Susan Peterson
E' da qualche tempo che non parlo di libri, purtroppo fuori da internet è difficile venire a contatto con nuove pubblicazioni e si finisce a rileggere quello che si ha sottomano.
Il libro di Susan Peterson "Fare Ceramica" è uno di quei testi importanti sopratutto perchè si trova in Italiano e apre a tecniche sperimentali si nella creazione di smalti ed engobi che nella fase di cottura. Grazie a lei ho avuto il coraggio di spingere il mio forno, e malgrado qualche piccolo incidente, diminuire sensibilmente le ore di cottura. La Peterson dice che con il forno a fiamma rovesciata da lei progettato cuoceva ad alta temperatura in 4 ore e mezza! Aldilà della progettazione del proprio forno, pratica che non è sicuramente per tutti, il libro dedica molto spazio ai test e da' utili informazioni su tecniche diverse, fornendo delle valide ricette.
Purtroppo questo è l'unico testo dell'autrice disponibile in Italiano ma vi consiglio anche "The Craft and Art Clay" testo di qualche anno precedente al "Fare Ceramica" e il libro, sempre dell'autrice "Shoji Hamada: A Potter's Way & Work". La Peterson era anche un'esperta della ceramica i Nativi Americani, di cui ha curato mostre e ha scritto diversi libri.

Susan Peterson was a great source of inspiration in my earlier days, her practicality and strive for experimentation led me, not without some small accident, to radically reduce the firing circle of my kiln. Susan Peterson had a family and understood that time was a major problem for many of us. I felt, for once understood. Ceramics is a great practice but very time consuming !
Her books are rich but written in no fuss-style, and I keep on going back to them. You can peek inside "The Craft and Art of Clay" and have an idea of the wide range of technique and artists covered by this wonderful book. I recommend also the other books by the author, like "Working with Clay" and "Shoji Hamada: A Potter's Way and Work" (even if I prefer the one written by Bernard Leach !). Susan Peterson was also an expert on Native Americans and Pueblo pottery.

la nuova creatività nata dai forni tradizionali

La mostra a cura della Japan Foundation, che prevede l’esposizione di 71 opere, si prefigge l’obbiettivo di offrire uno sguardo d’insieme sul mondo della ceramica giapponese contemporanea e in particolare degli “utsuwa” (contenitori), realizzati nelle aree tipiche per la produzione della ceramica tradizionale, Arita, Karatsu, Hagi, Bizen, Kyoto, Kutani, Seto, Mino e Mashiko, che si distinguono tra l’altro per i caratteristici forni. Proprio in queste zone sono attivi giovani ceramisti contemporanei, i quali, se da una parte si fanno portavoce della tradizione utilizzando la tecnica di cottura della ceramica nei forni tradizionali, dall’altra cercano di dar nuova forma creativa e innovativa alle loro realizzazioni.

A Roma una mostra sulla ceramica indigena d'autore

"Terracolta. La ceramica romana e laziale". La mostra è presentata da Giorgio Bizzarri e Lorenzo Zichichi e a curata da Norberto G. Kuri.
In questa occasione Il Cigno GG Edizioni, propone al pubblico un inedito volume di duecento pagine circa, dove Norberto G. Kuri evidenzia con un’accurata selezione, il ruolo preponderante di Roma e del Lazio nella produzione della ceramica artistica.
Il Catalogo suddiviso in tre parti, presenta nella prima sezione le creazioni di ceramica dall’Antichità al Settecento; nella seconda la produzione artistica dell’Ottocento e Novecento e nella terza il lavoro di artisti contemporanei venuti specificamente a lavorare a Roma e nella regione del Lazio. Il percorso espositivo, grazie a un accurato allestimento scenografico e didattico, segue la cronologia del catalogo e condurrà il visitatore ad ammirare le opere di alcuni degli artisti contemporanei dei quali si parla nella terza parte del volume, quali Emilio Greco, Umberto Mastroianni, Nedda Guidi, Nino Caruso, Riccardo Monachesi, Franco Ciuti, e altri esponenti.

The rising generation from traditional Japanese kilns

The exhibition introduces the works of a total 35 artists active in seven major traditional kiln sites in Japan. They differ in orientation, including some who carry on long traditions of pottery production while pursuing ever-richer standards in their craft and others who seek to create individualistic works exploring new forms. All are promising artist who will be leaders of the nex generation in the ceramic art in Japan.

The theme of the exibition is the "vessel", trying to focus on the present and the future,of Japanese Pottery.

Una buffa storia

I Bucaros sono la versione sudamericana del nostro bucchero, contenitori di creta cotti a bassa temperatura e resi impermeabile mediante la steccatura. Il bucchero è solitamente nero di aspetto, cotto in atmosfera riducente, mentre questi vasi sono del classico color arancio. Nella collezione del V&A ce ne sono alcuni molto belli provenienti dalla regione intorno a Tonalá in Messico. I Bucaros erano di gran moda presso la corte spagnola che li usava come contenitori per l'acqua, essendo porosi i Bucaros conferivano all'acqua un sapore particolarmente apprezzato. Per aromatizzare ultreiormente l'acqua, i vasi venivano conservati vicino ad olii e spezie. Inoltre pare che le gran dame usassero mangiare dei piccoli pezzi di ceramica per mantenere la pelle bianca, per regolare le mestruazioni, come un anticoncezionale e come allucinogeno!
I buscaros servivano anche ad umidificare l'aria nelle torride e

stati spagnole.

A Funny Story

Browsing through the V&A Ceramic Collection I found this interesting story about the Spanish court.
Bucaros were highly-polished earthenware vessels from Tonalá were not only admired by the colonial settlers but exported to Europe in quantities from the early 17th century. The fashion for búcaros de Indias (aromatic earthenware from Latin America) is well recorded in accounts and Spanish still-life paintings of the period.
The vessels were celebrated for their fine and fragrant clay body, which infused a delicate flavour to the water contained within them. Fashionable Spanish ladies were known to eat small fragments of the búcaros to benefit from certain gastronomic qualities (the qualities were of various types: they clarified the skin, helped with bleeding during periods and had hallucinogenic properties!). The aroma could be enhanced by storing the absorbent clay vessels in boxes scented with spices and oils. They were also thought to purify polluted water and even detect poisoned liquids....those were great times for the humble clay !

Il New York Times dedica spazio alla ceramica. L'occasione è la mostra di Beth Katleman alla Greenwich House Pottery, ve ne avevo parlato è una meravigliosa scuola e spazio espositivo nel cuore del Greenwhich village a N.Y.. L'intervista alla Katleman è disponibile on-line, la foto di lei così 'normale' davanti al nuovo lavoro Folly rende la sua installazione ancora più intrigante. La carta da parati ha ispirato molti artisti in quanto rappresenta uno stereotipo tipico, forse più nei paesi anglosassoni che da noi, dove muri fatti in cartongesso venivano ricoperti da una carta carina per dare l'impressione di una casa 'come si deve'. I valori borghesi non vivono un buon momento, e ormai vengono presi di mira anche da delle gentili madri di famiglia ! Dalla sua carta da parati emergono bambolini e oggettini kitsch, calchi di vecchi giochi relizzati in porcellana. Il risultato ha qualcosa di sgradevole, la tranquillità lascia il posto al dubbio, ma è sicuramente interessante.

The New York Times talks to ceramist Beth Katleman,the occasion is the opening of her new exhibition at Greenwich House Pottery, the lovely pottery school and exhibition space in the centre of the Greenwich Village in N.Y. (read it here). Her work challenges the stereotypical values of being nice and proper, by creating a three-dimensional wallpaper inhabited by peeing toddlers surrounded by kitsch little elements, all against a beautiful jasper blue background.
The photo of the artist against the installation is even more interesting, Katleman herself looks so 'normal' and proper that makes the work even more interesting. I always get strange feelings when I see casted figurines, they seem to hide terrible secrets and this time is no different ...
but the work is good !

Thanks to my new interest in contemporary jewellery I discovered a beautiful magazine Art Aurea . Written in both german and english, the magazine comes out four times a year, and is dedicated not only (but mainly) to jewellery but also to the world of applied arts. On the cover of the winter edition stands the wonderful work of ceramist Ann van Hoey.

La mostra che il Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza dedica a uno dei protagonisti della scena artistica contemporanea è la prima dell'artista dedicata esclusivamente alle sue opere in ceramica.

Enzo Cucchi è uno degli artisti italiani più riconosciuti a livello internazionale. Il suo lavoro si caratterizza, all'interno di un fenomeno italiano destinato a sovvertire le tendenze dominanti di ambito concettuale come la Transavanguardia, per un forte espressionismo espressivo spesso calato sui soggetti, sui paesaggi e sui temi della sua terra d'origine (le Marche).

Enzo Cucchi is one of the Italian artists who mainly obtains international honour. His creations, developed inside the Trans-vanguard movement, are characterized by a deep expressive expressionism, often devoted to subjects and landscapes of his country of origin (Marche region).

Still on at MIC is the work of austrian ceramist Thomas Bohle, definitely worth the visit !

Access Ceramics

Ho da poco scoperto il progetto di access Ceramics e l'ho trovato interessante. access Ceramics è una collezione di immagini di opere in ceramica realizzate da artisti contemporanei. Le opere vengono scelte da una commissione di cui fanno parte diversi docenti di college americani, curatori di musei, membri della Archie Bray Foudation e la ceramista Arumy Horie. Le immagini vengono catalogate e sono disponibili sul sito e attraverso Flickr. Questo progetto cerca di colmare un vuoto evidente, quello delle collezioni di immagini di ceramica contemporanea disponibili in rete. Gli artisti per il momento sono poco più di 200 ma si accettano candidature !

It is designed for use by artists, arts educators, scholars and the general public, and is intended to fill a void in contemporary ceramics digital image collections on the web. The images are stored within the Flickr photo sharings system, and are accessible through this website as well as the Flickr interface. Submissions are juried by a curatorial boardwhich consists of Ted Vogel, Associate Professor of Art, Studio Head in Ceramics, Department of Art, at Lewis & Clark College, Namita Wiggers, Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, Oregon, Thomas Orr, Professor of Art and head of Ceramics at the Oregon College of Art and Craft, Richard Burkett, Professor of Ceramics at San Diego State University, and Ayumi Horie, a studio potter and member of the board of directors of the Archie Bray Foundation.
The project is very interesting and the image collection is growing daily. They are open for submission !
