New International Ceramics
September 24, 2013 to March 2, 2014
Mad Museum NY
About the Exhibition
In recent years, the human figure has returned to center stage in the work of artists around the world. Body & Soul: New International Ceramics underscores
the power of the figure to convey strong emotions, and also to the
accessibility of the ceramic medium. Through clay the figure becomes the
catalyst for addressing the emotional impact of contemporary pressures
that confront our society today. Each work, inspired by a personal
incident or symbolic tale, expresses a deep emotional identity,
contrasting societal, political, and personal views on themes such as
anxiety, bias, mortality and memory. The exhibition will highlight approximately 25 international artists who came to clay as painters, draughtsmen, or sculptors. Many are being shown for the first time in the United States. The range and quality of the works will make this exhibition engaging and provocative, and will bring this special area of creativity into a much-deserved focus.

Exhibition highlights include:
Mounir Fatmi, (Morocco, b. 1970; lives in FR), Forget, 2010, an installation of several ceramic skulls wearing hard hats comments on the fragility of both body and brain, and the hard demands of physical labor and work.
Teresa Gironès, (SP, b. 1941), Victima [Victim] 2012, a poignant representation of a woman unable to speak out against her abuser; the raw treatment of the clay expresses the anger of the incident.
Michel Gouèry, (FR, b. 1959) Riri, Fifi, 2006, a sardonic pair of seated female bodies with no distinguishable facial features: empty vessels without identity, encased in a restrictive armor, and rendered powerless.
Elsa Sahal, (FR, b. 1975) Pieds Noirs/Black Feet, 2010, depicts the memory of bias and hostility by the French people to French immigrants from North Africa.
Kim Simonsson (Finland, b. 1974) Untitled, 2013, andCarrie II, 2009, eerie, dramatic, and forceful depictions of children, contrasting innocence with a sense of impending violence.

It is true, and not only in the States, that there is growing attention to artists working with ceramics, probably driven by the need to satisfy the physical need of a piece of art. Clay is an incredible material that requires knowledge, artistry, a good idea and a spoonful of magic.
These new artists are succeding in infusing a simple bag of greyish dough with pure spirit.
It is very exciting !
Here some good stuff to look at:

CV: Five words that describe your work
AG: Transparency, lightness, fragility, corrosion, transformation
CV: What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practise?
AG: The ability to observe
CV: What is your favourite ceramic piece of all times ?
AG: The first piece that I created when I was 15 yrs old. It is a simple tile with a fish relief, but I regard it as a symbol of the road I chose to travel
CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?
AG: My inspiration comes mostly from the shapes of nature but as also from urban landscape and objects that surround me and their transformation in time

CV: If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?
AN: I chose to live in Sulmona, a village surrounded by the Majella National Park, an enchanting place, an endless source of inspiration! I like to be free to travel and work in different places.
For that reason whenever I can I apply to residencies in different international centres.
I've been in Denmark at Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center and I am going to New Taipei City at Yingge Ceramic Art Museum in february 2014.
I hope in the future to still have the possibility to continue travelling and to know new places and cultures, I believe this is the best way to continue growing in this job
CV: Your best and worst ceramic moment
AG: The best is when after weeks of experimenting new techninques I finally obtain what I had imagined. The worst, every time I do not obtain that wished result, or when I turn on the kiln and half way through I realise that I left out the most important piece.!
