Mel Robson

Mel Robson is an Australian ceramist, who creates a wide range of beautiful work. From the wafer thin densely decorated non-functional vessels to the everyday poetic pitchers and bowls. Most of her work is completed by adding images with incredibly complicated decals, but all of her work, functional or not, is simply inspiring. Here are her answers and a selection of her work. Have a look at Mel's blog http://feffakookan.blogspot.com/

CV: Five words that describe your work

MR: I mostly work with porcelain. Its just so clean and white and light and versatile and evocative and classic and contemporary all at the same time - and that is probably how I would also describe my work!

CV: What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practice?

MR: Patience. I am actually not a very patient person at all but when it comes to making my work i strangely seem to have all the patience in the world...except when it comes to firing and opening kilns....

CV: What is your favorite ceramic piece ever?

MR: I'm not sure I could choose just one, but I would
probably have to say anything by Gwynn Hansen Piggott (on the left, Still Life).
Non credo di poterne scegliere solo uno, ma probabilmente qualsiasi cosa di Gwynn Hansen Piggott (a sinistra, Still Life)

CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?

MR: This is always a very hard question to answer as inspiration comes from so many things and gets distilled and diluted and whirled around in the big mass of imagery and experience we are subjected to everyday. A lot of my work draws on my own family history so that is a big inspiration. I also spend a lot of time in libraries looking through old records and archives. Lots of ideas come from that.

CV: If you could chose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?

MR: aaah...I could never choose just one place! I'd like to have 6 studios on six different continents and spend my time wandering from one to the other! Is that too much to ask??!!

Searching for Beauty p. 17

Several posts ago we spoke about an unusual book on the ceramic shelf, "Searching for Beauty" that came out a couple of years ago. This book is a collection of letter sent by Richard Jacobs, a ceramic lover and collector, to ceramist Christa Assad. In the book the original point of view of Jacobs raises many very good questions. Maybe now we can share more on ceramics and life on his personal blog. Here is a little taste on personal success. Searching for Beauty p. 17

“… Is innate talent the ultimate determiner of success, or like so many other human enterprises, does packaging, marketing, the right connections and pandering to popular taste determine success? Do you measure success by the quality of the pot on the shelf or the amount of money in the bank? Can you really have both?..” Searching for Beauty, page 17

"The Age of the World" sono dei vasi-urne creati dal designer francese super-cool Mathieu Lehanneur.

Sculpting Light

"The translucency of fine high-fired porcelain has led me...to throw forms which give light. These ideas stem from the nature of the material, forms that can grow from the potter's wheel, the process of firing and a sense of adventure with light and space."
These are the words of Margaret O'Rorke, ceramic artist devoted to the magic of porcelain.
Her creations, often born on the wheel, become white-hot essences that grow from walls or float from the ceiling. The results leave no space for words...

Anthony Shaw Collection

room view n. 9 @Anthony Shaw Collection

A Collection of Love
The couturier Anthony Shaw has been collecting for over 30 years wonderful ceramic pieces especially among the production of the British Studio Pottery. This term represent a way of working, artists alone or in small groups creating a unique production of few pieces followed during the entire process by the artist/s. In the lovely 19th Century house on Billing Place in London, we can admire work from Lucie Rie and Hans Coper, Ian Godfrey, Jim Malone and many others. I love the idea of being able to view an exhibitions, especially a collection, outside the white gallery wall, in the rooms you can still breath the emotions that the pieces have created and still create. At the moment, John Christian, art historian and auction house Christie's consultant, is paying a tribute to the purest form of collecting, the one only guided by the heart. He created a little exhibition in the room at 11 Billing Place.

Korean Contemporary Ceramics

Intanto in Corea...

Meanwhile in Korea...
A fellow blogger is planning a work trip to Korea, and while there would like to explore the field of contemporary ceramics...what can I suggest? Korea has a great tradition, home of the beautiful celadon, host the biggest ceramic biennale in the world and has fantastic museums. But Korean ceramic artists, rarely have their own site, or blog and the galleries...well let's say that language is a problem not to be underestimate. Anyway here is what I found

Matt and Dave's Clays

Wow!
Porcelain is Fun!
Normally we would think of porcelain has a very difficult material, only for professionals, something that has to be taken very seriously. Luckily someone doesn't share this view and decided to to something about it. Here come Matt Katz and Dave Finkelburg, respectively artist working as an engineer, and an engineer that throw pots. The two met at Alfred University-The New York State College of Ceramics, and decided to create a porcelain that was easier to use, a porcelain for everybody,
Porcelain for the People was born! A clay body and a casting slip that behaves...Wow! Unfortunately New York is a bit far, but if you are closer, their on-line shop is now open. Or in the meantime have fun with Matt's Blog.

Today I saw Simone Fraser using a blowtorch on one of her monumental pots.....

Jan Guy did a fascinating talk on touch and the clash between the handmade pot and the industrial world. She talked about the sense of touch between mother and child being the first reference to an understandng of space.

And I was mesmerised by Lynda Draper's philosophical reflection on her journey as an artist from the constraints of suburban Sydney to the nostaligia triggered by the the abandoned abjects she found in her present home- a ramshackle wooden beach house.

This was one of those wonderful artists talks that illuminates the work and gives insight into both the creative process and the emotional journey of the artist.

FD: Pop, grande impatto visivo, immediata lettura, facilmente riconoscibili
e accessibili.

CV: Five words that describe your work
FB: Pop, big visual impact, immediate reading, easily recognizable and accessible.

CV: What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practice?
FB: Being curious and tenacious. An artist has to be alert and curious about what surrounds him and especially in my case, tenacious to work with clay.

CV: What is your favourite ceramic piece ever?
FB: It has to be Bla Bla. A piece that receive positive feedback also from the public.

CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?
FB: Communication and the difficulty of the modern man to engage with the others,
has been and still is my first source of inspiration, but also daily life... When I walk around the streets or in the subway, I look at people around my and I receive strong input that I elaborate for my works. For example my recent pieces on the crowd, are inspired by the masses of people that use the underground and from the noise and overcrowds that comes with it.

CV: If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?
FB: I've been living and working in Milan for some years now, and is a city that I really like.
