The work of Philip Eglin is truly fascinating, his figurines come from ancient times but speak a very modern language. The Virgins with Child, the Jesus and the Crucifictions propose religion as a modern mythology. The fragile porcelain statues seem to faint showing us their shalloness.

CV: What is your favourite ceramic piece ever? KH: Tricky picking just one but I’ve always coveted the Tang horses in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s collection.

CV: Where do you get your inspiration from? KH: Inspiration for my work comes from the world around me. I’m currently living in the Yorkshire Dales, forms and colour from the landscape here are slowly seeping into my pieces.

CV: If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go? KH: Japan. To experience the ceramic culture/skills and amazing landscapes.

Chi ama la ceramica conosce bene le meraviglie degli artisti giapponesi, maestri di naturalezza e perfezione. I maestri erano spesso uomini e alle donne era relegato il ruolo di aiutanti. Troppo duro il lavoro di preparazione dell'impasto e troppo impegnativa la costruzione di grandi vasi. Inoltre non potevano lavorare al tornio o avvicinarsi ai forni, per paura che scoprissero le particolari tecniche di famiglia e le diffondessero dopo il matrimonio ad un altro clan.
Nel dopoguerra un gruppo di donne pioniere cominciò a creare pezzi influenzati dalle tecniche tradizionali e dalla natura. Ormai la secoda generazione di ceramiste giapponesi ha conquistato la sua posizione e può permettersi più liberamente di esprimere la sua voce.
A queste due generazioni di artiste è dedicata la mostra: Soaring Voices: Contemporary Japanese Women Ceramic Artists fino a metà Ottobre al Crocker Art Museum di Sacramento.

Ceramics lovers know all to well the magic of Japanese artists, masters of perfection and simplicity. They were all men, the women were supposed to help in the background. Too much physical strength was required to prepare the clay and women were not trusted. The families were also scared of losing their technical secrets to an other clan by marriage, so the daughters were kept well off the kilns. After the war a group of pioneers started creating work that was both traditional and poetic. Now, second generation, Japanese women artist have gained the power to let their voices be heard. To these two generations of incredible women is dedicated the exhibition: Soaring Voices: Contemporary Japanese Women Ceramic Artists until mid October at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.

Come al solito la Galerie Besson non delude, e per il mese di Settembre ha organizzato una mostra molto interessante. I quattro artisti che ci presenta vengono dalla Finlandia, precisamente da Helsinki, e nei loro lavori ci parlano di quella terra così particolare.
Le opere, di dimensioni diverse, sono tutte caratterizzate da una forte semplicità quasi primitiva nell'uso dei materiali e delle tecniche. La mostra è visitabile on-line sul sito della galleria.

As usual Galerie Besson is of inspiration. The exhibition scheduled for the month of September takes us up to the land of Finland. Four artists, all living and working around Helsinki, open us a window on the best of contemporary Finnish ceramics. The strong simplicity of the work, and the use of the various techniques, speak of the artist's strong sense of nature and of Finland peculiar atmosphere. The exhibition is fully illustrated on-line. Performing Clay

Miquel Barceló and Josef Nadj, le infinite possibilità della creta

Questa performance creata per il prestigioso Festival di Avignone, vede due artisti alle prese con un muro di argilla rossa. Miquel Barcelò, pittore che da anni lavora con la ceramica, e Josef Nadj, ballerino e coreografo. I due si scontrano con la terra cruda creando situazioni drammatiche e divertenti, plasmando la materia e creando continuamente situazioni diverse. Barcelò, artista che rappresenta la Spagna a questa edizione della Biennale di Venezia, ha iniziato a usare la ceramica nei mesi passati in Dogon dove il calore e il vento rendevano la pittura impossibile, e ne ha scoperto la forza primitiva e moderna. Le opere presentate mantengono la loro caratteristica di forza primordiale.

Miquel Barceló and Josef Nadj, the endless possibilities of clay

This performance created for the prestigious Avignone Festival, shows two artists facing a wall of red clay. Miquel Barcelò, a painter that has been working with clay for several years, and Josef Nadj, a famous dancer and choreographer. The two work with the clay creating situations that go from dramatic to ridiculous, shaping the material in a constant changing scenario. Barcelò represents Spain at this year Venice Biennale, he started using clay during his stay in Dogon Mali, because the heat and the wind made painting impossible, and then discovered the strength and modernity of the oldest art material on earth. The works presented at the Biennale maintain their primitive power.

Sempre a Londra dal 18 Settembre aprirà la nuova sezione del Victoria and Albert Museum dedicata alla ceramica, con una esposizione di più di 3.300 pezzi.

Welcome Back! Revitalized by the holidays we are ready for an interesting and intense start. On the 11th in Certaldo, Firenze opens Concreta, ceramic exhibitions with some pieces of the interesting Martha Pachon. In London the gallery Contemporary Ceramics, presents a selection of new works from artists such as Valeria Nascimento and Susan Nemeth. Visit the gallery's blog for images and info. Also in London on the 18th at the Victoria and Albert Museum will open the new galleries dedicated to ceramic art, showcasing more than 3,300 pieces.

Mel Robson è una ceramista australiana, la sua produzione è vasta e diversissima. Dalle impalpabili pareti di contenitori-sculture alle più funzionali ciotole, il suo lavoro rimane decisamente poetico. Quasi tutti i pezzi sono decorati con decalcomanie, che Mel, patita dei "patterns" (i.e. motivi di carte stradali, cartamodelli, successioni di parole...), applica pazientemente. Mel Robson is an Australian ceramist, who creates a wide range of beautiful work. From the wafer thin densely decorated non-functional vessels to the everyday poetic pitchers and bowls. CV: Five words that describe your work

MR: I mostly work with porcelain. Its just so clean and white and light and versatile and evocative and classic and contemporary all at the same time - and that is probably how I would also describe my work!
Lavoro principalmente con la porcellana. E' così pura, bianca, leggera, versatile, evocativa, classica e contemporanea allo stesso tempo, ed è così che descriverei il mio lavoro.

CV: What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practice?

MR: Patience. I am actually not a very patient person at all but when it comes to making my work i strangely seem to have all the patience in the world...except when it comes to firing and opening kilns....
La pazienza. A dire il vero, non sono una persona particolarmente paziente, ma nel mio lavoro stranamente sembro avere tutta la pazienza del mondo...tranne durante le cotture o quando l'apertura del forno...

CV: What is your favorite ceramic piece ever?

MR: I'm not sure I could choose just one, but I would
probably have to say anything by Gwynn Hansen Piggott (on the left, Still Life).

CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?

MR: This is always a very hard question to answer as inspiration comes from so many things and gets distilled and diluted and whirled around in the big mass of imagery and experience we are subjected to everyday. A lot of my work draws on my own family history so that is a big inspiration. I also spend a lot of time in libraries looking through old records and archives. Lots of ideas come from that.
Questa è una domanda difficile a cui rispondere dato che l'ispirazione viene da così tante cose, e viene distillata e diluita e attorcigliata ad una massa di immagini ed esperienze a cui siamo esposti ogni giorno. Molta parte del mio lavoro attinge alla mia storia familiare, è una grande fonte di ispirazione. inoltre passo molto tempo nelle bibliooteche, cercando nei registri e negli archivi. Molte idee vengono da lì.

CV: If you could chose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?

MR: aaah...I could never choose just one place! I'd like to have 6 studios on six different continents and spend my time wandering from one to the other! Is that too much to ask??!! Non potrei mai scegliere un posto solo! Mi piacerebbe avere 6 studio in ciascuno dei 6 continenti e passare il mio tempo andando da un all'altro! Chiedo troppo??!!

Savvas Christodoulides alla Biennale di Atene

Estate e voglia di Grecia, che a parte le bellezze naturali sta sviluppando un'interessantissimo panorama artistico. Heaven la seconda edizione della Biennale di Atene andrà avanti fino all'inizio

Avevamo già parlato di un libro abbastanza particolare per il mondo della ceramica, "Searching for Beauty, lettere di un collezionista ad una ceramista". Uscito diversi anni fa aveva, per la prima volta, rivelato il punto di vista di un appasionato collezionista in una serie di lettere alla ceramista Christa Assad. Ora il suo autore Richard Jacobs è entrato nel mondo del blog continuando a tenere acceso l'interesse per temi a noi così imporatanti. Vi traduco una frase del libro sempre sull'argomento successo. "E' il talento innato il vero determinatore del successo, o come molte altre imprese umane, la confezione, il marketing, le giuste conoscenze e assecondare i gusti del pubblico possono determinare il successo? Misuri il successo dalla qualità del pezzo sul ripiano o dalla quantità dei soldi in banca? Puoi veramente avere tutti e due..?"

Several posts ago we spoke about an unusual book on the ceramic shelf, "Searching for Beauty" that came out a couple of years ago. This book is a collection of letter sent by Richard Jacobs, a ceramic lover and collector, to ceramist Christa Assad. In the book the original point of view of Jacobs raises many very good questions. Da Deezen celebre blog di design questi vasi sono rimbalzati in lungo e in largo all'interno della rete.
"The Age of the World" sono dei vasi-urne creati dal designer francese super-cool Mathieu Lehanneur. Ogni vaso rappresenta un paese e l'età della sua popolazione, sono creati da 100 strati ad indicare gli anni della vita dalla nascita (il più basso) alla morte (la punta).
per dirla con le parole dell'autore:

"Quello che abbiamo qui è un affascinante visuale da ecoscandaglio dello stato della vita, uno sguardo alla nostra aspettativa di vita da un punto di vista scultoreo"(M.L.)

Le dimensioni sono di 60x60 e sono realizzati in ceramica smaltata da Claude Aiello a Vallarius.

From the great design blog Deezen, this vases have been all over the web. "The Age of the World" is a creation of the super cool french designer Mathieu Lehanneur. Each urn represent a country and the age of its population. They are built up of 100 layers, each representing a year of life with birth at the bottom and death at the top. The dimensions are 60x60 of enamelled ceramic made made at Vallauris by Claude Aiello. In the word of the author:

"What we have here is a fascinating twin-scope view of the state of living, a look at our own life-span in a sculptural surround view" (M. L.)

Queste sono le parole di Margaret O'Rorke, ceramista che da anni si dedica alla magia della porcellana. Le sue forme, spesso forgiate al tornio, diventano incandescenti essenze che crescono dai muri o pendono dal soffitto. Il risultato lascia senza parole...

"The translucency of fine high-fired porcelain has led me...to throw forms which give light.These ideas stem from the nature of the material, forms that can grow from the potter's wheel, the process of firing and a sense of adventure with light and space."

These are the words of Margaret O'Rorke, ceramic artist devoted to the magic of porcelain.
Her creations, often born on the wheel, become white-hot essences that grow from walls or float from the ceiling. The results leave no space for words...

Un Appasionato Collezionista
Il couturier Anthony Shaw ha collezionato per oltre trent'anni opere di ceramisti Inglesi, sopratutto quel genere di lavoro che in Inglese viene definito "Studio Pottery". Con questo termine si intendono le piccole produzioni di artisti, da soli o in piccoli gruppi, con caratteristiche di unicità e seguiti interamente nella produzione dall'artista/i . Nella casa novecentesca di Billing Place a Londra, possiamo ammirare i lavori di Lucie Rie e Hans Coper, Ian Godfrey, Jim Malone e numerosi altri. Mi piace l'idea di poter ammirare l'arte in un'ambiente che sia completamente diverso da quello asettico di una galleria, sopratutto quando riguarda una collezione privata, nelle stanze si respira viva l'emozione che queste opere hanno generato e ancora generano. In questo periodo John Christian, storico dell'arte e consulente freelance della famosa casa d'aste Christie's, rende omaggio al collezionismo più puro curando una piccola mostra di pezzi scelti al n.11 di Billing Place.

A Collection of Love
The couturier Anthony Shaw has been collecting for over 30 years wonderful ceramic pieces especially among the production of the British Studio Pottery. This term represent a way of working, artists alone or in small groups creating a unique production of few pieces followed during the entire process by the artist/s. In the lovely 19th Century house on Billing Place in London, we can admire work from Lucie Rie and Hans Coper, Ian Godfrey, Jim Malone and many others. I love the idea of being able to view an exhibitions, especially a collection, outside the white gallery wall, in the rooms you can still breath the emotions that the pieces have created and still create. At the moment, John Christian, art historian and auction house Christie's consultant, is paying a tribute to the purest form of collecting, the one only guided by the heart. He created a little exhibition in the room at 11 Billing Place.
