"Weaving Teapot" Junya Shao

Junya Shao is a ceramic artist working in the Yixing teapot tradition. Her work reflects a strong foundation in the traditional methods of exquisite craftsmanship with careful attention to detail and design.

On September 17-18, Junya Shao will instruct a two-day Workshop at Plinth Gallery, exploring the tradition of Chinese Yixing Pottery. Cost for this workshop is $225 which includes lunch and some materials. Space is limited and advance registration and payment guarantees a space. La culture artistique de la République Tchèque se dévoile un peu cet été à tra­vers les oeuvres de 8 artistes céramistes de talent.
Presque tous ont étudié à la ré­putée Académie des Arts Appliqués de Prague,
ils exposent en Asie, en Europe, en Amérique et sont membres de l'AIC.

Iva OUHRABKOVÁ,
propose une oeuvre minimaliste de terre et de verre.

Petr HŮZA,
qualifié de poète de la céramique a obtenu le prix du design en 2006.

Šárka RADOVA,
fille du célèbre céramiste tchèque Pravoslav Rada.

Jindra VIKOVÁ,
grand prix de la porcelaine à Nyons en Suisse, Médaille d'Or à Vallauris...

Pavel KNAPEK,
réputé pour ses surprenants reliefs façon papier froissé.

Helena SAMOHELOVÁ
a beaucoup travaillé pour l'architecture de son pays.

London part two

Continuando nei miei giri inglesi, sono stata folgorata da una stanza del British Mueum, era un po' che non ci mettevo piede e non me la ricordavo così straordinaria ! La stanza numero 95, la Sir Percival David Collection. Una galleria di 1.700 pezzi tra le migliori ceramiche cinesi dal 3° al 20° secolo. Vedere insieme così tanti oezzi straordinari è un'esperienza incredibile, ce ne sono per tutti i gusti : Song, Ming, Ding, Ru, Jun...e chi più ne ha
C'è un libro in vendita dul sito del British Museum che vi da la possibilità di sbirciare nella collezione: Chinese Ceramics

Passando dal sacro al profano...alla Saatchi Gallery è in corso una mostra dal titolo "Shapes of Things to Come" (qualcosa tipo ...la forma delle cose future) con alcune opere discutibili e altre efficaci, ma con una presenza ceramica (anche se cruda!) di opere di Rebecca Warren, artista contemporanea che usa la ceramica. La conoscevo già e le sue sculture non mi dispiacciono affatto !

Altro giro ...ed eccomi al super favoloso Royal College of Art per lo show di fine anno. La mostra è finita ma potete guardare gli artisti dal sito della scuola. Lì tra i tanti studenti tutti bravi ho trovato un mio antico amore Emmanuel Boos. Boos aveva completato un PhD in ceramica, una vera meraviglia i suoi smalti !! Vale la pena guardare anche gli altri studenti (anche se io avevo occhi solo per lui !) RCA 2011 ceramics and glass

...dulcis in fundo, proprio la mattina prima di prendere l'aereo sono riuscita a scapicollarmi al V&A per fare quattro chiacchere con Clare Twomney, che aveva da poco cominciato una residenza al museo. Non posso dirvi che opportunità incredibile offrono le residenze sia per gli artisti che per il "pubblico". Purtroppo mentre ero lì è arrivato un mobile dalla Cina (una richiesta dell'artista per una nuova installazione) pieno di ceramiche rotte !!! Poverina !
Ma questo vi da un'idea di che possibilità hanno a disposizione i ceramisti inglesi, tra l'altro la Twomney è una ceramista concettuale, anche se ha alle spalle un training classico, i pezzi vengono quasi sempre eseguiti su commissione. Mi piace motissimo il suo lavoro e anche lei !

Time for part two... I have to make ammend because I forgot about the incredible wonders of the British Museum Room 95 is my Alì Babà's cave. The Sir Percival David Collection is just amazing ! Within this gallery of almost 1,700 objects are examples of the finest Chinese ceramics in the world, dating from the 3rd to the 20th century. Some are unique creations, while others were mass-produced in batches of several hundred at a time. Technological innovations and the use of regional raw materials mean that Chinese ceramics are visually diverse. Have a peak at the catalogue: Chinese Ceramics

from sacred to profane...time to have a look at the "Shapes of Things to Come" at the Saatchi Gallery. With a room dedicated to artist Rebecca Warren,there is apparently space for ceramic sculptures ( even if unfired) in the future! not bad

had to stop at the Royal college of Art for degree Show, very talented artists, but was completly taken when I saw the work of my old sweetheart (not litterally !) Emmanuel Boos. His work is so beautiful !!! Boos was finishing hi PhD at RCA. Through their site you can see what was there: RCA 2011 ceramics and glass last but not least...before jumping on the plane










I had the great chance to talk to artist Clare Twomney at the V&A, where she is artist in residency until Novembre. I love her work and it was incredibly inspiring listening to her ideas on a future project. I would call her a conceptual ceramist in the sense that she rarely touches the clay, but her installation are deeply touching and her concern so close to those of a more traditional style. that's it I am afraid ! Take your time to follow the links they are truly valuable and enjoy ..in the mean time I will be on holiday ;)

Biennale Padiglione Italia

Prima di parlarvi ancora delle scoperte inglesi volevo dire, che mentre ero via, si è inaugurata la discussa 54a edizione della Biennale di Venezia. Purtroppo non so se quest'anno riuscirò ad andare, visto l'imminente trasloco verso la Spagna, ma mi rallegro della numerosa presenza di amici ceramisti a questa manifestazione. L'organizzazione complicata e il mio problema di "deficit di attenzione" ha concorso a creare una percezione quantomeno fumosa di questo evento.

Purtroppo non posso darvi tutte le informazioni del caso, ma mi sembra che ci siano diverse sedi oltre Venezia che ospitano le opere, creando l'occasione per visite estemporanee. The 54th edition of the Biennale di Venezia has started when I was already off on a relocation plan...Moving to Madrid in short notice has kept me very busy and made me lost track of what was happening in Italy. Lots of great ceramist this year are participating to the event also through the regional pavilions around Italy. Keep your eyes open !

Londra era bella come sempre e ancora una volta mi sorprende quanta energia e pace ci sia in una città così affolata. Questa visita mi ha riportato a visitare vecchie conoscenze e mi dato la possibilità di creare nuovi interessantissimi contatti. Avrei seguito tutti i corsi, tutti i seminari, visto tutte le mostre, gli show di fine anno addirittura e i mercatini, ma anche lì il tempo non basta mai e i miei impazienti accompagnatori (ancora minorenni) cominciavano ad avere l'allergia alla ceramica. Prima visita indispensabile è stata alla galleria Contemporary Ceramics nella sua nuova sede davanti al British Museum. Una meravigliosa collezione di artisti tra cui le sculture di Susan O'Byrne, volpi, tassi e uccellini che sembrano usciti da un libro di fiabe e che dal vivo sono veramente bellissime !
La Galleria ospita in questi giorni una mostra della ceramista e maestra in calligrafia Mary White, opere innovative e misteriose. La White è autrice di un libro che approfondisce l'uso dell'alfabeto su superfici in ceramica.

My visit to London was pleasurable and rewarding as usual, so much energy and peace in such a populated place ! I made some interesting discoveries, made new connections, and went back to admire the beauty of some great collections. The first trip was to Contemporary Ceramics, the gallery specialized in ceramics now in their new location in front at the British Museum. The gallery has an incredible showcase of artists producing a great variety of work, all of it of the best quality. An amazing surprise was the experience of Susan O'Byrne's sculptures. Foxes, badgers, little birds seemed just jump out from a children fairytale into the gallery space. Great !!
The exhibition space of the gallery was dedicated to the work of ceramist and calligrapher Mary White, also know author of "Lettering on Ceramics". Innovative and mysterious pieces.

Nello spazio galleria di Ann Linnemann le ceramiche di Elisa Helland-Hansen si interrogano su peso, massa e dimensioni. Chi lavora al tornio conosce la crucialità dei grammi nella creazione in serie, si parte da palle uguali di peso ben disposte una accanto all'altra. Il peso di un oggetto è una parte fondamentale della sua essenza, qui Elisa parla della mostra.

"Nella mia cucina vivono 44 tazze e vasetti diversi. Non sono stati scelti a caso. E neanche il peso, la dimensione, il volume, la forma, la superficie sono casuali.Dopo tanti anni di utilizzo, ho notato come il peso di una tazza ha il suo proprio valore e importanza nell'esperienza sensoriale del bere. In una giornata oppressiva, il tè bevuto da una tazza pesante aiuta a dare tranquillità. Il caffè gustato in una tazzina leggera può aiutare quando ci si sente fragili. O posso posso prendere in mano una tazza che mi fa' arrabbiare...il peso sbagliato per il mio bisogno.
Questo interesse per il peso delle tazze è diventato una ricerca sui limiti di una tazza con una massa determinata. Che possibilità ha una palla di argilla di 222 grammi ? Quante diverse forme posso realizzare dato un medesimo peso ?

Il mio punto di partenza erano 9 cilindri con identico profilo e dimensione, ma con un peso crescente da 111 a 999 grammi. Dalla valutazione di questa produzione di tazze è nata una nuova serie, dove la relazione tra peso, volume e ripartizione della massa riceve un'attenzione particolare. Ancora di più la scelta dello smalto, del colore e del motivo sono stati influenzati dalle caratteristiche di una specifica tazza"

Weight is crucial in the creation of a ceramic piece, is the definement of its character. Any potter that has spent some time on the wheel knows the importance of calculating the right weight of a starting lump of clay. Elisa Helland-Hansen in this exhibition at Ann Linnemann studio gallery, shows the results of her investigation on weight, mass and volume, here from her words:

“In my kitchen live 44 different cups and beakers. They are not randomly chosen. And neither their weight, size, volume, form, surface and expression are random.

Through many years of use, I have noticed how the weight of a cup has its own value and gets importance in the sensuous experience of drinking. An oppressive day, the tea drunk from a heavy beaker may give peace in mind. Coffee in a feather light cup may comfort a fragile condition. Or I can hold a cup, that really irritates... wrong weight for the need of the moment.
This interest in the weight of the cup has resulted in a research of the limits of the cup at a given mass. What possibilities lie in a lump of clay at 222 grams? How many varied expressions can I get from the same weight?

My starting point became a series of 9 beakers with identical profile and size, but with a rise of weight from 111 grams to 999 grams.
Through the evaluation of this row of cups grew new series, where the relationship between weight volume and apportion of mass got a special attention. Further on my choice of glaze, colour and pattern became influenced by the character of the specific cup.”

La Cornovaglia offre molto agli amanti della ceramica, diventata mito grazie a Bernard Leach e alla presenza sotto il suolo della Cornwall Stone, una roccia felspatica che rende bellissimi gli smalti. St. Ives dagli anni '20 è il luogo degli artisti, famosi scultori e ceramisti hanno abitato le sue splendide coste con spiagge bianche che sembrano ( se non fate caso alla temperatura) caraibiche. Tante gallerie e addiritura un distaccamento della mitica Tate Gallery testimoniano la presenza di una forte comunità di artisti St.Ives e la vivacità della sua vita culturale.

St. Ives

La New Craftsman Gallery è la più vecchia galleria di St Ives, nasce nel 1948 per volontà di Janet Leach, moglie di Bernard e ceramista anche lei. Negli anni ha ospitato importanti pittori (come Patrick Henron), scultori e membri della Studio Pottery, ma anche artigiani locali.
In questo periodo la galleria espone le bellissime ceramiche di Akiko Hirai, le avevo già incontrate tra gli espositori di Origin, ma trovo che la qualità dei suoi pezzi sia migliorata. Mi piacciono moltissimo, sembrano dei sofisticati reperti, ceramiche dal sapore etereo.

Cornwall is a wonderful place, with white sandy beaches and breathtaking views. Cornwall is especially wonderful for ceramist thanks to cornwall stone (or cornish stone, a feldspar used in clay and glazes) and to Bernard Leach who set up his pottery in the lovely St.Ives. St.Ives is rich of natural beauty and of cultural life, this little village has been since the '20 the place where many famous artists took their residency. The spirit of St.Ives is still alive with plenty of great gallery and a special museum, Tate St. Ives. The oldest gallery in St.Ives New Craftsman Gallery, was created in 1960 by Janet Leach, wife of Bernard and an acclaimed ceramist herself. The gallery has hosted many great artists from painters and sculptors to members of the studio pottery and talented craft makers. Until the 16th of July, the gallery is inhabited by the mysterious presence of Akiko Hirai's ceramics. I discovered her work through Origin, and I am deeply taken by her new pieces. Enchanting !

Quella della Cunningham è una natura opulenta e matrigna nei colori forti e nelle forme quasi inquietanti. Protuberanze, corni ed escrescenze smaltate arrichiscono le forme di connotazioni più aliene che umane, in un armonia di colori usati sapientemente.


Now in its sixth year, Vessels Gallery — located in Boston’s South End, the center of the city’s thriving arts and cultural scene — is a venue for those who collect, create, or covet ceramics… or those just beginning an exploration of the beauty of shaped clay. Representing studio ceramicists from the United States, Europe, and Asia, the Gallery exhibits the functional and non-functional, one-of-a-kind work of both emerging and established clay artists.
This month Vessels Gallery presents the work of American ceramist Angela Cunningham, fascinating and mysterious forms like alien flowers bloom in the gallery space. Here are the words of the artist:
"The imagery in my pieces is drawn largely from forms in nature. I am inspired by the seductive textures, elegant lines and fertile energy of flowers. Fruits and vegetables fascinate me with their tantalizing colors, dense seed structure and grotesque beauty. The human body enters here and there – the curve of hip, the softness of belly….." Her creations are sensually beautiful but dangerous, like those carnivorous plants with their inviting colours and rounded shapes. Be careful !!! You might want to take them all home!

Una bella iniziativa che coniuga due mie grandi passioni. Nella bellissima cornicie dell'Orto Botanico di Roma si avvicenderanno mostre, concerti e spattacoli di danza. Nell'ambito di Arte in Orto ecco apparire anche la ceramica, opere ispirate alla natura all'interno della Serra Francese.

In the superb location of the Orto Botanico, nature inspired ceramic pieces come to life in the frame of French Conservatory. I've asked the curator of the exhibition, Maria Luisa Acierno to tell us more about the pieces on show. "The pieces and the space around... buds like dragonflies, seeds and roots living under the surface, animated flowers, assembled and dismantled, branches, leaves and stones...ceramic sculptures and installations reinterpreting signs of Nature and making it visible, using clay together with other materials, like wood and reclaimed oxidised iron marked by the passing of time... Basic forms, vivid colours, black and white contrast, rough surfaces, burnished, glazed... Wearable Ceramics è curata da Tara Robinson e Linda Ross, e malgrado Detroit non sia dietro l'angolo avete la possibilità di sfogliare una buona selezione dei pezzi su flicker.

Ogni tanto qualcuno mi scrive chiedendomi di laboratori dove poter avvicinarsi alla ceramica, ho pensato quindi di darvi degli indirizzi. Partiamo da Roma la città che mi ospita da diversi anni e da ArgillaNetWork, il laboratorio delle amiche Paola e Alexia.
"Livia" di Paola Grizi

ArgillaNetWork è una realtà nata nel settembre 2010 dall'incontro di Paola Grizi e Alexia Manzoni Porath,la prima proviene da una famiglia di artisti e fin da piccola ha lavorato con la creta, prediligendo la scultura figurativa, con uno stile che coniuga il passato classico a spunti di moderna inventiva, ha esposto in numerose mostre personali e permanentemente a Venezia (alla Galleria Giudecca795), la seconda ha alle spalle una laurea in ceramica alla prestigiosa Università Westimnster di Londra (qualcuno di voi avrà sentito parlare di Harrow... purtroppo sta chiudendo ma era "la scuola" per la ceramica nel Regno Unito) e ha al suo attivo numerose mostre in giro per l'Europa dove ha esposto con uno stile personale e innovativo, in linea con le ultime tendenze e sperimentazioni tecniche.

Questo incontro ha avvicinato due artiste lontane per formazione e stile, ma unite dall'amore incondizionato per l'argilla, creando uno spazio dove la creta viene vissuta con gioia in tutte le sue declinazioni. Il luminoso laboratorio è in una zona molto centrale di Roma, dietro Piazza del Popolo, e offre corsi per grandi e bambini e workshop di approfondimento (qui sono coinvolta anche io ma ne riparleremo ;) ).

Often some readers ask me for ceramic courses, I want to start giving you some addresses. I'll start with what is closest to me ... in Rome ArgillaNetWork is a ceramic studio born out of the love and passion of two friends. Paola Grizi and Alexia Manzoni Porath met by chance while looking for a studio to share, their different backgrounds and artistic styles, helped them to create an environment where clay is shaped in the most wide varieties.

Paola comes from a family of artists, and started working with clay at an early age. She is dedicated to figurative sculpture re-inventing the classical past with touches of modernity, she had several solo exhibitions and her pieces are in permanent collections. Alexia with a Ceramics BA Hons from University of Westminster at Harrow (about to close down next year, this was 'the school' for ceramics) has exhibited across Europe using her innovative techniques to give voice to relevant social issues.
ArgillaNetWork is conveniently located in the centre of Rome and offers various courses to children and adults and specific workshops ( I am involved, I'll let you know ;) )

57th INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION OF CONTEMPORARY CERAMIC ART
FAENZA PRIZE

Grande trionfo giapponese al Concorsi di Faenza dedicato agli under 40 (mi devo ricordare che mia mancano solo pochi anni...).
Ho avuto qualche problema a recuperare le foto ma per darvi un'idea ecco qui i premi:

“PREMIO FAENZA”

SHIGEKI HAYASHI (Japan) with the work “Koz-o Type R”
che è praticamente un bambino/coniglio pronto per muoversi sulla terra e sulla luna, con orecchie radar e altre diavolerie che vorrei condividere con voi se sapessi il giapponese o fossi in grado di capire qualcosa dalla traduzione automatica di Google, che è ovviamente ancora più inconprensibile. Quello che vi posso dire è che è un'opera estremamente giapponese sia per tema ( coniglio astonauta che vive in una tana e va dagli inferi alla luna ?!!) che per realizzazione, il Koz-o è composto di infiniti pezzi da assemblare...insomma un lavoraccio
Detto ciò mi piace, è divertente e molto "giovane" ( anche se il caro Shigeki è alla sua ultima partecipazione essendo alla soglia dei 40) e diciamocelo...questo Shigeki è un mito degli stampi!
Chi volesse approfondire la parte di critica qui c'è un testo in inglese !

Here are the winners of the 57th edition of Premio Faenza dedicated to ceramic artists under the age of 40. Japan was very well represented winnig three of the best prizes.

baby meet cosmic rabbit in a fusion of old japanese tales and manga comics. Very japanese for subject (?!) and making, the Koz-o comes in many minuscule pieces to assemble. Thumbs up for the Ikea spacebaby !
