Le Porcellane di Betty Woodman
Lo splendido casino delle delizie alla sommità del Giardino di Boboli, ospita fino al 15 febbraio una mostra dedicata alle porcellane di Betty Woodman. In esposizione le creazioni nate dalla collaborazione dell'artista con la celebre manifattura di Sevres. Servizi da tavola colorati e fantasiosi prendono il posto di più classiche decorazioni, rinnovando questa nobile arte. La Woodman scherzando diceva di voler dare al pubblico l'impressione di essere invitati ad un tè da Maria Antonietta, ma a dire il vero mi sembra più adatto ad un sofisticato cappelaio matto di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie.

The Porcelain of Betty Woodman

Until the 15th of February the beautiful location of Palazzo Pitti host the porcelain collection of Betty Woodman. In the 30 years collaboration with Sevres manufacturing, the american ceramist created a dinner set of amazing colours. She wanted the public to feel as they were invited at Marie Antoinette tea party, but to me it seems more like a very sophisticated Mad Hatter in Wonderland.

Il Magico Mondo di Kate MacDowell

Passeggiando per il web, sono capitata sul sito di questa incredibile artista. Kate MacDowell, americana dell'Oregon ma cittadina del mondo, realizza incredibili sculture in porcellana che sembrano appartenere ad un congelato mondo fiabesco.

Animali, arti umani , foglie e rami si aggrovigliano creando una storia incredibile e spesso terrificante. Facendo riferimento a diverse immagini che fanno parte della nostra storia, dai miti alla scienza, Kate con instancabile bravura, da vita a queste creature partendo da un panetto di fragile porcellana.

Nel suo statement troviamo questa citazione di C.S. Lewis

‘Non vogliamo, soltanto, vedere la bellezza. Vogliamo qualcos’altro che a stento può essere messo in parole, essere unito alla bellezza che vediamo,passarci dentro, riceverla per poterci bagnare e diventarne parte.’

This is the work of American artist Kate MacDowell, creator of magical worlds enclosed in that fragile material that is porcelain. Probabilmente avrete già da tempo aperto un Etsy shop, ma per tutti quelli che fossero rimasti indietro eccovi un p' di informazioni sul nuovo web fenomeno del handmade.

The Incredible Art of Nymphemburg

Mentre ero a N.Y. sono rimasta ipnotizzata davanti alla vetrina di quello che ho più tardi scoperto essere un fabbro, beh, non un semplice fabbro ma un'apoteosi di fabbritudine versione grande mela. Le tre vetrine affaciate su di una stradina modaiola esponevano meravigliosi gioielli, piccoli rami di metallo intrecciati formavano collier degni di una fata del bosco e foglie stroppiciate diventatavo bellissime spille. Oltre alla bellezza delle realizzazioni in metallo ad attirarmi era stata la presenza di teschi e animali in porcellana. Si sa i teschi vanno di moda, ma questi erano semplicemente di un'altra categoria. Dopo ricerche ed alcuni sforzi di memoria ho trovato la fonte: la Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg, un' antica fabbrica di porcellana Bavarese.
Vi consiglio di perdervi sul loro sito e vedere le meraviglie che la maestria e l'esperienza di questi artigiani producono.

While in N.Y. I was captured by the beauty of a window display, there were jewels like fragile branches of trees, little insects made into beautiful pins and some incredible porcelain skulls. These were made by Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg, the prestigious Bavarian porcelain house operating since 1761.
Nymphemburg is continuously evolving working with artists and designers to create new incredible creations. Wonder around on their site and discover what the experience and mastery of these craftsmen are capable of producing.

Il Nerikomi è una tecnica di lavorazione della ceramica che consiste nella costruzione di un disegno mediante la sovrapposizione di segmenti di creta di colore diverso. Chiamata anche Neriage, anche questo termine appartiene più a quello che in Italia si chiama lavorazione ad agata, e spesso usata nella lavorazione del vetro per creare interessanti effetti come quelli delle murrine. Dorothy Feibleman è una maestra assoluta di tecnica e bellezza. Vi assicuro per creare un oggetto così ci vuole pazienza e maestria eccezionali. Visitate il suo sito e il blog, queste ciotole sono magiche!

Nerikomi is a Japanese technique of creating patterns with different coloured clays. Often called Neriage, but the terms seems to be slightly different. The results are spectacular and Dorothy Feibleman is an absolute master of this art. Take a look at her work and try to imagine the patience and precision needed for creating such magic work.

Traffic Patterns@ Greenwhich House Pottery

NY è una città meravigliosa e piena di cose interessanti, anche se pensavo che la ceramica aveesse più spazio. Ho battuto attentamente le strade di Manhattan e dintorni e sono rimasta un poco delusa. Vi farò comunque un resoconto delle mie visite. A parte la bellissima mostra di Akio Takamori da Barry Friedman, sono stata alla Greenwich House Pottery, bellissimo spazio nel cuore del village che quest'anno ha festeggiato i 100 anni. Giovedì sera inauguravano la mostra Traffic Patterns con opere di Kathy Erteman, e oltre alla bellezza delle opere ho molto apprezzato sia la piccola galleria con i pezzi in vendita, che le diverse sale dedicate ai corsi, lavorare lì deve essere un sogno. Sempre alla ricerca di ceramiche sono andata al MAD, il museo di arte e design che ha una collezione veramente straordinaria, ho finalmente avuto il picere di vedere dal vivo ciò che avevo ammirato solo in fotografia. Se volete farvi un'idea potete andare a vedere qui.
Un'amica mi aveva consigliato una visita al Noguchi Museum, e dato che amo molto le opere realizzate da questo artista sono corsa. Lo spazio, sebbene fuori da Manhattan è incredibilmente bello, silenzioso e magico come un tempio. Le opere esposte sono tantissime e incredibilmente moderne, ma purtroppo quelle realizzate in ceramica che conoscevo bene dalle monografie che ho a casa, non c'erano. Che peccato !
Purtroppo la mia vacanza è finita ma mi riprometto la prossima volta di espandere la mia visita a quei meravigliosi centri che in America mangiano, bevono e respirano "clay".

The pottery at night

NY is a great place full of interesting things to do, but I was hoping to find more space for contemporary ceramics. I walked up and down the streets of Manhattan and this is what I saw. As you know, I went to the beautiful exhibition Akio Takamori exhibition at Barry Friedman (one of the best things I saw), went to the opening of Traffic Patterns, show by Kathy Erteman at the Greenwich House Pottery. Incredible space in the heart of the village celebrating this year its 100 anniversary. I also went to the MAD, the Museum of Art and Design on Columbus Circle. The Museum has an incredible collection of ceramics that you can browse here. A friend had mention The Noguchi Museum in Queens, and I was happy to leave the island to experience the peace and modern beauty of Isamu Noguchi's art. Unfortunately there were none of those ceramics that I came to know from his monographs. Pity my holiday is over, but next time I'm going to expand my visit to those centre of ceramic excellence where you eat, drink, breath only clay!

Scusate l'assenza di questi giorni, ma si sa nella Grande Mela nessuno ha mai tempo!
Pero' mi sono applicata sul campo, andando a vedere una mostra fantastica. Akio Takamori e' un artista davvero eccezionale, e questa mostra da Barry Friedman incanta. Ispirata da Alice nel paese delle meraviglie e dalla Venere, patrimonio di una cultura occidentale, Takamori le trasforma in idoli giapponesi, maestosi e oscuri.
Le statue sono grandi ed incutono un timore quasi reverenziale dal vivo, ma sono anche molto inquitanti testimoni di chissa' quale evento.

Sorry for the absence of these past days, but we all know that time runs fast in the Big Apple!
But on my behalf I have some exceptionally good material to show you. I went to see Akio Takamori at Barry Friedman gallery and I am still enchanted. The work inspired by Alice In Wonderland and the Venus, takes a bizarre oriental twist. The statues big and scary, seem to hide some terrible secret under the opaque layers of underglaze. Takamori is great master and this show is a clear evidence of that.

CV: What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practice?

MJ: Per rispondere ho dovuto chiedere ad un caro amico, che mia detto che sono come quasi tutti i Frisoni (abitanti della Frisia, area sulla costa Olandese) : testarda (ahimé)
To answer this one I asked a dear friend, he told me he thought I am as almost all Frisians (sic!..) stubborn!

CV: What is your favourite ceramic piece ever?

MJ: Per rispondere a questa terza domando mi ci è voluto parecchio tempo; è iniziato con delle diapositive e foto che illustravano le mie fonti d'ispirazione, il numero continuava ad aumentare... alcune foto diventavano un film, e un film non può essere solamente un'illustrazione di qualche cosa, ma ha una propria storia...alla fine, grazie anche a te, eccolo qui:
The third answer took me a lot of time; it started with some slides and photographs that could illustrate my inspirations, the quantity grew and grew...some of the photographs were transformed into a slide-movie, the movie was not content to be 'just' an illustration to something else, it became a story on its own...finally, thanks also to you, here it is:


CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?

MJ: Sono cresciuta in Olanda e nella mia casa c'erano molti pezzi in ceramica; le mattonelle bianche e blue tipiche olandesi, la porcellana cinese; la maggior parte reminescenze del periodo d'oro Olandese. Più tardi mi sono trasferita con la mia famiglia per un breve periodo ai Caraibi e per un lungo periodo in Cile, dove ho amato e felicemente usato le ciotole e i vasi in terraglia locale, neri e lucenti ma senza smalto. Più recentemente ho vissuto due anni in Portogallo e in qualche maniera la città piena di ricordi dell'epoca d'oro così simile a quella Olandese, mi hanno riportata a casa...
Forse le mattonelle più belle che io abbia mai visto sono le antiche Iznik a Istanbul, con iloro colori vibranti e gli smalti vetrosi incredibilmente trasparenti. Tra le ceramiche moderne, mi piacciono molto le sottili ciotole lavorate a pizzichotto di Mary Rogers, le ciotole eleganti e garbate dai bellissimi colori di Alev Siesbye, ammiro le citole giocosamente piegate di Kim Sun le stravagantemente colorate e allegre ceramiche di Kate Malone e mi piace moltissimo lo smalto tremendamente sensuale che gocciola pesante e voluttuoso dalle forme forti e spigolose create da Masamichi Yoshikawa.
I grew up in the Netherlands and in my family homes there were always ceramics; the white and blue dutch tiles, the Chinese porcelain wares; most of them reminiscences of the Dutch Golden Age. Later I lived with my family for a short while in the Caribbean and for a long time in Chile, where I loved and used happily the local black polished shining but unglazed earthenware vessels and bowls. More recently we lived two years in Portugal and somehow in that city full of reminiscences of a golden age similar to the Dutch one, I came back home ...Maybe the most beautiful tiles I ever saw were the old Iznik ones with their vibrant colors and incredibly transparent glasslike glazes, in Istanbul. From the modern ceramics I like very much the thin pinched bowls of Mary Rogers,the beautifully coloured quiet and elegant bowls of Alev Siesbye, I admire the playful folded porcelain bowls of Kim Sun and the extravagantly coloured joyful pieces of Kate Malone and I really love very much the terribly sensual glaze that drips so thickly and voluptuously down from the strong and angular forms created by Masamichi Yoshikawa.

CV: If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?

MJ: Il posto dove vivere e lavorare...eh beh..; un grande giardino (anche per il mio atelier) senza zanzare...per favore !

Ceramique Paris

A Parigi dalla Tradizione all'Avanguardia

Come sempre in prima linea , la mostra "Ceramiche 14 - Paris", continua la sua politica di apertura al mondo e offre ancora una volta una grande vetrina di arte contemporanea della ceramica. Quest'anno, è ospite d'onore il Portogallo, rappresentato da tre ceramisti, attori e testimoni di varie correnti di "Ceramica Contemporanea Portoghese".
Heitor Figueiredo ci immerge in un mondo ludico dove la fantasia crea una architettura colorata, Sofia Beça esibisce strutture dove l'impronta dell'uomo compete con la natura.
Mario Reis confronte l'approche séculaire de la céramique portugaise et en fait un ensemble homogène entre tradition et modernité. Mario Reis analizza l'approccio laico della ceramica portoghese e crea un continuum tra tradizione e modernità.
Con molte nazionalità e generazioni presenti, Ceramica 14 traduce una lingua universale influenzata da un territorio di conoscenza comune, ma in ogni fase la "ceramica" racconta una storia diversa.

In Paris from Tradition to Contemporary

As always at the forefront of events on "pottery", the exhibition "Ceramics 14 - Paris" continues its policy of openness to the world and offers once again a great showcase of contemporary ceramic art. This year, Portugal is our guest, represented by three potters actors and witnesses of various currents of "Contemporary Portuguese Ceramics" . Heitor Figueiredo plunges us into a world where playful imagination takes us into a colorful architecture, Sofia Beça and her installations where the imprint of man compete with nature. Mario Reis confronts the secular approach of the Portuguese ceramics and creates a continuum between tradition and modernity. Many nationalities and generations at Ceramic 14 to reflect on a sort of universal language influenced by a local common knowledge, but "ceramics" at every stage, tells us a different story.

Avrete ormai capito quanto io ami la porcellana made in Australia. E' cos8ì eccitante vedere come gli artisti australiani riescano a produrre delle cose molto sofisticate e al tempo stesso molto fresche. Mel Robson è una delle mie preferite per la poesia delle sue opere. Visitando il suo blog ho trovato queste nuove ciotole e me ne sono innamorata. Vi riporto le sue parole:

"Ogni ciotola è decorata con un poema o una ricetta nella scrittura di una delle incredibili donne della mia famiglia. Mi sono emozionata a vederle tutte in fila sulla mio tavolo da lavoro, questa piccola collezione di ciotole coperte dalla scrittura di sorelle, zie, madri e nonne".

Each bowl is decorated with a poem or a recipe in the handwriting of some pretty amazing women in my family. I got quite sentimental as they sat there all together on my workbench, this little collection of bowls covered in the handwriting of sisters, aunts, mothers and grandmothers.

The work of Philip Eglin is truly fascinating, his figurines come from ancient times but speak a very modern language. The Virgins with Child, the Jesus and the Crucifictions propose religion as a modern mythology. The fragile porcelain statues seem to faint showing us their shalloness.

La Voce Femminile della Ceramica Giapponese

Chi ama la ceramica conosce bene le meraviglie degli artisti giapponesi, maestri di naturalezza e perfezione. I maestri erano spesso uomini e alle donne era relegato il ruolo di aiutanti. Troppo duro il lavoro di preparazione dell'impasto e troppo impegnativa la costruzione di grandi vasi. Inoltre non potevano lavorare al tornio o avvicinarsi ai forni, per paura che scoprissero le particolari tecniche di famiglia e le diffondessero dopo il matrimonio ad un altro clan.
Nel dopoguerra un gruppo di donne pioniere cominciò a creare pezzi influenzati dalle tecniche tradizionali e dalla natura. Ormai la secoda generazione di ceramiste giapponesi ha conquistato la sua posizione e può permettersi più liberamente di esprimere la sua voce.
A queste due generazioni di artiste è dedicata la mostra: Soaring Voices: Contemporary Japanese Women Ceramic Artists fino a metà Ottobre al Crocker Art Museum di Sacramento.

Ceramics lovers know all to well the magic of Japanese artists, masters of perfection and simplicity. They were all men, the women were supposed to help in the background. Too much physical strength was required to prepare the clay and women were not trusted. The families were also scared of losing their technical secrets to an other clan by marriage, so the daughters were kept well off the kilns. After the war a group of pioneers started creating work that was both traditional and poetic. Now, second generation, Japanese women artist have gained the power to let their voices be heard. To these two generations of incredible women is dedicated the exhibition: Soaring Voices: Contemporary Japanese Women Ceramic Artists until mid October at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.

Come al solito la Galerie Besson non delude, e per il mese di Settembre ha organizzato una mostra molto interessante. I quattro artisti che ci presenta vengono dalla Finlandia, precisamente da Helsinki, e nei loro lavori ci parlano di quella terra così particolare.
Le opere, di dimensioni diverse, sono tutte caratterizzate da una forte semplicità quasi primitiva nell'uso dei materiali e delle tecniche. La mostra è visitabile on-line sul sito della galleria.

As usual Galerie Besson is of inspiration. The exhibition scheduled for the month of September takes us up to the land of Finland. Four artists, all living and working around Helsinki, open us a window on the best of contemporary Finnish ceramics. The strong simplicity of the work, and the use of the various techniques, speak of the artist's strong sense of nature and of Finland peculiar atmosphere. The exhibition is fully illustrated on-line. Miquel Barceló and Josef Nadj, le infinite possibilità della creta

Questa performance creata per il prestigioso Festival di Avignone, vede due artisti alle prese con un muro di argilla rossa. Miquel Barcelò, pittore che da anni lavora con la ceramica, e Josef Nadj, ballerino e coreografo. I due si scontrano con la terra cruda creando situazioni drammatiche e divertenti, plasmando la materia e creando continuamente situazioni diverse. Barcelò, artista che rappresenta la Spagna a questa edizione della Biennale di Venezia, ha iniziato a usare la ceramica nei mesi passati in Dogon dove il calore e il vento rendevano la pittura impossibile, e ne ha scoperto la forza primitiva e moderna. Le opere presentate mantengono la loro caratteristica di forza primordiale.

Miquel Barceló and Josef Nadj, the endless possibilities of clay

This performance created for the prestigious Avignone Festival, shows two artists facing a wall of red clay. Miquel Barcelò, a painter that has been working with clay for several years, and Josef Nadj, a famous dancer and choreographer. The two work with the clay creating situations that go from dramatic to ridiculous, shaping the material in a constant changing scenario. Barcelò represents Spain at this year Venice Biennale, he started using clay during his stay in Dogon Mali, because the heat and the wind made painting impossible, and then discovered the strength and modernity of the oldest art material on earth. The works presented at the Biennale maintain their primitive power.
