Ceramics at Affordable Art Fair London

Sempre all' AAF altre teste di Sara Scott.

Intresting how ceramics and ceramists come up in diverse places, here are some examples at the Affordable Art Fair (great and fun initiative!) in Battersea Park. These heads by Johan Thunell appeared in The Guardian selection of the  of the best images from around the world.24 hours in pictures www.guardian.co.uk

WHITE - GOLD - PORCELAIN

11. März 2012 WEISS - GOLD - PORZELLAN - WHITE - GOLD - PORCELAIN

The words WHITE - GOLD - CHINA build an associative chain. Each term generates its own memories. The achromatic color white stands for purity - innocence - virginity - infinity.

Gold, the noble metal with his unique flair - wealth. Porcelain - the white gold is a special material in contemporary jewelry. The unusual technique to burn china with silver
, chains to be made of porcelain and the virtuosity of the ramification in silver.

Anna Kiryakova (BG), Violaine Ulmer (F) and Zwetelina Alexieva (BG) show works on the subject.

The vernissage will take place Sunday the 11th March 2012 12:00 to 19:00 in the workshop gallery of contemporary jewelery and design - Ariane Hartmann on the Eppenhauserstr. 14, 58093 Hagen.

Gustavo Perez @ Erskine Hall & Coe

Ora a noi:

Thanks to the lovely people at  Erskine Hall & Coe I can admire Gustavo Perez's new works without taking a plane. Well it's not exactly the same thing, but has the added value of great gift . Thanks !!

Gustavo Pérez is mexican ceramist that makes vessels that are simple and elegant, often incised by precised lines that reveal an underneath layer. His work is constantly evolving though remaining faithful to the cleanness and smoothness of  the forms. I see a lot of Miró

GUSTAVO PÉREZ

14 March - 5 April
"In the eleven years since Gustavo Pérez ‘s work last graced a London gallery his voice has become more distinctive, the use of colour more exciting, his love of music more evident in his work. These new pots retain his great sense of precision and skill, yet with an increased sense of rhythm, tension and muscularity. There is a willingness to take risks."

Out of Sync, Fernando Casasempere

The Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court

Somerset House, London

London based Chilean artist Fernando Casasempere’s large scale courtyard installation recreates the joy we feel at the site of blossoming daffodils signalling the end of winter and the beginning of spring. 10,000 ceramic daffodils, placed in a naturalistic setting within The Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court, will remind us of the wonder and accuracy of nature’s clock, against the backdrop of an ever changing environment.
Since 1991 Casasempere has been working with clay that is a by-product from industrial processes.

The Clayer, E-courses

I am very curious about this on-line course given by San Francisco based Diana Fayt, I wonder what is like...
It has the great advantage of cutting the costs and gives you the great chance to learn new techniques from someone that lives on the other side of the world.
The course has started by you can still join:

"The Clayer, Part One: Surfacing, will be a place to learn how to create rich and dynamic surfaces on clay. The course will run for six weeks from February 27th, through April 8th, 2012.  During the six weeks we will cover various surface applications on clay such as: mishima inlay, monoprinting on clay, carving and printing with your own block prints. We will explore using unusual objects as printing tools as well as learn how to other clay drawing media such as underglaze pencils."

Niisato Akio

fortunati !!

Love great craft galleries, all the beautiful materials: ceramics, glass, metal, textiles worked in amazing ways.

"I have created a very special exhibit for
Made in the Middle, which is Craftspace’s 18 month touring exhibition to be launched at mac Birmingham on the 13th of February 2012. The exhibit is called The Entomologist which is a new interpretation of Stirring the Swarm from the perspective of a scientist who discovered the curious phenomenon at Wollaton Hall. The scientist has been tracking the swarm, and capturing insects to study.  Her actions however have not gone unnoticed and after recently enraging the swarm by capturing their Queen, a plague of insects has sieged her office, seeking vengeance.
This exciting interactive exhibit is accompanied by the world’s first ceramic IPhone App, which I was commissioned to produce by Made in the Middle to support my exhibit. Christina Antemann answers CV' 6

Occasional Craving

CV: Il tuo miglior e peggior momento ceramico

CV:  Five words that describe your work
CA: Obsessive Compulsive Porcelain Disorder (okay it is only four, but that is it)

CV:  What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practice?
CA: My strong will and determination helps, plus the above mentioned

CV:  What is your favourite ceramic piece of all times ?
CA:  little piece by Beatrice Wood with two figures (a man and a woman) sitting on a bench looking at each other from the corners of their eyes. It is so simple, but somehow it made me realize that I wanted to make figurative work in clay rather than teapots
CV:  Where do you get your inspiration from?
CA: I pour through books about the history of porcelain, dining culture in the 18th Century, plus read and listen to all kinds of novels and historical fiction. It is the story I am looking for, especially those little details that are often left out of a strict record or factual account of an event
CV:  If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?
CA: I love my studio in Oregon, it is beautiful and quiet and has everything that I need, but currently I am working at the MEISSEN Porcelain Manufactory in Meissen, Germany in their Art Campus program which is an invitation-based artist residency program, so I am bouncing back and forth every few months between worlds.

CV:  Your best and worst ceramic moment
CA: I think there have been many of both, one that comes to mind is a piece that I made a few years ago, that I neglected to support enough in the firing, it slumped and was ruined. It was one of the worst moments because I opened the kiln on Christmas day to see the results. The good part about the whole experience, was that I immediately could see how to correct the mistake for the next piece. It was a huge learning experience and also taught me that I can get back on the horse

Remembering Emmanuel Cooper

Nel 2002 era stato nominato OBE, officer of the Order of the British Empire (Ufficiale dell'ordine dell'Impero Britannico)!

Lucie Rie: Modernist Potter

 Contemporary Ceramics

The Ceramics Book: An A-Z Guide to 300 Ceramic Artists

10,000 Years of Pottery

The Potter's Book of Glaze Recipes

Saturday the ceramic world lost one of its pillars, Emmanuel Cooper, potter, writer, critic, teacher, co-founder of the great magazine Ceramic Review, member of the Craft Potters Association and awarded in 2002, with the OBE for services to art.
"it is hard to imagine the UK ceramics world without him in it" (Ceramic Review)

Above there is a list of Emmanuel's books, this is how I like to remember him

.

Thank you Emmanuel

Juliana Cerqueira-Leite

(OH Object made by pushing clay  as far as reach could extend while standing in the same spot, then casting the result form in latex)
"The body is both the creator and subject of Juliana Cerqueira-Leite’s work. This Brazilian-American artist begins each sculpture or canvas by literally throwing herself into it – burrowing through huge blocks of clay, pouring plaster repeatedly over her body, and manipulating her paint-covered body over canvas panels. This very physical process leaves traces of the motion, dimensions, physical limitations and extremities of her body, and from these beginnings she makes her drawings, and her sculptures with metal, latex, wood and plaster."
