Una bella iniziativa che coniuga due mie grandi passioni. Nella bellissima cornicie dell'Orto Botanico di Roma si avvicenderanno mostre, concerti e spattacoli di danza. Nell'ambito di Arte in Orto ecco apparire anche la ceramica, opere ispirate alla natura all'interno della Serra Francese.

In the superb location of the Orto Botanico, nature inspired ceramic pieces come to life in the frame of French Conservatory. I've asked the curator of the exhibition, Maria Luisa Acierno to tell us more about the pieces on show. "The pieces and the space around... buds like dragonflies, seeds and roots living under the surface, animated flowers, assembled and dismantled, branches, leaves and stones...ceramic sculptures and installations reinterpreting signs of Nature and making it visible, using clay together with other materials, like wood and reclaimed oxidised iron marked by the passing of time... Basic forms, vivid colours, black and white contrast, rough surfaces, burnished, glazed... Ogni tanto qualcuno mi scrive chiedendomi di laboratori dove poter avvicinarsi alla ceramica, ho pensato quindi di darvi degli indirizzi. Partiamo da Roma la città che mi ospita da diversi anni e da ArgillaNetWork, il laboratorio delle amiche Paola e Alexia.
"Livia" di Paola Grizi

ArgillaNetWork è una realtà nata nel settembre 2010 dall'incontro di Paola Grizi e Alexia Manzoni Porath,la prima proviene da una famiglia di artisti e fin da piccola ha lavorato con la creta, prediligendo la scultura figurativa, con uno stile che coniuga il passato classico a spunti di moderna inventiva, ha esposto in numerose mostre personali e permanentemente a Venezia (alla Galleria Giudecca795), la seconda ha alle spalle una laurea in ceramica alla prestigiosa Università Westimnster di Londra (qualcuno di voi avrà sentito parlare di Harrow... purtroppo sta chiudendo ma era "la scuola" per la ceramica nel Regno Unito) e ha al suo attivo numerose mostre in giro per l'Europa dove ha esposto con uno stile personale e innovativo, in linea con le ultime tendenze e sperimentazioni tecniche.

Questo incontro ha avvicinato due artiste lontane per formazione e stile, ma unite dall'amore incondizionato per l'argilla, creando uno spazio dove la creta viene vissuta con gioia in tutte le sue declinazioni. Il luminoso laboratorio è in una zona molto centrale di Roma, dietro Piazza del Popolo, e offre corsi per grandi e bambini e workshop di approfondimento (qui sono coinvolta anche io ma ne riparleremo ;) ).

Often some readers ask me for ceramic courses, I want to start giving you some addresses. I'll start with what is closest to me ... in Rome ArgillaNetWork is a ceramic studio born out of the love and passion of two friends. Paola Grizi and Alexia Manzoni Porath met by chance while looking for a studio to share, their different backgrounds and artistic styles, helped them to create an environment where clay is shaped in the most wide varieties.

Paola comes from a family of artists, and started working with clay at an early age. She is dedicated to figurative sculpture re-inventing the classical past with touches of modernity, she had several solo exhibitions and her pieces are in permanent collections. Alexia with a Ceramics BA Hons from University of Westminster at Harrow (about to close down next year, this was 'the school' for ceramics) has exhibited across Europe using her innovative techniques to give voice to relevant social issues.
ArgillaNetWork is conveniently located in the centre of Rome and offers various courses to children and adults and specific workshops ( I am involved, I'll let you know ;) )

Grande trionfo giapponese al Concorsi di Faenza dedicato agli under 40 (mi devo ricordare che mia mancano solo pochi anni...).
Ho avuto qualche problema a recuperare le foto ma per darvi un'idea ecco qui i premi:

SHIGEKI HAYASHI (Japan) with the work “Koz-o Type R”
che è praticamente un bambino/coniglio pronto per muoversi sulla terra e sulla luna, con orecchie radar e altre diavolerie che vorrei condividere con voi se sapessi il giapponese o fossi in grado di capire qualcosa dalla traduzione automatica di Google, che è ovviamente ancora più inconprensibile. Quello che vi posso dire è che è un'opera estremamente giapponese sia per tema ( coniglio astonauta che vive in una tana e va dagli inferi alla luna ?!!) che per realizzazione, il Koz-o è composto di infiniti pezzi da assemblare...insomma un lavoraccio
Detto ciò mi piace, è divertente e molto "giovane" ( anche se il caro Shigeki è alla sua ultima partecipazione essendo alla soglia dei 40) e diciamocelo...questo Shigeki è un mito degli stampi!
Chi volesse approfondire la parte di critica qui c'è un testo in inglese !

Non essendomi ancora ripresa dalla notizia dell'imminente chiusura della Galerie Besson, che non riuscirò a vedere neanche un' ultima volta :( , voglio dedicare un po' di spazio alle gallerie storiche che continuano da anni nella loro opera.

Marianne Heller ha creato la Gallery for English Ceramics nel 1978 usando come spazio una stanza della sua abitazione a Sandhausen, vicino a Heidelberg in Germania. Si è subito specializzata nell'esporre i migliori artisti della studio pottery inglese : David Leach, Colin Pearson, Michael Casson, Richard Batterham e John Maltby, giusto per nominarne qualcuno.
Nel 1982 ha inaugurato i Potter's Seminars, corsi estivi che sono presto diventati meta di pellegrinaggio di collezionisti, ceramisti ed entusiasti.

Nel corso degli anni Marianne Heller ha ampliato il suo spettro esponendo ceramisti della Modern Contemporary British Ceramics come Ken Eastman e Richard Slee, e tra le prime, ha invitato anche ceramisti dell'Est Europa. La sua fama cresceva e la stanza di Sandhausen non poteva più contenere vent'anni di attività, nel 1998 la Galleria si sposta nel centro di Heidelberg e inaugura con i lavori di quattro ceramisti che l'avevano accompagnata dagli albori: David Leach, Colin Pearsons, Ewen Henderson e Gordon Baldwin. Sempre nel '98 per festeggiare i vent'anni della galleria Marianne Heller dedica una mostra alle donne: "Women in Europe" 45 artiste provenienti da 16 paesi diversi.

Oggi la galleria ha una parte dedicate alle opere permanenti, e una parte per le mostre temporanee. Molti pezzi della collezione sono on-line, ci sono molti dei miei artisti preferiti vi consiglio di dare un'occhiata ( Isezaki Jun, Satoru Hoshino, Takeshi Yasuda, Wouter Dam, Pippin Drysdale...) e fino al 22 Maggio "Tea Table" esposizione degli studenti della Muthesius University di Kiel (Germania) insieme al loro professore Kerstin Abrham e seminari di Julian Stair e Young Jae Lee sul tema dei tavolini da te.

Not having yet fully recovered from the news of the closing of Galerie Besson in London, I feel like dedicating some space to those galleries who made the history of modern ceramics and to the people that stood year after year behind these wonderful institutions.

One of these is Gallery Marriane Heller in Heidelberg Germany. Marianne launched the gallery in 1978 in a room of her house in Sandhausen near Heidelberg in Germany.
The enterprise very quickly gained momentum, only the best pots by the best English potters were put on show. David Leach, Colin Pearson, Michael Casson, Richard Batterham, John Maltby, to name only a few, were presented in one man shows. In 1982 Marianne Heller inaugurated her Potters´ Seminars which soon became an institution, attracting collectors, potters and amateur enthusiasts who pilgrimaged to Sandhausen every year in midsummer. The best potters demonstrated at the wheel, talked about their craft, and imparted freely their knowledge and expertise.

Colin Pearson

In 1998, after twenty years of great work the gallery needed more space and moved to the present location in the centre of Heidelberg. The gallery features a permanent collection with work, not only from english ceramists, but with great pieces from Asia and around the world ( Isezaki Jun, Satoru Hoshino, Takeshi Yasuda, Wouter Dam, Pippin Drysdale...). The temporary exhibitions often present new artists and involve more established ceramists as guest lectures.

Mirco Denicolò

Avrei voluto pubblicare ieri, giorno dell'inaugurazione della mostra, ma ogni tanto anche la tecnologia tradisce ! Non è sicuramente troppo tardi per saperne di più dell'originale trovata di Mirco Denicolò, sicuramente un modo diverso di confrontarsi con la ceramica.

Ceramiche senza peso.

Da una decina d’anni ho scelto di sviluppare la parte “pittorica” della ceramica e di privilegiare il lato letterario dell’arte per creare immagini come si raccontano storie. Ultimamente mi diverte lavorare in parallelo per le ceramiche che metto in mostra, le stampe cartacee che le comunicano e le slide-show che preparo per il giorno dell’inaugurazione. Quando mi hanno mostrato i meccanismi dell’animazione digitale c’è stato un cortocircuito tra tutte queste forme ed è nata la proposta che ho fatto al MIC: far interagire le ceramiche del museo con le mie, usare le immagini come attori di un teatro di marionette, non per una istallazione ma per una mostra virtuale, qualcosa di immateriale da fare vivere su Internet. Dall’archivio del museo ho tratto una serie di immagini digitali di opere antiche a partire dalle quali ho prodotto una trentina di “sketch” in ceramica. Una volta digitalizzato il mio materiale ho sviluppato lo story-board: è la storia di due personaggi, usciti da albarelli dipinti in stile severo, che scappano da un teatro all’altro, da un ripostiglio ad un palco, sopra e sotto terra, circondati da oggetti e attori più o meno incoerenti. L’animazione vera e propria ha richiesto un lavoro paziente durato una ventina di sessioni. La parte audio dell’opera ha la stessa importanza delle immagini, è un azione sonora che interagisce con il video per la quale i musicisti hanno avuto totale libertà espressiva.

Mi trovo in un bellissimo territorio di confine dove posso raccontare storie come non ho potuto fare fino ad ora… ho iniziato a cuocere gli sketch per il secondo video, ci saranno molti pesci e molti vasi.

NO'D: L'ispirazione mi viene dalla vite e dalle sue strade e risvolti inaspettati, spero di riuscire a riportare queste senzazioni nelle mie forme. Visivamente mi ispiro alle forme della natura, la geometria e i modelli che si trovano in esse.

CV: Se potessi scegliere dove vivere/lavorare nel mondo, dove andresti?
NO'D: Se dovessi muovermi da Cork in Irlanda dove vivo al momento, mi piacerebbe vivere in Italia

Nuala O'Donovan is one of many discoveries I made through FB. Her work is delicate and strong at the same time, the beauty of the form is inspired by the intricate patterns of nature. CV: Where do you get your inspiration from?
NO'D: My inspiration comes from life and its' unexpected paths and outcomes, I hope to reflect this in my forms. Visually I take my inspiration from natural forms, the geometry and patterns found in them.

CV: If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?
NO'D: If I had to move from Cork in Ireland where I live at the moment I would love to live in Italy.

Officine Saffi - Un nuovo spazio dedicato all'arte ceramica

Giovedì sono stata a Milano per l'inaugurazione del nuovo spazio dedicato unicamente alla ceramica. E' stata una fantastica esperienza, non solo per la bellezza dello spazio (situato nel cortile di un bel palazzo di una bellissima zona di Milano), l'affascinante diversità delle opere o la presentazione dell'ottima nuova veste della rivista La Ceramica; ma sopratutto per l'energia che questo evento ha generato.

Dalle "gite" mi era capitato di uscire demoralizzata, rassegnata ad una realtà ceramica sempre un po' in secondo piano, fortunatamente grazie a Silvia e Laura ho potuto ricredermi.
L'inaugurazione è stata un successo, c'era moltissima gente seriamente interessata alle opere (cosa abbastanza rara), molti ceramisti arrivati a Milano a festeggiare qualcosa di nuovo, altrettanti "non ceramisti" che rendevano l'evento trasversale togliendolo da quella triste realtà "me la canto e me la suono...", l'atmosfera era frizzante (merito anche dei Mojito traditori) in una Milano decisamente tiepida e accogliente.

Mi sento quindi di ringraziare molto Silvia Imperiale e tutti i collaboratori che ci hanno sempre creduto e Laura Borghi che con il suo intervento ha reso possibile la creazione di questa nuova entusiasmente realtà.
La grandezza di questo spazio polifunzionale è proprio quello di mettere a disposizione degli amanti della ceramica diversi modi di interagire. Noi ceramisti siamo spesso "dispersi", chiusi nel nostro piccolo mondo ma con un estremo bisogno di comunicare. Sono convinta che la nascita di una comunità che ha come punto di riferimento questo nuovo spazio, che si nutre con le mostre, i corsi, e il giornale abbia una grande possibilità, quella di aprire le porte del mondo della ceramica e farla conoscere ad un pubblico più vasto arricchendola di nuova linfa.

Non posso che celebrare questo evento, anche se un leggero cerchio alla testa, e la famosa scampata morte sotto il tram, hanno cercato di riportarmi alla realtà quella stessa sera...percui grazie anche ad Annalisa per averci salvato !

Detto questo volevo parlarvi delle fantastiche opere in mostra, ma credo che le immagini parlino da se :




Last week I quickly made my way to Milan for the opening of a new gallery: Officine Saffi. The space is situated in a beautiful area of the city, in the courtyard of a xx century building. But Officine Saffi is not just a gallery, is a space for courses and seminars and the home of the magazine 'La Ceramica'.

On the opening night the place was buzzing with people from inside and outside the ceramic world, celebrating the beauty of the works and the starting of a new day. Ceramics in Italy (and I am sure not just here) have always been enclosed in a smaller reality, a constellation of groups with little communication. This space offers the chance for something different, and others just like me, felt the good vibrations. I'll use this space to thank both Silvia Imperiale and the staff behind La Ceramica for believing in the project and Laura Borghi that with her intervention made all of this possible.

I also thank Annalisa for having saved mine and her life from sure death under a tramway due to too much excitement and ...mojitos.

Clay on Film

COLLECT 2011, 6-9 May: Public viewing

Ho scoperto molte novità grazie al sito della fiera internazionale dell'oggetto contemporaneo, meglio nota come Collect, che si terrà a Londra questo week end.

Se, come me, non sarete a Londra per sabato potete guardarvi la bella pubblicazione internet e dare una sbirciatina al catalogo degli espositori.
Durante la fiera saranno inoltre proiettati una serie di cortometraggi che riguardano il mondo dell'artiginato. Qui la lista completa. Purtroppo non sono visibili on-line ma spero presto che qualcuno si organizzi!!

Sempre a proposito di argilla su pellicola volevo parlarvi del Festival International du Film sur l'Argile et le Verre che si tiene ogni due anni Montpellier, per il 2012: Corum de Montpellier le date sono 30,31 Marzo e 1 Aprile.
Se avete qulache idea per un cortometraggio affrettatevi le domande si presentano entro il 176 settembre.

Thanks to the site of Collect, the international art fair for contemporary objects, I discovered many new and interesting things. If you, like me, are not going to be in London for this beautiful event check the fully on-line illustrated supplement on the fair and take a sneak peak at the catalogue. During the event onedotzero, the contemporary digital arts organisation presents craftwork a selection of 22 short films and animations. Unfortunately none are visible on-line but I am waiting patiently... About clay on Film, I want to remind you of the biannual International Festival of Films on Clay and Glass organised by Ateliers d’Art de France. Since its launch in 1998, the festival has supported and encouraged the creation and distribution of films about these materials, supporting their makers the world over. For On Screen, five critically acclaimed documentaries have been selected, representing both ancient tradition and contemporary making. The 8th International Festival of Films on Clay and Glass will be held on 30th March – 1st April 2012. If you want to take a chance...
