La ceramica che cambia
La scultura ceramica in Italia del secondo dopoguerra.
Da Fontana a Leoncillo, da Melotti a Ontani
Faenza, MIC, 28 giugno 2014 – 1 febbraio 2015
noti).
Neocubismo, informale, pop art, minimalismo, arte concettuale,
contemporanei.

DRINKS RECEPTION
Thursday 5th June 6 - 8 pm
Jessica Carlisle is delighted to announce Malene Hartmann Rasmussen's first exhibition at the gallery, an installation of ceramic sculptures exploring the theme of the enchanted forest.
The wild land beyond the cultivated fields has captured our imagination for centuries. The forest as a place of enchantment is a recurring theme in European literature and myth, and can be traced back to primitive man’s awe and fear of nature which gave rise to ancient cults and pagan rituals. In classical mythology, the satyrs and fauns that dwell in the woods act as symbols of bestiality and abandon, whilst in Norse myth the dark Scandinavian forests of Mirkwood and Iron-Wood are inhabited by elves, trolls, giants and witches, the same creatures that are to be found in 17th & 18th century fairy tales as lore and legend morph into fantasy and fiction. The forest continues to act as an important construct in contemporary culture; a sinister backdrop for countless horror movies and novels, it stands as a metaphor for the realms of the unconscious mind.
Hartmann Rasmussen enters the woods at that most magical time of day; twilight. It is at this bewitching hour, as daylight fades, that crepuscular creatures emerge from their dens and trees start to talk. This moment of transformation is embedded in Hartmann Rasmussen’s sculptures themselves, the once soft clay now hardened into fragile ceramic. Yet these strange creations feel like they might yet become animate. The owl perched on his shelf might at any moment fly away, the stocky rabbit might bound off, and the fronds of wooden hearts be seen to curl and grow. It is these boundaries between living and non-living, animal and human, plant and creature, fact and fiction, and how they have been interpreted and understood over time, that hold such a particular fascination for the artist, and her unique way of exploring and depicting them gives these surreal installations their distinctive uncanny air.

‘Born
in Brazil, 1962. I initially graduated with a degree in Architecture in
1985 helping me cement my interest in the fusion between urban
landscapes and natural forms. I was introduced to clay a year later and
became fascinated by its multiple possibilities for expression and the
development of ideas.
My
inspiration is drawn mostly from the natural world and porcelain has
the smoothness and the malleability that I need to create new shapes,
manipulating it to appear in some cases defiantly weightless. My work is
about repetitive sequencing with separate elements to form a cohesive
sculptural group. I am principally interested in large-scale wall

New International Ceramics
September 24, 2013 to March 2, 2014
Mad Museum NY
About the Exhibition
In recent years, the human figure has returned to center stage in the work of artists around the world. Body & Soul: New International Ceramics underscores
the power of the figure to convey strong emotions, and also to the
accessibility of the ceramic medium. Through clay the figure becomes the
catalyst for addressing the emotional impact of contemporary pressures
that confront our society today. Each work, inspired by a personal
incident or symbolic tale, expresses a deep emotional identity,
contrasting societal, political, and personal views on themes such as
anxiety, bias, mortality and memory. The exhibition will highlight approximately 25 international artists who came to clay as painters, draughtsmen, or sculptors. Many are being shown for the first time in the United States. The range and quality of the works will make this exhibition engaging and provocative, and will bring this special area of creativity into a much-deserved focus.

Exhibition highlights include:
Mounir Fatmi, (Morocco, b. 1970; lives in FR), Forget, 2010, an installation of several ceramic skulls wearing hard hats comments on the fragility of both body and brain, and the hard demands of physical labor and work.
Teresa Gironès, (SP, b. 1941), Victima [Victim] 2012, a poignant representation of a woman unable to speak out against her abuser; the raw treatment of the clay expresses the anger of the incident.
Michel Gouèry, (FR, b. 1959) Riri, Fifi, 2006, a sardonic pair of seated female bodies with no distinguishable facial features: empty vessels without identity, encased in a restrictive armor, and rendered powerless.
Elsa Sahal, (FR, b. 1975) Pieds Noirs/Black Feet, 2010, depicts the memory of bias and hostility by the French people to French immigrants from North Africa.
Kim Simonsson (Finland, b. 1974) Untitled, 2013, andCarrie II, 2009, eerie, dramatic, and forceful depictions of children, contrasting innocence with a sense of impending violence.

It is true, and not only in the States, that there is growing attention to artists working with ceramics, probably driven by the need to satisfy the physical need of a piece of art. Clay is an incredible material that requires knowledge, artistry, a good idea and a spoonful of magic.
These new artists are succeding in infusing a simple bag of greyish dough with pure spirit.
It is very exciting !
