genuine, we all, willingly or not, get inspiration from the outside world. But it strikes me when you see two almost identical pieces...are they just naive ? Can you build the strength of you work on shape and colour that is identically used by someone else ? A lot of ceramist don't surf as much as I do, so maybe they are not even aware... different continent, different age, who knows ?
This will be a new feature and it's going to be a lot of fun ! But don't get crossed nobody is free from guilt !

BAM Biennial 2010: Clay Throwdown!
The BAM Biennial, a juried exhibition at the Bellevue Arts Museum (BAM), Bellevue, WA brings attention and exposure to the work of contemporary artists in the Pacific Northwest. The Museum designates a concentration for each exhibition whether it is a specific medium, technique, process, or theme; the focus of this year’s exhibition is clay. Stefano Catalani, director of curatorial affairs/artistic director at Bellevue Arts Museum, looks at the work of the 34 artists selected for the inaugural exhibition.

Archie Bray FoundationIn 2011, the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, MT will celebrate 60 years of leadership in the international ceramics community; and will commemorate the anniversary with the exhibit, 2011: From the Center to the Edge, 60 Years of Creativity and Innovation at the Archie Bray Foundation. The exhibit at SOFA features the work of Bray artists that will participate in the 60th anniversary exhibition.

A Chosen Path:
The Ceramic Art of Karen KarnesRenowned ceramic artist Karen Karnes has created some of the most iconic pottery of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Peter Held and Mark Shapiro will provide insights into her work. Shapiro has been a studio potter for nearly three decades and is the editor of the newly-released monograph, A Chosen Path: The Ceramic Art of Karen Karnes, published by University of North Carolina Press.

In artist Gerry Eskin’s world, big is best. His ceramic works include towering columnar forms and massive anthropomorphic vessels informed by Middle Eastern sarcophagi. Eskin’s large-scale panoramic prints depict the spectacular geological formations and desert landscape vistas near Moab, Utah. Monumental in scale, the ceramic pieces and photographic panels create an environmental installation exploring sacred mountain landscapes and their relation to burial rituals.

Claudi Casanovas, Memorial als Vencuts

Ho accenato nel precendente post al lavoro di Claudi Casanovas, ma mi sembrava giusto parlare più approfonditamente del lavoro di questo incredibile artista.
Catalano classe 1956, Casanovas si è dedicato allo studio del teatro prima di approdare alla ceramica. Membro del Coure Potters’ Cooperative dal 1978 al 1987 , nel 1992 vince il primo premio alla terza edizione della International Ceramics Competition di Mino, in Giappone. Molti musei in giro per il mondo hanno esposto le sue opere e nel 2004 ha vinto il concorso per la creazione di un monumento in memoria dei caduti del fascismo a Olot. L'opera, intitolata Memorial als Vencuts (In Memoria dei Caduti) è stata installata nel Giugno 2006.

Il lavoro di Casanovas è ben riconoscibile mi ricordo di essermi soffermata diversi anni fa, sulla lettura di un' intervista dove lo stesso Casanovas spiega l0 strano procedimento nella creazione dei suoi massi. Queste opere hanno spesso l'aspetto di formazioni geologiche naturali e semprano non dover niente all'intervento umano. Niente di più lontano dalla realtà, mi ricordo che Casanovas spiegava di usare grandi celle frigorifere per gelare la creta, e poi con una gru faceva cadere questi grossi blocchi a terra creando movimento senza distruggere la forma. Insomma un lavoro da macho, forse anche grazie sangue catalano, Casanovas si dedica a forme grandi e forti, dure e complesse, ma anche piene di fascino.

Queste sono le parole di Casanovas:

" All'interno del Monumento verrano tenuti come simbolo diari, lettere, memoriali e poemi...scritti dalle persone che hanno vissuto la Guerra Civile Spagnola dalla parte della Repubblica. ...Questo è il simbolo della guarigione del nostro passato, della nostra storia e della nostra libertà."

Il Monumento è stato creato in due anni da 15 tonnelate di creta e poi racchiuso in una scatola di cemento. Per vedere le fasi della lavorazione visitate il sito della Galerie Besson

I spoke briefly about Casanovas work in my previous post, but I think is important to give to this great artist the space he deserves.

Claudi Casanovas was born in 1956. He first studied for the theatre in Barcelona, then trained as a ceramist in Olot (Catalonia). He was a member of the Coure Potters’ Cooperative from 1978 to 1987. In 1992 he won first prize at the III International Ceramics Competition in Mino, Japan. Recent major international exhibitions have included those at the Roman Museum in Nyon, Switzerland, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Oostende, Belgium and Kunstforum, Kirchberg, Switzerland. In 2004 he won a competition to create a monument against Fascism in Olot. The piece, entitled Memorial als Vençuts, was installed in June 2006. Since the monument Casanovas has been exploring the medium of print. His aquatint series “Aürt” and his large scale etchings “Arbol - Inmovilidad en el paisaje” have been exhibited in the UK and America with the gallery.

Casanovas work is highly recongnizable, his big blocks of clay seem to belong more to the world of geological phenomenon than the work of human hands. They are big and strong, though but full of meaning and emotions. Is the work of a tough Catalan men. I remember reading an interview where Casanovas was explaining some of his methods of working. They involved huge freezers and a crane. The clay was first freezed and then dropped on the floor so it would crack maintaining its shape... not for the faint-hearted.
These are his words on this great monument:

Inside The War Memorial--1936~1978--just as a symbolic will be kept: diaries, letters, memories, poems,...written by people who lived during the Spanish Civil War from the Republican side. In this way we will symbolize the full recovery of our past, our history, our present freedom.

It was created over a two-year period from 15 tonnes of clay and encased in a concrete shell. It stands alongside the Fluvià River in Olot and was commissioned by the the Municipality of Olot-Girona-Catalunya-Spain

Torno a parlarvi di John Evans e di raku per farvi sapere che ci sono ancora posti liberi per il corso 'Alternative Raku' 20-23 maggio. I corsi hanno luogo in un grazioso paesino del West Sussex e sono per un massimo di 10 persone. Gli argomenti affrontati saranno , naked raku, uso di sali e cloruri, saggar firing, terra sigillata e pittura con il fumo.

John Evans, master of alternatives firings, is giving a worskshop in May. From the 20th to the 23rd in Angmering a pretty Sussex village ,in the U.K. The focus will be on glaze-resist raku, aka 'naked raku', with an introduction to horse-hair raku,ferric chloride in tin-foil saggars, and using various chemical salts in paper-slip saggars. The workshop will look at the use of burnishing and terra sigillata to provide the smooth and polished surface ideal for these 'naked clay' techniques. There will be tips on how to make work for successful firing, how to achieve those solid blacks and whites and the use of colour in naked raku. We will look at different resist techniques suitable for enhancing your own work when 'painting with smoke'

Sfogliando i giornali, ho trovato molto interessante la linea di piatti di Piet Hein Eek. Con il contributo della moglie, che è ceramista, questo designer olandese ha ridato vita a vecchi servizi spaiati coprendoli con il medesimo smalto, lo stesso blu lascia trasparire fiori o motivi geometrici.













This is a fun idea ! If you have mixed and matched plates sets why not cover them with a new glaze and give them a new life ? This is a project by dutch designer Piet Hein Eek and his ceramist wife Jeanine.

Ai Wei, Sunflower Seeds

Avevo guardato la foto, sono una fan della Tate (vecchia, nuova e pure quella di Liverpool!), avevo trovato carina l'idea anche se già usata...ma non mi ero accorta di niente...Porcellana ?! Grazie a Rita Miranda che ha postato su fb il link mi sono resa conto di cosa mi era passato sotto gli occhi, migliaia di semi di girasole in porcellana, meraviglia !

Ai Weiwei, una tra i migliori concettuali cinesi e sincero critico socio-culturale, ha preso l'incarico per l'undicesima realizzazione del La Serie Unilever.
Milioni di semi di girasole tutti apparentemente identici, ma in realtà unici. Per quanto possano apparire reali questi semi a grandezza naturale sono stati formati e dipinti a mano singolarmente da artigiani cinesi di Jingdezhen specializzati in piccoli lavori. Diversamente dalla produzione di massa, sono il frutto di centinaia di mani esperte.
Versati all'interno della Turbine Hall ( l'enorme area centrale del museo, ex spazio industriale) i 100 milioni di semi formano un panorama infinito. Sunflower Seeds è un'installazione sensoriale ed immersiva (...che si fonda sulla portata narrativa degli oggetti, sugli effetti provocati dal loro accostamento), che possiamo toccare, su cui camminare e sentirli spostarsi sotto i nostri piedi. Il fatto stesso di poterci camminare contrasta con l'immenso sforzo della produzione e la natura preziosa del materiale. La porcellana è sinonimo di Cina e per farlo funzionare Ai Wei ha manipolato antichi metodi artigianali che appartengono storicamente alle esportazioni cinesi più pregiate. Sunflower seeds invita a guardare più attentamente al fenomeno del Made in China e alla geo-politica degli scambi culturali ed economici di oggi.

Amazing installation of Chinese artist Ai Wei at Tate Modern
Ai Weiwei, one of China’s leading Conceptual artists and an outspoken cultural and social commentator, has undertaken the eleventh commission in The Unilever Series.
Sunflower Seeds is made up of millions of small works, each apparently identical, but actually unique. However realistic they may seem, these life-sized sunflower seed husks are in fact intricately hand-crafted in porcelain. Each seed has been individually sculpted and painted by specialists working in small-scale workshops in the Chinese city of Jingdezhen. Far from being industrially produced, they are the effort of hundreds of skilled hands.
Poured into the interior of the Turbine Hall’s vast industrial space, the 100 million seeds form a seemingly infinite landscape. Sunflower Seeds is a sensory and immersive installation, which we can touch, walk on and listen to as the seeds shift under our feet. The casual act of walking on the work’s surface contrasts with the immense effort of production and the precious nature of the material. Porcelain is almost synonymous with China and, to make this work, Ai Weiwei has manipulated traditional methods of crafting what has historically been one of China’s most prized exports. Sunflower Seeds invites us to look more closely at the ‘Made in China’ phenomenon and the geo-politics of cultural and economic exchange today.

Francesco Ardini – ardidesign, in questa occasione presenterá al pubblico i suoi ultimi lavori. Ardini utilizza l'antica tecnica che prevede l'uso congiunto di terra e acqua, l'artista crea ceramiche eleganti plasmando la materia e dando origine a forme che, pur essendo strettamente radicate nella realtà, assumono tratti disomogenei ed estranianti.

XI Fiera Internazionale della Ceramica di Firenze

In Piazza SS. ANNUNZIATA a FIRENZE sabato 2 e Domenica 3 ottobre si terrà l’ XI EDIZIONE della Fiera Internazionale della Ceramica, la mostra di ceramiche artistiche contemporanee.
Dalle ore 10 alle ore 19, saranno presentati i lavori di circa 60 ceramisti italiani ed europei che regaleranno un spettro rilevante della produzione della ceramica contemporanea. Si troveranno oggetti di uso e arredamento, sculture e bijoux in ceramica. Si conosceranno le diverse tecniche di realizzazione: dall’immediatezza del raku, storica tecnica giapponese impiegata per la cerimonia del tè, alla tranquillizzante durezza del gres, tipico dei territori nordeuropei, dall’ esuberanza e malleabilità della maiolica, tipica della regione mediterranea, alla ricercata peculiarità del lustro, e l’ elegante porcellana.
Vi saranno anche laboratori per i bambini, per adulti, mostra fotografica sulla cottura tradizionale a legna sarda, l’ introduzione al progetto “ L’eco-bottega del ceramista” in collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Ambientale - Università di Firenze.

Prosegue Keramikos a Bracciano, con il 3 OTTOBRE FESTA RAKU dalle 10 in poi, dietro il chiostro.

Ceramics Monthly dedica la copertina di questo mese ad Steven Young Lee, 'Resident Artistic Director' della mitica Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. Il lavoro di questo interessante ceramista di origine coreana ma cresciuto a Chicago, parte dell'idea di individualità e da come la sua eredità orientale si sia fusa con la sua educazione americana.
Il risultato è bellissimo, peccato non sia riuscita a trovare un suo sito...


Steven Young Lee is the Resident Artist Director of the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. Lee is a Chicago native with a Korean heritage. One of his works is on the cover of Ceramics Monthly, a beautiful combination of oriental tradition and American modernity. These vases are beautiful, too bad I wasn't able to find his site...

'Clay and Glazes for the Potter' è stato il mio primo vero libro di ceramica, mi ha affascinato, mi ha aperto a mondi sconosciuti e sopratutto mi ha fatto piangere sulle formule per la creazione degli smalti. E' un testo fondamentale, tutt'ora quando ho dei dubbi vado a consultarlo, di Rhodes mi fido, è stato grazie a lui che ho realizzato il primo smalto con la cenere. Ho pensato che fosse giusto citarlo tra gli indispensabili, è uscita una nuova edizione con ampliamenti di Hopper su nuove tecniche e tendenze. Preferivo la copertina della mia edizione, ma questo libro rimane fondamentale nella biblioteca di ogni ceramista.

'Clay and Glazes for the Potter' was my first ceramic book, the one that opened the doors on this beautiful world of art and technique and made me wanted to cry on clay formulas...It's a good base, and it's rock solid ! Thanks to his book I created my first ash glazes, and even if I didn't learn nearly half of it what I got was good and deep understanding.Yes, when in doubt I go back to it. The new edition was revised and expanded by Robin Hopper in that same spirit, adding new techniques and trends. The cover was nicer on my edition but anyway is definitely worth it !

Sempre parlando di Neo Artigiani inaugura oggi a Londra Origin, fiera annuale dell'artigianato contemporaneo che ospita 220 tra i creatori più innovativi inglesi ed internazionali.
E' interessante lo slogan "Made not Manufactured" per sottolineare che non sitratta di cose solamente fatte a mano ma concepite dall'artista/creatore, anche qui testa e mani.
Molti i ceramisti interessanti, anche se devodire che il trend estetico sembra essere lo stesso, molto minimal, porcellana, forme naturali oppure qualche pezzo più funky, con colori decisi e ammicamenti vari. Comunque di ottima qualità, guardatevi gli espositori

Origin is the Crafts Council's annual showcase of original contemporary craft, bringing together 220 of the most innovative UK and international makers for 1 week. It offers visitors a rare chance to buy directly from the makers and meet them face to face.

Many interesting ceramists, functional or scuptural, but with a similar aesthetic trend. A lot of porcelain, natural shapes, soothing colours or that odd funky bit, with vibrant hues and cheesy details. Anyway all very good ! Have a look at the exhibitors

Un'amica entusiasta di ritorno da Parigi, mi ha ricordato di parlarvi di questa bellissima iniziativa che riguarda la ceramica contemporanea francese. In onore della 44a assemblea generale dell’Accademia Internazionale della Céramique (AIC), Sèvres, Les Arts Décoratifs, la galleria Collection e una quarantina fra gallerie e centri culturali a Parigi propongono esposizioni e retrospettive al fine di rivelare al pubblico la ricchezza della creazione ceramica contemporanea.

Che suono dolce queste parole ! Se potessi partirei immediatamente ma per il momento posso visitare solo virtualmente...

Tracking the new possibilities offered by ceramics in the fine arts, design and craftsmanship, The Contemporary French Ceramic Scene at Les Arts Décoratifs is both an exhibition and an itinerary. Young talents never previously shown in a museum, and established artists sculpting in ceramics for several years have been brought together to illustrate the exhibition’s three themes: “The body and its metaphors”, “An imaginary landscape” and “The object revisited as decoration”. The project takes the form of an itinerary of contemporary ceramic sculptures and installations incorporated into the museum’s permanent collections.
