Père Kim a Lion

Kim en Joong has been a very pleasurable surprise. After a day in Lion trying to see soem ceramics, remember monday everything, and I mean Everything!, well except hairdressers and churches... And was in a church, not just any church, but Chathèdrale Saint Jean Lyon's cathedral, that I discovered Kim en Joong, artist of great talent and beautiful colours and Dominican friar. Born in South Korea, Kim mixes oriental tradition with influences of painters like Matisse, working on many diverse surfaces : wood, ceramic, paper, glass

Richard Slee at the V&A

Richard Slee: From Utility to Futility

Here we go again with the V&A... sorry it seems to be a new obsession I can't do without. On the floor of the ceramics gallery there is a new space for temporary exhibitions that was showing some works of Richard Slee. From Utility to Futility, this is the title of the solo show, is a collection of Diy tools transformed in coloured objects to look at. Saws, hammers and brooms seem to make fun of us from their shiny glasscases. Made to the point of perfection, Slee claims to be an obsessed perfectionist, these tools are decorative but useless. Irony is typical trait of Slee's work, he cleverly hides concepts under layers of colorful glazes, going from craft to fine art and back. Have a look at his site http://www.richardslee.com
From the V&A shop you can buy his trowels

Summer Exhibition at Galerie Besson

Basta pensarci, forse ci rincontreremo...adesso spazio agli artisti dell'estate:

Time for a new show at Galerie Besson. The beautiful works by Hassen Piggot are ready and packed in their cases. The idea of those beauties leaving the top floor of the gallery makes my heart sink. When I visited the exhibition, this early June I had fallen for a group of three bowls that had the colour of clouds after a storm. Unfortunately I didn't have the courage ( and that wasn't the only thing I lacked ) to add a new red spot to the many already present on the plinths...Maybe we'll meet again, but enough of this and let's make space to the Summer Exhibition, here are the artists, most of them regulars at this space on Royal Arcade.

Anthony Foo etc.

http://antjhfoo.blogspot.com/

www.anthonyfoo.com

Anthony Foo is a clever artist, his works make me think of the underwater world. His use of different clays and most importantly of paperclay is beautiful and harmonic. I've stumbled often upon Antony Foo's work, he has an interesting site and a helpful blog discussing news and technical bits. I've just received a mail saying that his work will be at this year's American Ceramic Society Annual Show at the McGroarty Arts Center in Tujunga, CA.
Speaking of mail...this has nothing to do with Foo, but I want to publicly congratulated CV friend Curtis Benzle for his recent success. Two of his pieces have been acquired from nonetheless than the Metropolitan Museum ! How exciting !

More from London

I spoke about Edmund De Waal before, I am a great admirer of his work, so subtle and intense, the perfection of the celandon with the harmony of the forms...a true delight.
While at the V&A, wondering round the fabulous contemporary ceramic collection, Elgin, Stair, Slee, Cassel, Stockman, Twomey...you name it; I raised my sight to admire this grandiose work of art. 425 pieces standing inside a red circle meters above my head. Sings and Wonders celebrate the 35 years old love of De Waal for the V&A, inspired by the incredible ceramic collection De Wall shows in every piece, in their usual soft palette, a different sensitivity creating a dialogue between the new and the old. A part from the frustration of not being able to get closer, Edmund you got me, the installation is really something else, so I suggest you watch this video of the artist talking about (and getting so close) to his art. If you want to know more there is also a book.

Back from London

Just back from London, which in my view is the greatest city for ceramics. Apparently I was a bit unlucky... my favourite ceramics shop, where I get the bits and pieces I don't find in Rome, has closed the London shop and now sells mainly over the internet... Trying to forget I rushed to the magnificent Somerset House for the Contemporary Ceramics gallery...CPA is on the move and has everything packed in boxes, so no change until September when opens the new space on Russell Street. :(
Luckily there are few certainties in life and the Victoria and Albert Museum is one of those. Their ceramic collection is massive and leaves you breathless, more that 3000 pieces from the earliest ceramics to the most contemporary artists. If the new galleries are excellent the entire collection is utterly beautiful and really you can't get enough of it and is FREE ! I forgot the beauty of the Jasperware, a special stoneware body created in 1700 to emulate the finest porcelain and left unglazed...wow So if you think you can live without have a look at their site, careful is extremely addictive !

Time for Eco Ceramic !

Sustain Ceramic is a beautiful project that raises questions on our dear materials. In our everyday life we are (hopefully) making changes in order to lessen our impact on the planet, so it's time to tackle our practice and make it greener !
Sustain Ceramic uses the by-products of local industries to create new and exciting objects. Brick dust, crushed window screen, broken ceramic plates are given new life by the wonderful hands of Sarah Jerath. The forms are inspired by nature, varying from sculptural pieces to more decorative objects and jewellery.

A Potter's Book by Bernard Leach

"… sincerity is what matters, and according to the degree in which the vital force of the potter and that of his culture behind him flow through the processes of making, the resulting pot will have life in it or not."

Bernard Leach was born in Hong Kong, he was educated in England and later returned to Japan as a teacher of etching techniques. In 1911, at a garden party in Tokyo, he saw guests decorating raku pots and fired them, this experience had a great impact on him. Leach studyied under the direction of Shigekichi Urano (Kenzan VI), there he met Tomimoto, another of Kenzan’s students, together they explored the fusion of English pottery traditions with Raku. When he returned to England in 1920 he established the famous Leach Pottery with another Japanese artist and potter, Shoji Hamada. Leach’s fame spread over the years, and now he is recognized as the major influence in modern pottery all over the world.
This is his most famous book, with plenty of technical information, but most importantly with his vision on ceramics.

Cluster with Mauve bowl, 2010, translucent porcelain
eight pieces, 28 x 30.2 x 29.5 cm. Photo Brian Hand

Gwyn Hassen Pigott is an amazing artists, her translucent porcelain composition reminds of the still life painting by Giorgio Morandi. The quality of her work is visible through the beauty of her soft coloured palette. RCA SHOW ONE

A Confusing Welcome, Matthew Raw, 30 x 50 x 30 cm, Terracotta

Ecco lo Show 2010:

The Royal College of Art in London has opened the door of the postgraduated final show, the RCA is a fantastic place where you can breath professionalism and innovation. The are five departments and the Ceramic and Glass one never failed to amazed me. The teaching is very fluid, making space for fruitful exchanges and uniqueness. Is definitely one of the best place. Reversed Volumes

This project, was presented in Milan last month, created by the Viennese duo Mischer’Traxler consists in a series of vegetable casted bowls. They look so good I want to eat them too...the only fault is that they are not fired, the designers used pigmented and hardened ceramic powder.

Pierfrancesco Solimene's 5

PS: Essere senza malizia
CV:Qual'e il tuo pezzo in ceramica preferito?

Pierfrancesco Solimene is a young ceramist that lives and works in Vietri sul Mare, a lovely village on the beautiful Amalfi coast known for its traditional ceramic production. I leave the words of Pierfrancesco, to describe his practice.

'Moulding the form, getting through the surface to a more intact and pure feeling, re-conquer reality by touching its origin, the deep end.
In their formal tension bottles have their bases well rooted on the ground, their bodies desire to rise, their mouths open to breath, they fill with air. Their solid aspect is opposed to a more intimate essence, a profound inside where is possible to look into a dark abyss. Everyday objects that give the thrill of eternity'

Ceramica Destrutturata

Jeff Koons 1988, Michael and Bubbles

Reconstustructed Ceramics
This is a different post, a complain post. I've notice the growing numbers of artists getting their hands on old porcelain figurines to create new pieces of art. Barnaby Bradford, Bouke De Vries, Barrã etc., are doing to the world of ceramics what Marcel Duchamp (a great genius) did for the world of art with the first ready made. But that was almost a century ago !! Now everyone is doing it and pretending to be provoking and shocking. Frankly I find most of this pieces just plain boring. I like experimentation, and I don't expect every ceramic artists to wedge the japanese way...but please we need some originality in the work, even more if the technical part is not interesting ! Most of these porcelain figurines are pretty shocking as they are...and as social critique is concern I'll rather have Jeff Koons
