Back to School

Elisabetta Bovina, Lidia Carlini, Silvia Carnevale Miino, Miii, Antonella Cimatti, Giovanna Compagnoni, Cristina D’Alberto, Monika Grycko, Ana Cecilia Hillar, Andri Ioannou, Elvira Keller, Carla Lega, Mirta Morigi, Miho Okai, Martha Pachon Rodriguez, Antonella Ravagli, Marta Servadei, Laura Silvagni, Susanna Vassura, Ivana e Saura Vignoli fino al 5 settembre al MIC

Museo Gianetti of Saronno has one of the largest collection of XVIII century porcelain. The building was Mr Gianetti house, and after his death became a site for his collection. Recently the Museum has started a new and interesting adventure Coffebreak, hosting in each of the seven rooms a young ceramist. The winner of the first round is ceramist Annalisa Guerri with the work Soldier #1.
I've asked Annalisa some more information about her piece.
'I've chosen to propose this piece for oriental porcelain room because of the assonance of the materials. The sculpture piece puts the traditional use of porcelain and of cobalt decoration decoration in a completely different light. The piece is made by wheel thrown and assembled cylinders that create a shape in unstable balance. On the surface I added some details: small slabs of porcelain glued on the body and printed in cobalt. The unbalanced form, the conjunction lines, the full and the empty spaces give a soul to the sculpture. The unsure body, the overwritten and fading words seem to form a figure that in its slow and constant walking through time, changes its shape, adapting it to the moment's necessity; its experiences accumulate forming matter stratification on the surface's body.'

Annalisa's work is fascinating and reminds me of nordic artists and their innovative use of porcelain. See more on her site:

Simon Zsolt Jozsef 's 5

Vi lascio a lui..

Simon Zsolt Jozsef has contacted me through Ceramic Vision, and I am very happy because otherwise I would not have had the chance to see his beautiful and poetic work. So do not be shy, this is a place for exchange and learning. I find his technique extremely interesting and his work has the wonderful quality of being different in a world that is somehow becoming homologous. I've ask him to answer the famous questions and to give us some information on his technique. I'll leave you to him...
The technique that I use is based on slip casting. More exactly continuation of the traditional slip casting method. I free this t
echnique strict rules and I use the original mistakes as forming process. Shapes are built up by „porcelain burrs”. My plaster moulds are cut in many pieces than shaped and carved one by one. After this long process I can fit them together freely. I can make several variations of shapes by enlarging or reducing the distance between the mould pieces. This distance determines the escaping slips quantity and form. So I shape the sculptures inside and outside at the same time in two different qualities: smooth and sharp.
CV: Five words that describe your work
SZJ: Lightsome, sharp, smooth, growing, surprising.

CV:
What aspect of your personality is more useful in your practice?
SZJ: Purposeful patience.

CV: What is your favourite ceramic piece of all times ?
SZJ: The carved (written) clay tablets of
Mesopotamia from the past gave me the first catharsis related to ceramics. From the „present” the beauty of this Fukami Sueharu’s sculpture touched me.

CV:
Where do you get your inspiration from?
SZJ: To see lifeless objects inspires me to lift them up, to change them and organize them. Like Morandi, who gave human qualities for simple objects. My plan was not give human qualities to objects but to step only a little further and show the motion behind the frozen shapes. I just would like to give a lifefull breath to objects. I’d like to be the observer of growing stones and “plantlike“ minerals, so I have to make some. What else could be the purpose of an artist than continuing the creation. My objects are in evolution. They are frozen, growing minerals a bit closer to the flowers. Perhaps not only materials but lifefull pieces as well.

CV:
If you could choose where to live/work in the world, where would you go?
SZJ: I have already lived in Indonesia for a year and based on this experience I see it is a gift to live in Central Europe, where East and West meets. The vision of spiritual East and the material West helps me to look for the spirit living in the material, the mission of the Middle. In Europe I feel at home. I could reach so far with my hands and work in other places, but I have to bring everything back to the loam. I am not cosmopolitan. I feel relationship with the land I was born. I look around in the world and I pick up something, which gives me the spices for my European, Hungarian life.

Père Kim a Lion

Richard Slee at the V&A

Richard Slee: From Utility to Futility

Here we go again with the V&A... sorry it seems to be a new obsession I can't do without. On the floor of the ceramics gallery there is a new space for temporary exhibitions that was showing some works of Richard Slee. From Utility to Futility, this is the title of the solo show, is a collection of Diy tools transformed in coloured objects to look at. Saws, hammers and brooms seem to make fun of us from their shiny glasscases. Made to the point of perfection, Slee claims to be an obsessed perfectionist, these tools are decorative but useless. Irony is typical trait of Slee's work, he cleverly hides concepts under layers of colorful glazes, going from craft to fine art and back. Have a look at his site http://www.richardslee.com

Summer Exhibition at Galerie Besson

Basta pensarci, forse ci rincontreremo...adesso spazio agli artisti dell'estate:

Deirdre Hawthorne

Time for a new show at Galerie Besson. The beautiful works by Hassen Piggot are ready and packed in their cases. The idea of those beauties leaving the top floor of the gallery makes my heart sink. When I visited the exhibition, this early June I had fallen for a group of three bowls that had the colour of clouds after a storm. Unfortunately I didn't have the courage ( and that wasn't the only thing I lacked ) to add a new red spot to the many already present on the plinths...Maybe we'll meet again, but enough of this and let's make space to the Summer Exhibition, here are the artists, most of them regulars at this space on Royal Arcade.

Anthony Foo etc.

http://antjhfoo.blogspot.com/

www.anthonyfoo.com

Anthony Foo is a clever artist, his works make me think of the underwater world. His use of different clays and most importantly of paperclay is beautiful and harmonic. I've stumbled often upon Antony Foo's work, he has an interesting site and a helpful blog discussing news and technical bits. I've just received a mail saying that his work will be at this year's American Ceramic Society Annual Show at the McGroarty Arts Center in Tujunga, CA.
Speaking of mail...this has nothing to do with Foo, but I want to publicly congratulated CV friend Curtis Benzle for his recent success. Two of his pieces have been acquired from nonetheless than the Metropolitan Museum ! How exciting !

More from London

I spoke about Edmund De Waal before, I am a great admirer of his work, so subtle and intense, the perfection of the celandon with the harmony of the forms...a true delight.
While at the V&A, wondering round the fabulous contemporary ceramic collection, Elgin, Stair, Slee, Cassel, Stockman, Twomey...you name it; I raised my sight to admire this grandiose work of art. 425 pieces standing inside a red circle meters above my head. Sings and Wonders celebrate the 35 years old love of De Waal for the V&A, inspired by the incredible ceramic collection De Wall shows in every piece, in their usual soft palette, a different sensitivity creating a dialogue between the new and the old. A part from the frustration of not being able to get closer, Edmund you got me, the installation is really something else, so I suggest you watch this video of the artist talking about (and getting so close) to his art. If you want to know more there is also a book.

Back from London

Just back from London, which in my view is the greatest city for ceramics. Apparently I was a bit unlucky... my favourite ceramics shop, where I get the bits and pieces I don't find in Rome, has closed the London shop and now sells mainly over the internet... Trying to forget I rushed to the magnificent Somerset House for the Contemporary Ceramics gallery...CPA is on the move and has everything packed in boxes, so no change until September when opens the new space on Russell Street. :(
Luckily there are few certainties in life and the Victoria and Albert Museum is one of those. Their ceramic collection is massive and leaves you breathless, more that 3000 pieces from the earliest ceramics to the most contemporary artists. If the new galleries are excellent the entire collection is utterly beautiful and really you can't get enough of it and is FREE ! I forgot the beauty of the Jasperware, a special stoneware body created in 1700 to emulate the finest porcelain and left unglazed...wow So if you think you can live without have a look at their site, careful is extremely addictive !

Time for Eco Ceramic !

Sustain Ceramic is a beautiful project that raises questions on our dear materials. In our everyday life we are (hopefully) making changes in order to lessen our impact on the planet, so it's time to tackle our practice and make it greener !
Sustain Ceramic uses the by-products of local industries to create new and exciting objects. Brick dust, crushed window screen, broken ceramic plates are given new life by the wonderful hands of Sarah Jerath. The forms are inspired by nature, varying from sculptural pieces to more decorative objects and jewellery.
Sustain Ceramic is available to buy at Pure Design

I love the Gallery at Bevere and I am tremendously envious of their reality. The gallery is very active, bringing tremendous artists out of the cities' circuit. The calendar is exciting hosting more than one show at the same time. The Gallery is supported by both the Art and the Craft Council.

A Potter's Book by Bernard Leach

"… sincerity is what matters, and according to the degree in which the vital force of the potter and that of his culture behind him flow through the processes of making, the resulting pot will have life in it or not."

Bernard Leach was born in Hong Kong, he was educated in England and later returned to Japan as a teacher of etching techniques. In 1911, at a garden party in Tokyo, he saw guests decorating raku pots and fired them, this experience had a great impact on him. Leach studyied under the direction of Shigekichi Urano (Kenzan VI), there he met Tomimoto, another of Kenzan’s students, together they explored the fusion of English pottery traditions with Raku. When he returned to England in 1920 he established the famous Leach Pottery with another Japanese artist and potter, Shoji Hamada. Leach’s fame spread over the years, and now he is recognized as the major influence in modern pottery all over the world.
This is his most famous book, with plenty of technical information, but most importantly with his vision on ceramics.
